How to Stream Multiple Video Formats in One YouTube Live Loop

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To play several local video files in sequence and repeat them on YouTube Live, add them to an OBS Studio VLC Video source, enable Loop Playlist, and send OBS’s output to your YouTube stream URL and key. “Formats” can mean different file types or different viewer resolutions: OBS/VLC plays your local files, while YouTube receives one encoder feed and transcodes it into viewer formats.

What “multiple video formats” means here

A playlist can contain multiple local clips, potentially in different file types, and play them one after another. That is separate from the quality options viewers receive. YouTube automatically transcodes the incoming live stream into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. OBS does not send a separate live feed for each source file or viewer resolution.

  • Local playback: OBS and VLC read and play the files in your scene.
  • Live ingestion: OBS encodes one stream and sends it to YouTube using a stream URL and key.
  • Viewer delivery: YouTube creates the available playback formats from that incoming stream.

Set up a repeating playlist in OBS

1. Check that your channel can go live

YouTube’s live-streaming requirements include a verified channel without live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, plus a minimum-age requirement. Create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and check the current eligibility details there: YouTube live-streaming requirements.

2. Install VLC and add the right OBS source

Install VLC on the computer running OBS; OBS’s VLC Video source depends on it. In your scene, add a VLC Video source. This source supports a playlist. By contrast, OBS’s built-in Media Source is suited to playing and looping one file.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

OBS documents common extensions for Media Source including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. VLC Video provides extended media support, but neither extension lists nor the source documentation guarantee that every codec in every file will work. Test your actual files on the computer you plan to use. See OBS media sources.

3. Add files in the order you want

Open the VLC Video source properties and add the local files to its playlist in sequence. Leave shuffle off if you want the same order each time. Turn on Loop Playlist to start again after the final item. Shuffle is a separate option and changes the order of playback.

If you only need to repeat one clip, use a Media Source and its loop option instead. Use VLC Video when you need multiple playlist items or need to test VLC’s broader media support.

4. Fit the video and check audio in the scene

Size and position the source on the OBS canvas so it fits the intended output. Check the audio mixer while a file plays and set a suitable level. Source framing and audio levels are OBS scene decisions; they are not controlled by YouTube’s bitrate recommendations.

Do not assume that separate files will transition seamlessly. Check the handoff between each pair of clips and the end-to-start loop. If you see a blank frame, hear an abrupt cut, or lose audio, adjust the files or scene setup and test again before broadcasting.

5. Connect OBS to the YouTube broadcast

In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and retrieve its stream URL and key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select the YouTube service or configure the server and key as appropriate, then enter the credentials. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guidance for the current interface: Set up your encoder for live streaming.

Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it or show it on screen. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure encoder ingestion. If you think the key has been exposed, replace or reset it in the Live Control Room and update OBS before going live.

6. Set encoder output to match your target

Choose resolution and frame rate based on the material and the upload connection, then use YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for that specific resolution, frame rate, and ingestion codec. There is no single correct bitrate independent of those choices. YouTube’s guidance specifies CBR, recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video ingestion, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio.

These are settings for the stream OBS sends to YouTube, not instructions to encode each playlist file into separate viewer formats. Check the current recommendations and matching bitrate row at YouTube’s encoder settings. Test whether your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate rather than relying only on a nominal speed-test result.

7. Test privately or unlisted before the real broadcast

  1. Start a private or unlisted test stream when appropriate.
  2. Check the Live Control Room preview for framing, motion, and audio.
  3. Watch the stream-health status and any messages in YouTube Studio.
  4. Let the playlist play through at least one transition and its loop point.
  5. Confirm that the computer stays awake, the network remains available, and local files are accessible.

YouTube advises monitoring stream health and messages; this does not guarantee that a stream will run indefinitely. Keep OBS open and monitor it during a long broadcast. See YouTube live-streaming tips.

Common problems and fixes

  • VLC Video is missing or does not play: Confirm VLC is installed on the OBS computer, restart OBS after installation, and test a known-good file. Compatibility can depend on the file’s codec, not just its extension.
  • The playlist stops at the last file: Open the source properties and enable Loop Playlist. Check that the list contains the intended files and that shuffle is off if order matters.
  • A clip is cropped, stretched, or too small: Resize and position the source in the scene to fit the OBS canvas. Recheck the preview at the output resolution you selected.
  • Audio is missing or inconsistent: Check that the clip has an audio track, inspect OBS’s audio mixer while it plays, and review the handoff between files. Confirm the stream preview audio before going public.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health or dropped frames: Check the Live Control Room messages, network stability, and whether upload capacity can sustain the selected bitrate. Revisit YouTube’s bitrate guidance for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
  • YouTube does not receive the broadcast: Verify the selected service/server, stream URL, and key. If you changed or reset the key, update the value in OBS.
  • The broadcast ends when the computer sleeps or loses connection: Keep the computer awake and the network connected for the DIY setup. For a cloud-run option, see below.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks

Having a file locally or being able to play it in OBS does not establish that you have permission to broadcast it. Before streaming, confirm that you own or have the necessary rights to every video, soundtrack, and other included material. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-streaming rules, and do not treat a playlist or repeat loop as a way around them. Reused-content and monetization decisions are separate from whether a file can technically play in a live stream; check the applicable YouTube policies for your channel and content.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a pre-recorded YouTube channel stream to continue without keeping a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded video rather than broadcasting a camera.
