How to Confirm YouTube Is Receiving the Intended Resolution from FFmpeg

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an upload, inspect the finished file with ffprobe, then check YouTube playback after processing finishes. For a live stream, verify FFmpeg’s output and YouTube Live Control Room’s detected ingest settings separately; the resolution viewers can select is a downstream result, not proof of the incoming signal.

Check the resolution FFmpeg actually encoded

For a file upload, start with the output file on your computer. The video stream’s width and height show the encoded raster; bitrate alone does not establish resolution.

Set the intended output dimensions

When resizing, FFmpeg’s scale filter sets the output width and height. For a 16:9 1080p output, a basic example is:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "scale=1920:1080" output.mp4

Use the target dimensions appropriate to your project. If the source has a different aspect ratio, forcing both dimensions can stretch or distort the image. Decide whether to preserve the full frame with bars, crop part of the image, or deliberately stretch it. FFmpeg documents scale options for preserving the original aspect ratio; consult the FFmpeg documentation for command options.

Read the encoded file with ffprobe

Run this against the file you intend to upload:

ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0
  -show_entries stream=codec_name,width,height,display_aspect_ratio,avg_frame_rate
  -of json output.mp4

Check width and height against your target, and review display_aspect_ratio when the source is not standard 16:9. This examines the first video stream in the local file; it does not show whether YouTube has finished processing the upload. See the ffprobe documentation for stream selection and output fields.

For standard 16:9 video, YouTube identifies 1920×1080 as 1080p, 2560×1440 as 1440p, and 3840×2160 as 4K. Other aspect ratios may use different raster dimensions, so compare against the intended shape rather than expecting every video to be 16:9. See YouTube’s resolution and aspect-ratio guidance.

Why is my 1080p or 4K option missing after upload?

A missing high-resolution playback option shortly after upload does not by itself mean FFmpeg encoded the wrong dimensions. YouTube processes lower-quality versions first; higher qualities such as 1080p and 4K can take longer and may be missing for several hours. Processing time depends on factors including video quality, length, format, and traffic. YouTube also notes that available playback quality can depend on the device and network.

  1. Confirm the local file’s dimensions with ffprobe.
  2. Allow YouTube’s processing to complete, then check the player’s quality menu again later.
  3. Test in a browser or on a device that supports the target playback quality.

YouTube converts uploads to the highest resolution it can make available for playback across devices and networks. The source file’s dimensions and the playback renditions currently offered by YouTube are separate facts. For platform troubleshooting, see YouTube’s upload audio and video troubleshooting guidance.

Recommended upload bitrates are not a resolution check

YouTube’s current recommended SDR upload bitrates, accessed in 2026, vary by resolution and frame-rate class. They are recommendations, not guaranteed quality thresholds, and meeting them does not prove the encoded dimensions or resulting playback resolution.

Resolution Standard frame rates High frame rates
720p 5 Mbps 7.5 Mbps
1080p 8 Mbps 12 Mbps
2160p (4K) 35–45 Mbps 53–68 Mbps

YouTube’s guidance classifies standard frame rates as 24, 25, or 30 fps and high frame rates as 48, 50, or 60 fps. It also states that audio playback bitrate is not related to video resolution. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

Verify a live FFmpeg stream at ingest and playback

A live stream has a different verification path from an uploaded file. YouTube says it automatically detects encoder settings by default. In Live Control Room, review the detected ingest settings, stream health, and any messages; compare the detected resolution with the resolution FFmpeg is configured to send.

Then check viewer playback separately. YouTube transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks, so the playback options do not necessarily match the incoming resolution one-to-one. Live Control Room’s detected ingest setting is the relevant platform-side check for what YouTube is receiving. Follow YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for recommended bitrate ranges by ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate.

Troubleshooting: match the symptom to the stage

  • ffprobe reports smaller dimensions than intended: The local file was encoded at those dimensions. Check the FFmpeg command and scale-filter target, then inspect the newly encoded output rather than relying on the project’s intended settings.
  • The image looks stretched: The output width and height may have forced a different aspect ratio. Choose whether to preserve the source shape with bars, crop to fill, or accept stretching; use FFmpeg’s documented aspect-ratio options where appropriate.
  • ffprobe shows the target, but YouTube offers only lower quality: The source raster is correct, but YouTube may still be processing higher-quality versions. Wait and check later, using a device or browser that supports the target quality.
  • Live Control Room detects a lower resolution than expected: Compare its detected ingest resolution with FFmpeg’s configured output. Check the encoder configuration and stream health before treating viewer playback as the source of the mismatch.
  • Live ingest matches, but a viewer cannot select the target quality: Ingest and viewer renditions are different stages. YouTube creates multiple output formats, and the viewer’s device or network can affect playback availability.
  • The bitrate looks right, but quality is wrong: Bitrate recommendations do not verify dimensions. Check width and height directly for an upload, or detected ingest resolution in Live Control Room for a live stream.
