Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Keep the YouTube Live event and encoder connection running, and change the video in the production software feeding the encoder. In OBS, a VLC Video source can play a playlist; advancing it or switching to another prepared source does not require ending the YouTube event. The playlist is in OBS—not a native YouTube Studio in-stream playlist editor. Test transitions at your actual 4K/60 settings, because playlist support does not guarantee a seamless picture or audio handoff.
How to change videos without ending the YouTube Live event
For an encoder-based broadcast, the encoder sends one live feed to the event. Put the prerecorded videos in the production layer—here, an OBS VLC Video source—and change what that source plays while leaving the encoder output connected. Use YouTube’s End Stream control only when the broadcast is actually finished.
- Prepare the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, create or select the encoder-based live event. Copy its server URL and stream key into your streaming software and confirm the event settings. YouTube’s encoder workflow describes connecting, previewing and starting the event.
- Install VLC if needed. OBS lists its VLC Video playlist source only when VLC is installed. Check the OBS Sources Guide if the source is missing.
- Add the playlist in OBS. In the scene used for the prerecorded broadcast, add a VLC Video source and select the media files in the intended order. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes multiple files as a playlist and documents loop and shuffle settings.
- Choose playback behavior. Use playlist order for a planned sequence or shuffle for randomized playback; enable looping if the playlist should repeat. Decide how the source should behave when hidden, and verify that behavior in your installed OBS/VLC versions. The controls and labels can vary by version.
- Change the content while the encoder stays live. Advance the playlist or switch to another prepared scene or source, keeping the same encoder feed connected to the YouTube event. Exact controls depend on your setup; there is no universal button sequence documented for every OBS/VLC version.
- Finish only when the broadcast should end. When the event is over, use YouTube’s End Stream control and stop sending encoder content, as described in YouTube’s encoder instructions.
This workflow changes the media being sent, not the YouTube event itself. It does not promise a zero-black-frame transition, uninterrupted audio, or no dropped frames: those outcomes depend on the media, source and system, so check them in a test.
Set and verify 4K/60 before switching videos
Playlist controls do not make a stream 4K/60. The output resolution, frame rate, encoder configuration and connection must all support the target. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists 4K/2160p at 60 fps and gives different bitrate guidance by codec:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Codec | YouTube’s 4K/2160p at 60 fps guidance |
|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum |
| H.264 | 35 Mbps recommended |
These are codec-specific values from YouTube’s retrieved guidance, not one universal bitrate for every encoder. Check the current table and the settings supported by your encoder before going live. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into different formats for viewers, so your configured input is not a guarantee that every viewer receives 4K.
YouTube says low latency is unavailable for 4K/2160 streams; 4K streams are optimized for quality at normal latency. Account for that if you are expecting near-real-time interaction.

Test the playlist transition before broadcasting
Use an unlisted or otherwise controlled event at the intended resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommends testing, checking the Live Control Room preview and monitoring stream health. Its live streaming tips recommend setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start.
- Confirm the YouTube preview shows the expected picture and audio before starting the public event.
- Switch between the exact videos or scenes you plan to use; watch and listen for a black frame, audio gap, desynchronization or stutter.
- Check the stream-health indicators during and after each change, then review viewer-side playback.
- Test loop, shuffle and hidden-source behavior rather than assuming they will act identically across OBS/VLC versions.
Troubleshoot common playlist-switch problems
| Symptom | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is not available as a source | OBS’s VLC playlist source depends on VLC being installed. | Install VLC, then check the OBS Sources Guide and verify the source is available in your installed version. |
| The playlist does not advance or repeat as expected | Review playlist order, shuffle and loop settings; check whether the source is hidden and how it is configured to behave. | Adjust the source settings and test the same sequence again. OBS’s Media Sources page documents these options, but behavior can depend on the installed versions. |
| The viewer sees a black frame, audio gap or stutter during a change | The playlist feature itself does not guarantee seamless transitions. Check the media and the actual scene/source handoff. | Reproduce the transition in a controlled test, try a prepared scene/source change, and monitor stream health before using it in the event. |
| The stream is not delivering the intended 4K/60 output | Check output resolution and frame rate, codec-specific bitrate settings, connection and YouTube stream health. | Compare your encoder settings with YouTube’s current encoder guidance and test again at the intended output settings. |
| The YouTube event ends when changing content | Check whether the event’s End Stream control was used or the encoder connection stopped. | Keep the same event and encoder output active while changing the OBS source; reserve End Stream for the actual end of the broadcast. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel built from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a different option from this OBS workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only, and plays uploaded video rather than going live from a camera.
