For a straightforward IRL broadcast, use the YouTube mobile app: check that your channel is eligible, choose vertical or horizontal framing, review the preview, and go live. An encoder is an alternative when you need overlays or external production gear.
Check whether your channel can go live
Before planning a stream, verify your YouTube channel and confirm it has no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. You must be at least 16 to livestream. YouTube’s live-streaming help page explains eligibility and available methods. If you plan to use a phone, check that mobile live streaming is available for your account and device.
YouTube says more than 600 million logged-in viewers watched live content, including archives, on average each day in August 2026, according to its YouTube Live update. That is a platform-wide figure, not a forecast of viewers for an individual stream.
Choose a phone-first or encoder workflow
| Option | Best for | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube mobile app | A walk, outing, vlog, or quick update streamed directly from a phone. | It is the simplest setup, but access depends on account and device eligibility. |
| Third-party encoder | A production that needs overlays or external cameras, microphones, or preamps. | It offers more production flexibility, with more setup complexity. |
YouTube also supports webcam and console methods, but the phone and encoder routes are the relevant choices for most real-world mobile broadcasts. You do not need a gimbal, external microphone, or dedicated encoder to start; add equipment only when it solves a specific problem for your stream.

Choose vertical, horizontal, or dual format before starting
Vertical video gives mobile viewers a full-screen experience and may appear in the Shorts feed. Horizontal video keeps a traditional 16:9 composition and supports features such as clickable links in chat. The right choice depends on what viewers need to see: a person speaking to the phone may suit vertical framing, while a wide scene may be easier to follow horizontally.
YouTube Live Control Room can create horizontal and vertical versions at the same time. Its layout options include center crop, fit-to-phone-width, and stacked; both formats share the same live chat. Review the vertical preview and layout before going live, particularly with center crop, which can cut off important parts of a wide scene. You cannot add the vertical version after the stream has started. See YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance for the available setup details.

Go live from your phone
- Confirm eligibility: verify the channel, check for live restrictions in the previous 90 days, and confirm you are at least 16.
- Open the YouTube mobile app: check that the option to start a live stream is available to your account.
- Set the composition: choose vertical or horizontal. If setting up dual format in Live Control Room, choose the layout and inspect both previews before starting.
- Check the scene: make sure the framing shows what you intend viewers to see. For a walking stream, a gimbal is an optional way to stabilize footage, not a YouTube requirement.
- Start the stream and monitor it: use YouTube’s moderation and privacy controls as appropriate while you broadcast.
Use an encoder when the production calls for it
Choose an encoder if you need overlays or want to connect production hardware such as external cameras, microphones, or preamps. Configure the encoder and production setup before the event, then verify the composition and any dual-format preview in Live Control Room before starting. YouTube supports encoder streaming, but the cited guidance does not establish a single encoder configuration suitable for every device or production.
Android compatibility for app integrations
Google’s Android Mobile Live documentation describes an integration flow that hands stream setup to the YouTube app. For that documented flow, it lists these requirements:

Follow YouTube’s live-stream rules
Everything in a live stream must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Restrictions can affect the broadcast and your account’s ability to go live. You cannot evade an active restriction by switching to another channel. Check YouTube’s live-streaming policy and eligibility guidance, and use its moderation and privacy controls for your broadcast.
