Start by checking which OBS Stats counter is rising: Dropped Frames (Network) points to the connection or bitrate; Skipped Frames (Encoding Lag) points to x264 running out of CPU capacity; and Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag points to GPU or scene-rendering workload. Fix that branch first—changing network settings will not cure CPU encoding overload, and a faster x264 preset will not repair an unstable upload route.
Identify which OBS counter is increasing
Open OBS’s View > Docks > Stats panel (labels and paths can vary by OBS version). Reproduce the problem during a representative test stream and watch the counters. A choppy-looking YouTube stream alone does not identify the cause.
- Dropped Frames (Network): frames are being discarded because the connection to YouTube’s remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS does this to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. See the OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide.
- Skipped Frames (Encoding Lag): x264, which encodes video on the CPU, cannot keep up with the selected output settings and preset. See the OBS x264 guide.
- Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag: OBS is short of GPU capacity to compose and render the scene. This can happen even if the CPU encoder is keeping up. See the OBS performance guide.
Note the counter that rises, when it happens, and whether it coincides with fast gameplay, scene changes, or network use by other devices. Change one relevant setting at a time and test again.
Fix network-dropped frames
Network drops concern the path from your computer to YouTube, not x264’s CPU workload. OBS’s connection guide, dated September 30, 2024, suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when choosing a bitrate. Treat that as a starting estimate: upload capacity that fluctuates or is shared can make a lower bitrate necessary.

1. Check the bitrate against stable upload capacity
- Run an upload-speed test under conditions similar to your planned stream. Consider whether other people or devices will use the connection during the broadcast.
- In OBS, open Settings > Output, set Output Mode to Advanced if needed, and check the streaming bitrate. Reduce it in measured steps if network drops continue. Menu names may vary by version.
- Use YouTube’s H.264 recommendations as an encoder reference, not proof that your internet route can sustain the rate. YouTube Help’s current live encoder settings table, accessed October 3, 2026, gives these recommended ingestion bitrates and minimums:
| Output resolution and frame rate | Recommended H.264 bitrate | Minimum H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps | 7 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published H.264 ingestion figures, not a guarantee of reliable delivery on a particular connection. YouTube recommends testing your upload speed and choosing a quality that the connection can deliver reliably. Its guidance is at YouTube Help: Live encoder settings.
2. Test the connection path
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test with wired Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. A cable is only relevant to this network branch; it will not fix rendering or encoding lag.
- Check whether a VPN, firewall or antivirus software, or network-optimization utility is interfering. Update network drivers and test again.
- If drops persist, investigate the router, modem, cable, network card, or ISP route rather than replacing hardware without evidence of a fault. OBS advises contacting your ISP if its connection troubleshooting does not resolve the problem.
3. Use OBS network options as diagnostics, not magic fixes
On Windows, OBS’s network settings include Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing; OBS says some users report improvement. IP Family: IPv4 Only can be tested as a diagnostic option. If it makes no difference, return to the default IPv4/IPv6 setting. Options and labels can vary by OBS version.

Enable Dynamic Bitrate can lower the bitrate during congestion and reduce network frame drops, but OBS warns that it does not repair the underlying connection and reduces video quality while active. Use it as a fallback when maintaining the stream matters more than a steady bitrate, not as proof the connection is fixed. Details are in the OBS connection guide.
Fix x264 encoding lag
If Skipped Frames (Encoding Lag) is rising, reduce the amount of work x264 must do on the CPU. The OBS x264 guide explains that an overloaded encoder can skip frames or distort the image and show “Encoding overloaded!” No single preset is best for every CPU, game, resolution, frame rate, and scene.

- Lower output resolution or frame rate. In OBS, check Settings > Video and reduce Output (Scaled) Resolution or Common FPS Values. Try one change at a time; lower resolution or FPS reduces picture detail or motion smoothness.
- Choose a faster x264 preset if needed. In Settings > Output > Streaming with Advanced Output Mode, choose a faster CPU Usage Preset. Faster presets generally use less CPU but are less compression-efficient, so image quality at the same bitrate can fall. Test with the actual game and scene rather than assuming a particular preset is universally optimal.
- Retest under load. Play or move through the same high-action parts that triggered the problem, with the intended audio and sources active. Confirm the encoding-lag counter stops increasing before restoring any setting.
Do not lower bitrate as the first response to encoding lag: bitrate concerns the delivery route, while the rising encoding counter identifies CPU processing as the immediate bottleneck. OBS’s guidance is at OBS x264 encoding performance troubleshooting.
Fix frames missed due to rendering lag
Rendering lag means OBS is not getting enough GPU capacity to render the scene in time. It is separate from x264 encoding lag, even though both can make a stream look choppy.

- Limit game frame rate or enable V-Sync. This can leave GPU capacity for OBS rather than letting the game use it all.
- Reduce game graphics settings if the GPU is at or near full load.
- Close other GPU-heavy programs while streaming.
- Simplify OBS scenes. Remove unnecessary sources, filters, and browser sources; sources may consume resources even when not visible, and browser sources and filters can be demanding.
- Reduce OBS output resolution or FPS if the scene still cannot render reliably.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS says this can allow Windows to reserve GPU capacity for OBS; it is a possible fix, not a guarantee.
Make one adjustment, then monitor the rendering-lag counter again. The OBS performance guide covers these steps at OBS: Optimizing your game for streaming.

YouTube says it detects encoder settings automatically by default. For H.264, YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. In OBS, these are typically in Settings > Output > Streaming when Advanced Output Mode is selected, though labels can vary by version. Use the recommended bitrate table above as a platform reference, then choose a rate your upload can sustain.
