YouTube Stream Health Warning After Changing Resolution: What to Check

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After changing your encoder resolution, first confirm the resolution and frame rate the encoder is actually sending. Then check whether a manually configured YouTube stream key expects that same resolution, and update the bitrate for the new resolution, frame rate and codec. If those settings match, check encoder health and upload stability. The warning’s exact wording matters; without it and the encoder’s telemetry, no single cause can be assumed.

1. Confirm the encoder’s actual output

Check the encoder’s output resolution and frame rate—not only the canvas or base resolution—and verify they are the values you intended after the change. A mismatch between the project canvas and the encoded output can leave YouTube receiving a different signal than you expect.

YouTube Live Control Room detects incoming encoder settings automatically by default. Manual resolution selection is available when using a custom stream key; if you enabled it, confirm that the selected resolution agrees with the encoder’s actual output. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and its stream-key guidance.

2. Match bitrate to the new signal

A bitrate that suited your previous resolution may not suit the new one. YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations depend on resolution, frame rate and codec. In its H.264 table, the recommendations include:

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Live output Recommended bitrate
1080p at 60 fps, H.264 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps, H.264 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps, H.264 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps, H.264 8 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps, AV1 or H.265 12 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 10 Mbps

These are YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations, not guarantees of what your encoder or connection can sustain. Check the applicable row in YouTube’s current live encoder settings table for your codec and target output; the table and interface may change.

3. Check the general encoder settings

For RTMP or RTMPS streaming, YouTube’s guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1; supports frame rates up to 60 fps; recommends constant bitrate (CBR); and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Review the encoder’s output settings rather than assuming that changing resolution left the rest of the profile appropriate. See YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS settings guidance.

4. Determine whether the problem is in encoding or connectivity

If the encoder preview or local recording looks poor

Look for encoder errors, high CPU load, or low-quality source footage. If the problem is already visible in the encoder preview or recording, troubleshoot that path before treating it as a YouTube connection issue.

If the encoder output looks healthy but YouTube reports trouble

Check outbound upload strength and stability. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends testing the connection and contacting your internet service provider if the test indicates a connection problem. A stable wired connection may help when testing points to network instability; it will not correct a mismatched resolution, unsuitable bitrate or overloaded encoder. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

5. Check upload bandwidth and headroom

YouTube says the total streaming bitrate must not exceed the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Treat that as YouTube’s general recommendation, not a measured minimum that guarantees a stable stream on every connection. Include the stream’s total bitrate when assessing capacity, and account for fluctuations rather than relying only on a best-case speed test. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

6. Run a preflight test and watch stream health

  1. Set the encoder to the resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate you intend to use.
  2. Test with representative motion and audio, not just a static screen. YouTube advises testing audio and movement similar to what the live stream will contain.
  3. Check the Live Control Room preview and confirm the received output is as expected.
  4. Monitor stream-health messages during the test and the live event. Use the warning’s exact text as a clue for which branch to investigate first.

See YouTube’s testing guidance and its stream-health monitoring information. HLS has additional setup requirements and higher latency than RTMP; it is not a routine first fix for a resolution warning. YouTube’s HLS guidance is relevant if you are deliberately configuring that protocol.

Troubleshooting by symptom

What you see What to check next
The received resolution does not match your intended output Verify the encoder’s actual output and, if using a custom stream key with manual resolution enabled, its selected resolution.
The warning began after raising or lowering resolution Check the bitrate for the new resolution, frame rate and codec instead of carrying over the old value.
The encoder preview or local recording is already poor Inspect encoder errors, CPU load and source quality.
The encoder output looks healthy, but stream health is poor Test outbound upload stability and available bandwidth; check that the total stream bitrate leaves YouTube’s recommended headroom.
The issue is intermittent or appears under representative motion Repeat a preflight test with the intended audio and movement, then monitor the Live Control Room messages.
