First check whether the viewer’s player paused or the broadcast itself went offline. A “Video paused. Continue watching?” prompt is YouTube’s inactivity check, not proof that the lofi stream ended. If everyone loses the broadcast, inspect YouTube Studio’s stream-health messages and check for copyright interruptions.
Identify what stopped before changing settings
Check the screen and ask another viewer, if possible, whether the stream is still live. The correct fix depends on whether the pause affects one viewer’s playback or the creator’s broadcast.
| What you see | What it usually indicates | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “Video paused. Continue watching?” | YouTube’s viewer inactivity check; the broadcast may still be live. | Select “Yes” to resume playback. YouTube documents the prompt and its timing. |
| Autoplay stops, but there is no prompt | YouTube has stopped autoplay after inactivity; device and connection type matter. | Check the applicable limits and autoplay setting below. YouTube’s Autoplay guidance. |
| Spinning indicator, repeated buffering, or reduced quality | Playback or network trouble, not necessarily a stopped broadcast. | Try a stable connection and, if available, a less aggressive low-latency choice. See YouTube’s streaming and video troubleshooting guidance. |
| The broadcast is offline for all viewers | A creator-side stream failure, interruption, or termination. | Check timestamped errors in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and review copyright status. |
If YouTube says “Video paused. Continue watching?”
When Autoplay is enabled, YouTube says it shows this prompt after 30 minutes of uninterrupted viewing on mobile, 60 minutes on the web, or 180 minutes on TV. These are the timings in YouTube Help guidance accessed in 2026; the page does not show a publication date. Select “Yes” when the prompt appears to continue watching.
YouTube explains that it asks whether you are still watching “to protect your watch history and help make sure you don’t use internet data if you’re not actually watching YouTube.” This is a viewer-side playback pause; it does not by itself establish that the creator’s broadcast went offline. See YouTube’s explanation of the prompt.

If Autoplay stops without a prompt
YouTube says Autoplay stops automatically after 30 minutes of inactivity on mobile data or after four hours on Wi-Fi. Those limits concern viewer playback and depend on connection type; they are not a general limit on how long a creator can broadcast live. Check YouTube’s current Autoplay guidance for the setting and behavior relevant to your device.
If the video buffers or its quality drops
Buffering, a spinning indicator, or sudden quality reduction points to a playback or connection issue rather than the “Continue watching?” inactivity check. Network congestion and other factors can affect live programming. YouTube notes that lower broadcast delay leaves less buffer and can make playback interruptions more likely.

- Try a stable internet connection rather than a congested or unreliable one.
- If the player offers latency choices, try a less aggressive low-latency setting; this may provide more buffer at the cost of a longer delay.
- Compare playback on another device or connection to see whether the issue is limited to one viewer.
These steps help distinguish an individual playback problem from a stream failure; they do not identify a specific cause without more evidence. Refer to YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance.
If the broadcast is offline for everyone
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and inspect the timestamped stream-health messages around the time the broadcast stopped. Use the specific message to guide the investigation instead of assuming that one encoder setting or a hardware replacement is the answer.

YouTube’s diagnostic documentation identifies issues including insufficient video output, which can cause buffering; unsupported encoding; and keyframes sent too infrequently. Match the correction to the health message shown for your stream. See Google’s live-stream health-status documentation.
If a lofi broadcast disappears, check copyright status
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It says detected content may interrupt or terminate a stream. A music stream can therefore go offline because of copyright matching even when the creator expected the music to be usable. YouTube also says that licensed third-party content may still be interrupted if the channel is not on the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist.

Check YouTube Studio for copyright or Community Guidelines strikes and review whether the relevant rights holder has allowlisted the channel when that is required. Do not treat a music license alone as proof that a live broadcast will pass YouTube’s Content ID checks. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does YouTube stop lofi streams after 12 hours?
YouTube’s 12-hour guidance concerns DVR and archiving, not a demonstrated universal limit that ends live broadcasts after a few hours. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, and its setup instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Those are recording and rewind constraints, not evidence of a general few-hour cutoff. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
