To show the current track inside your YouTube live picture, your playout setup must expose the track’s metadata and an overlay must display it. With local files played through VLC, an OBS community add-on can read title and artist tags and export the current track to a text file. Other players, including YouTube Music in a browser, need a compatible integration of their own; the VLC method does not automatically read every audio source.
What creates a now-playing label
The label is part of the video you send to YouTube. Your audio player or playout system supplies track information—typically title and artist—and OBS or a hosted overlay renders that information over the stream. The label updates only if the integration can detect a track change and pass the new metadata to the overlay.
YouTube’s own Music section is separate. YouTube says, “This section shows info about the music heard in the video, like song and artist names.” It may add information to some videos, but it is not documented as a creator-controlled, per-track visual overlay for a live picture, and not every track will be identified. Set up a VLC-based now-playing label in OBS
1. Confirm that VLC is actually supplying the stream audio
The cited Now Playing Monitor works with a VLC video source; it should not be assumed to read audio from a browser, YouTube Music, or every other player. If your relaxation playlist is in another application, look for an integration that explicitly supports that source instead.

2. Check track metadata
Review the files’ title and artist tags before building the overlay. The script lists MP3, FLAC, OGG, M4A, WAV, OPUS, and AAC support. It can fall back to the filename when metadata is missing, which may produce a less useful label. The script’s resource page lists Linux, OBS 27.0 or higher with Python scripting enabled, and Mutagen as optional but recommended. Check its current instructions and compatibility before depending on it for an unattended broadcast.
3. Install and configure a compatible integration
Follow the current instructions on the chosen OBS resource page. For Now Playing Monitor, confirm that your operating system and OBS setup meet its listed requirements and configure it to detect the VLC source. Tuna is another community-documented VLC route; verify its current installation and source-selection instructions before use. Neither resource establishes a universal setup for all OBS installations.

4. Connect its output to the scene
If the integration exports the current song to a text file, add that file as an OBS text source using the text-source option that reads from a file, then point it at the generated output. If the integration provides a different source or browser overlay, follow its instructions for adding that output to the scene. The label needs to be visible in the scene that is actually sent to YouTube.
Place the text against a relatively uncluttered area of the relaxation visual, use sufficient contrast and a readable size, and avoid covering focal imagery. These are layout choices rather than a layout prescribed by the cited tools.

5. Test changes and missing information
Before leaving the broadcast unattended, play more than one track and confirm that the displayed title changes. Test a file with missing tags too, so you know whether the fallback filename is acceptable and whether an empty or stale label can appear. Check the output after restarting OBS or the player if your workflow requires recovery from either restarting.
6. Clear music rights separately
A correct title-and-artist label does not grant permission to stream the music. YouTube for Artists recommends coordinating with a label or distributor when using copyright-protected music in a live stream to avoid problems such as copyright strikes. YouTube for Artists

Why browser playback needs a different solution
If the track plays from YouTube Music or another browser player, the VLC-specific script is not established as compatible. The browser may expose track information differently from a VLC source, so choose an overlay or playout integration that explicitly supports your player and test it with your actual setup. YouTube’s Music section may identify some music on the watch page, but it should not be relied on as the changing label inside your live picture.

Troubleshoot a label that does not update
- No label appears: Check that the text or browser source is in the active OBS scene and that it points to the integration’s actual output. Confirm the integration detects the VLC source.
- The label shows a filename or incomplete details: Inspect the file’s title and artist tags. The cited script can use the filename when metadata is unavailable; it cannot display tags that are absent.
- The track never changes on screen: Confirm that the integration detects track changes and that the scene’s source reads its current output. Test with another track before relying on it unattended.
- The audio comes from a browser or another player: The VLC-specific workflow may not apply. Use an option that explicitly supports that playback source.
