Run FFmpeg in the foreground as a systemd service, then use a restart policy such as Restart=on-failure to bring it back after a process failure. That can keep an encoder process running on a Hetzner Linux server, but it cannot guarantee YouTube is receiving healthy video: verify the stream separately in YouTube Live Control Room.
What systemd can—and cannot—recover
With Type=simple, systemd supervises the service’s main process. Keep FFmpeg in the foreground so systemd can observe when it exits; do not daemonize it behind the service manager. For a long-running service, systemd documents Restart=on-failure as a suitable recovery policy. A delay such as RestartSec=5 prevents an immediate retry, but restarts are still subject to systemd’s start-rate limits. systemd service documentation
A restart policy responds to process failures and certain timeouts. It does not necessarily detect an FFmpeg process that remains alive while input, encoding, or delivery has stalled. Treat service state and YouTube’s incoming-stream health as separate checks.
Prepare the server and YouTube stream
Use a dedicated account and readable working files
Create a dedicated, unprivileged Linux account for the service and make sure it can read the video or other input and any configuration it needs. Use absolute paths for FFmpeg, input files, and the working directory. This guide does not establish a particular Hetzner server size or firewall configuration; choose and verify those for your workload and server setup separately.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Get the correct YouTube ingest details
In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the ingestion address and stream key for the stream you intend to send. YouTube’s LiveStreams resource distinguishes primary and backup ingestion addresses and includes RTMP and RTMPS ingest types. Use the actual address and key supplied for your stream; a backup address does not mean a single-output FFmpeg service is sending to both endpoints. YouTube LiveStreams API
Where your encoder and endpoint support it, prefer RTMPS. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS: the connection must use port 443, and TLS SNI must identify the ingestion server hostname. Confirm that the endpoint you use is the RTMPS one provided by YouTube. YouTube RTMPS guide
Protect the stream key
A stream key grants access to the live ingest, so do not put a real key in a publicly readable unit file, article example, screenshot, or command likely to be saved in shell history. systemd warns that environment variables are not appropriate for secrets: they may be exposed through D-Bus and passed to child processes. Use a credential mechanism supported by the systemd version installed on your server, or another appropriately protected secret-delivery method, and restrict file permissions. systemd execution documentation

Create a foreground FFmpeg service
The following is a unit-file outline, not a complete FFmpeg command. Replace every angle-bracket placeholder with your own verified paths and settings; the placeholders are not FFmpeg options. Confirm the FFmpeg binary path on the host and how your chosen secret-delivery method makes the stream key available. No specific encoding flags or key-insertion syntax are validated here.

ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg <input-and-encoding-options> <youtube-ingest-url>
Restart=on-failure

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Save the unit as /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service if that path suits your system. Replace User, WorkingDirectory, the FFmpeg binary path, and ExecStart details to match the server. Keep FFmpeg as the foreground process: do not append a shell background operator or use a mode that detaches it.
Load, enable, and start the unit
- After saving or changing the unit, reload systemd’s unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable startup at boot and start the service now:
sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.service. - Check the unit’s current state:
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service. - Read recent service output, including FFmpeg stderr captured by the service manager:
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager. - Check YouTube Live Control Room for received video, audio, and stream-health status. Do not treat an active systemd unit alone as proof of a working broadcast.
Check both process state and YouTube health
YouTube’s health messages can flag configuration issues involving bitrate, codec, frame rate, GOP length, or insufficient incoming video. Use the specific message shown in Live Control Room to guide diagnosis rather than changing settings at random. The LiveStreams resource also describes stream states such as active, inactive, error, and ready, alongside health information. YouTube health status reference · YouTube LiveStreams API

If YouTube reports unhealthy or missing video while systemd says the service is active, investigate the input, FFmpeg’s output configuration, and ingest connection. Restarting the process only helps if a failure makes the process exit or otherwise triggers systemd’s configured recovery behavior.
Troubleshoot common failures
The service exits shortly after starting
- Inspect
journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.servicefor FFmpeg stderr and the service’s exit information. - Check that the executable and input paths are correct and that the service account can read the input and required configuration.
- Verify the ingest address and key without exposing the key in logs, screenshots, or public files.
The service is active but YouTube receives nothing
Check YouTube’s stream-health and ingest status, then inspect whether FFmpeg is actually reading its input and producing the intended output. A process that has not exited may not be delivering a valid video stream.
RTMPS reports a TLS or connection error
Confirm you are using the RTMPS endpoint and scheme supplied by YouTube, that the connection reaches port 443, and that TLS SNI identifies the ingestion hostname. YouTube’s RTMPS guide states: “The connection must be made to port 443 on the ingestion server.” YouTube RTMPS guide

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Restarts stop after repeated failures
systemd limits repeated starts; a restart policy is not an unlimited retry loop. Check the service and manager logs for start-rate-limit messages, fix the underlying failure, and only then reset the failed unit if necessary with sudo systemctl reset-failed ffmpeg-youtube.service before starting it again.
YouTube displays a stream-health warning
Use the warning category to identify whether YouTube is reporting a bitrate, codec, frame-rate, GOP, or insufficient-video issue. A restart does not correct an unsuitable input or encoding configuration. YouTube health status reference

Frequently Asked Questions
Does systemd restart FFmpeg if YouTube stops receiving video but FFmpeg stays alive?
Not necessarily. The configured restart policy acts on process failures and certain timeouts; monitor YouTube’s stream health separately.
Should I send to YouTube’s primary and backup ingest addresses from one unit?
A backup ingest address is available, but the single-output service shown here does not imply simultaneous primary and backup delivery.
