To run a 24/7 synthwave radio channel on YouTube with OBS, first secure livestream rights for every track and ask each rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Then enable YouTube live access, prepare a YouTube broadcast and OBS scene, test the complete setup privately or as unlisted, and launch while monitoring the stream. OBS can keep sending a playlist, but it cannot grant music rights or guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
1. Clear music rights before building the stream
Make a track-by-track rights plan before you assemble a playlist. Confirm in writing that each track may be used in a YouTube livestream, in the territories where viewers can access it, and in an archived replay if you plan to keep one. Check any monetization and attribution conditions as well.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. YouTube Help says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” It also says that if you have licensed third-party content, you should ask the owner to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. See YouTube Help’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Do not assume a downloadable file or a “royalty-free” label is enough. Verify the actual license, livestream and replay permissions, monetization terms, attribution requirements, and the rights holder’s allowlisting process. Keep copies of permissions and confirmation that allowlisting is in place. Clear rights to artwork and animated visuals too; music permission does not cover the image on screen.

2. Enable YouTube live access in advance
YouTube requires a verified channel and says the channel must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. Its current live-stream help also sets a minimum age of 16 for streaming. YouTube for Artists advises enabling live streaming at least 24 hours before the first planned broadcast, so do not leave activation until launch day.
- Sign in to the YouTube channel that will host the radio stream and complete channel verification if needed.
- Open YouTube Studio and start the live-stream setup. Follow any verification or activation prompts shown for the channel.
- Allow at least 24 hours before the intended first broadcast, then return to Studio and confirm that live streaming is available.
Check the current requirements and channel status in YouTube Help’s “Get started with live streaming” and YouTube for Artists’ live-stream guidance. A channel that cannot go live should resolve that status before continuing with OBS configuration.
3. Prepare the YouTube broadcast and OBS scene
Set up the broadcast
Use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room or OBS’s YouTube integration to prepare the broadcast and connect the encoder. Confirm that OBS is connected to the intended channel and broadcast before starting the feed. Set an accurate title, description, category, and thumbnail in YouTube; use artwork you have permission to display.

The OBS Project forum guide describes creating or selecting a YouTube broadcast and using OBS to start and stop the encoder feed, but it is community-maintained and was originally published in 2015. Interface labels and workflows may have changed, so verify the current controls in OBS and YouTube Studio rather than relying on a button name from an older guide: OBS Project forum guide to streaming to YouTube.
Build a radio-style scene
For a straightforward synthwave radio presentation, create an OBS scene with the licensed music source and a simple still or loop, such as channel branding or cleared visualizer artwork. You can add currently playing metadata if you can keep it accurate. These are production choices, not YouTube requirements. Keep the scene uncluttered and check that it does not expose desktop notifications, private windows, or material you lack permission to use.
Set up the playlist or playback source so you know what happens when the final track ends: it should loop or advance as intended rather than leave the stream silent. Listen to the audio path in OBS; a visible meter alone does not confirm that the audience is receiving clean sound.

4. Test the full chain privately
Before a public launch, run the complete workflow as a private or unlisted test. YouTube for Artists recommends an unlisted test, and Google’s live-streaming checklist recommends testing the setup privately, including the connection and audio capture. The checklist is available at Google’s Live Streaming Checklist.
- Confirm the selected YouTube broadcast is the one OBS is sending to.
- Listen for silence, gaps between tracks, clipping, unexpected volume changes, or audio that stops when the playlist reaches its end.
- Watch the scene for black frames, unintended overlays, desktop notifications, and artwork that is not cleared for use.
- Check that the stream appears as expected in YouTube and that its privacy setting is still private or unlisted during the test.
- Test the restart procedure so you know how to reconnect OBS and resume the broadcast if either side disconnects.
These checks are operational recommendations; they do not replace written music permissions or Content ID allowlisting.
5. Choose horizontal, vertical, or dual presentation
Horizontal video is a practical default for a persistent radio visual and traditional desktop or TV viewing. YouTube for Artists describes vertical live streams as a way to appear in the Shorts feed on mobile, while horizontal streams provide the conventional viewing experience and flexibility for TV screens. YouTube also describes dual streaming through one broadcast when that option is available.

The formats differ in discovery and features, including Shorts-feed visibility, clickable links, and live ads. Availability can change, so confirm current options and behavior in Studio before designing around a specific feature. Compare the current platform guidance at YouTube for Artists and YouTube Help.
6. Launch and operate the channel
- In YouTube Studio, open the prepared broadcast and verify its title, visibility, and selected format.
- Start the OBS encoder feed and wait for YouTube to indicate that it is receiving the stream. Check the preview and listen to the live output before making the broadcast public.
- Set the broadcast public when the picture and audio are correct. Keep the Live Control Room available for status checks.
- Use a schedule for checking playlist playback, audio, network, and the computer running OBS. Record the steps for restarting the encoder and reconnecting it to the intended broadcast.
- After the stream, review the broadcast and any notices in YouTube Studio. If you chose to archive it, inspect the archive for later Content ID claims.
A “24/7” schedule is an operating goal, not a guarantee of platform uptime or an assurance that one broadcast can run indefinitely. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a universal maximum runtime or a particular archive-retention period. Verify current limits and archive behavior in Studio before choosing between one long broadcast and a restart-based schedule; do not build a plan around an assumed duration or retention window.

YouTube says an unallowlisted stream containing licensed third-party material can still be interrupted, and that Content ID claims on archived live streams may be made after the stream ends if you choose to archive it. Decide whether to keep an archive as part of the rights plan, then check the result in Studio. YouTube for Artists advises coordinating with a label or distributor when using copyright-protected music during a livestream. Platform guidance is not legal advice and does not substitute for track-specific permission.

YouTube for Artists lists shopping features, Supers, and ads among live monetization options. Feature access and eligibility depend on the channel and YouTube’s current rules; their availability does not predict income. A platform audience statistic is not a forecast for a new channel: YouTube for Artists reported that over 30% of daily logged-in YouTube viewers watched live content in Q2 2025, an observation about YouTube-wide viewing, not a promise of reach or revenue for a synthwave stream.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not offer live streaming | Verification or live access is incomplete, or the channel has a restriction. | Check the channel’s verification and live status in Studio, review current eligibility requirements, and allow time for activation before the planned launch. |
| The stream is interrupted after music starts | YouTube detected third-party content; a license may be in place but the channel may not be allowlisted. | Check YouTube’s notice and contact the rights holder or distributor to confirm that the correct channel was added to the Content ID allowlist. Do not simply restart with the same uncleared or unallowlisted material. |
| OBS is sending, but the YouTube preview is missing or wrong | The encoder may be connected to another broadcast or channel, or the prepared broadcast may not match the selected destination. | Compare the active broadcast in Studio with the destination configured in OBS, then reconnect to the intended broadcast and confirm the preview before going public. |
| Viewers hear silence, gaps, or distorted audio | The playback source, playlist transition, or audio path may not be behaving as expected. | Monitor the stream itself during a private test, inspect the OBS audio meters and source routing, and play through a playlist transition and its end behavior. |
| The stream ends unexpectedly or the archive is unavailable | A disconnect, platform limit, or archive behavior may be involved; a universal runtime or retention guarantee is not established. | Review the Live Control Room and Studio notices, test the reconnection procedure, and verify current duration and archive rules in Studio before planning another run. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use copyrighted music in a YouTube live stream?
Only if your rights cover the planned livestream and any replay or monetization use, and you have followed the rights holder’s Content ID allowlisting process. YouTube may interrupt an unallowlisted stream even when you have a license.
Will YouTube Content ID interrupt my live stream?
It can. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches, and continued detection can interrupt or terminate a stream. An archived live stream may also receive a Content ID claim after it ends.
