Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUsually, this difference does not mean FFmpeg bypassed or triggered a special copyright rule. YouTube scans uploaded videos and live streams through distinct workflows, and the audio YouTube receives from an FFmpeg stream may differ from the track in the source file. First identify whether YouTube interrupted the live broadcast or claimed its archive; then check whether FFmpeg copied the audio unchanged or decoded and processed it.
First identify what YouTube flagged
“Detected in the stream” can mean two different things: YouTube warned about or interrupted a live broadcast, or it placed a Content ID claim on an archived stream after the broadcast ended. Those events are not interchangeable with an upload scan of the original file.
| Workflow | What YouTube says happens | First thing to check |
|---|---|---|
| Source-file upload | Uploaded videos are automatically scanned against reference files supplied by copyright owners. A match can lead to a claim, with the rights holder’s policy determining whether the video is blocked, monetized, or tracked; policies may vary by geography. YouTube: How Content ID works; YouTube: Using Content ID. | Which file and audio track did you upload, and what exactly did YouTube report? |
| Live stream | YouTube says all live streams are scanned for third-party content. It can warn you, replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it temporarily, or terminate it if the content continues. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams. | Was there a live warning, placeholder, interruption, or termination? |
| Archived live stream | If the stream is archived, YouTube says Content ID claims are made after the live stream is complete. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams. | Is the notice a claim on the finished archive rather than an interruption during the broadcast? |
YouTube describes upload scanning and live-stream scanning, but the available guidance does not establish that every upload and stream is checked at the same time or under identical conditions. A source file that did not receive a visible notice is not proof that the live workflow was equivalent.
Check whether FFmpeg changed the audio
FFmpeg can pass encoded audio packets through unchanged or decode and process audio before encoding it again. Its documentation calls the first approach streamcopy: packets are passed through without decoding, filtering, or encoding. A transcode can apply filters before encoding, including resampling or mixing. FFmpeg documentation.

Compare the exact input file and command used for the source-file test with the command and output sent to YouTube. These are diagnostic checks, not proof that a particular difference caused the match:
- Audio stream selection: Check the input’s audio streams and every
-mapoption. A command may select a different track from the one you expected. - Copy or transcode: Look for
-c:a copyversus an audio encoder. Copying packets does not itself decode, filter, or re-encode them; transcoding does. - Filters and channel handling: Check for volume changes, mixing, resampling, and channel conversion, including filters that may be set elsewhere in a script.
- Output characteristics: Compare audio codec, sample rate, channel layout, duration, and audio/video timestamps between the source and FFmpeg output.
- Test conditions: Confirm that the source-file and stream tests used the same song segment, account, destination, visibility, and live-versus-upload workflow.
YouTube’s upload recommendations list AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio and a 48 kHz sample rate. These are format recommendations, not a way to prevent a Content ID match. YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.

What the discrepancy can—and cannot—tell you
If FFmpeg re-encoded or filtered the audio, YouTube received a differently processed signal. A different segment or timing could also be relevant to an investigation. But these are possibilities to check, not established explanations for a particular match. YouTube’s public guidance cited here does not disclose Content ID’s matching thresholds or show why one specific stream matched when an apparent source did not.
Do not assume that changing bitrate, sample rate, pitch, or an FFmpeg flag will reliably trigger or avoid a match. Without the command, stream metadata, notices, and compared media, there is no basis to isolate a particular cause. The useful result of the comparison is finding out what audio and workflow YouTube actually received.

Review the claim and your music rights
A Content ID match is not, by itself, a finding that your use is unauthorized. Read the claim details and verify the permission for the exact recording and composition, territory, platform, monetization, and live use. A licence may not cover every version or use.
YouTube says describing a track as “free” or crediting its creator does not prevent a copyright flag. It also may not know about rights purchased through another site or offline. YouTube points creators to original music, the Audio Library, and Creator Music; check the specific track’s terms for your intended use. YouTube: Tips to find safe music.

If you have a licence for third-party music but YouTube interrupts the live stream, check whether the rights owner has added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube says a licensed track can still interrupt a stream if the channel is not allowlisted. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams.
Content ID reference eligibility is a separate issue: YouTube says reference material must be exclusively controlled for the territories where the owner claims rights. It gives non-exclusively licensed music as an example of material that may not qualify as a reference. That does not determine whether your own use of a track is permitted. YouTube: Qualify for Content ID.
