If OBS reports network-dropped frames while you stream to YouTube, first check whether the problem is actually network-related, then compare a representative test over Ethernet and Wi-Fi at the planned bitrate. A dropped-frame counter points to an unstable connection to the ingest server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain; it does not, by itself, prove packet loss on your home broadband link.

What OBS dropped frames do—and do not—tell you

OBS describes dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as a network issue between your computer and the remote stream ingest server. That connection spans more than your home broadband: the encoder, local network, ISP route, and YouTube ingest endpoint can all be relevant. The counter alone cannot identify which part is responsible or establish that packets are being lost specifically inside your home ISP’s network.

First open OBS’s statistics or logs and distinguish Dropped Frames (Network) from render lag and encoding lag. Network drops indicate trouble sending the stream to the remote server or keeping up with the selected bitrate. Render lag and encoding lag point to different parts of the workflow: graphics rendering or video encoding. Changing network equipment will not directly fix a rendering or encoding bottleneck.

Run a repeatable test before changing settings

  1. Choose a safe test broadcast. Use a private or unlisted stream, or another suitable test setup, rather than diagnosing during an important public event.
  2. Recreate the real workload. Include representative audio and on-screen movement; an idle scene may not reveal the same issue as the planned stream.
  3. Watch both OBS and YouTube. Monitor OBS statistics and YouTube’s stream health and messages while the test runs.
  4. Record the conditions. Note when drops begin, the encoder bitrate, selected ingest/server, whether the computer is on Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and whether other devices are uploading.

YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual stream and monitoring stream health. Keeping those observations makes the comparisons below more useful: change one factor at a time, and compare results under similar conditions.

Check whether your upload can sustain the bitrate

A speed test is a useful starting point, not proof that your connection can sustain the stream continuously. Compare the configured bitrate with stable upload capacity under realistic household conditions. Other people or devices uploading, short-term variation, and the route to the chosen ingest server can affect the result.

Video setting YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, accessed 2026; they are not a promise that a particular broadband connection or route will hold that bitrate. YouTube’s live encoder settings page also publishes minimums and recommended ranges for AV1 and H.265; use the figures for the codec and video mode you actually configured rather than treating H.264 values as universal.

OBS suggests lowering video bitrate when frames drop and gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. Treat that as a heuristic, not a universal safety threshold: an unstable upload or a busy household may require a lower bitrate, and a speed test does not measure every fluctuation on the route to YouTube. Reduce the bitrate for a test and observe whether network drops improve. If they do, the original rate may have exceeded what was sustainable at that time, though this alone does not identify the source of the limit.

Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet and inspect the home network

If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, run the same test over a wired Ethernet connection. OBS recommends wired streaming because Wi-Fi can be unstable. If Ethernet improves the result, the wireless link or its conditions are a useful area to investigate; it does not prove every other part of the route is healthy. If the problem remains, that also does not rule out a local equipment issue.

If you need a cable to conduct the comparison, check that its connectors match your computer and router or network switch, and that it is long enough for the route you need. A cable enables a test; it cannot fix ISP congestion, a faulty modem or router, or a route or ingest issue.

Restarting the modem and router is a basic connectivity check. Also inspect the cable and the network path, including the computer’s network adapter, switches, and extenders. OBS lists these as possible fault points, not parts proven faulty by dropped frames. If you are unsure whether equipment needs replacement, ask your ISP before buying hardware; do not replace a router based only on the OBS counter.

Isolate software, drivers, and the route to YouTube

  • VPN: Temporarily test without VPN software, if doing so is safe and permitted for your network. Compare results rather than assuming the VPN is the cause.
  • Security software: Check whether firewall or security software is interfering with OBS’s connection. Avoid leaving protections disabled; use the software’s supported settings and restore normal protection after a controlled test.
  • Network utilities: Some bundled utilities claim to prioritize traffic and may affect OBS. Check their settings or test with them disabled according to their instructions.
  • Network drivers: Check for outdated network-adapter drivers and update through the computer or adapter maker’s supported process.
  • Ingest or service comparison: If available, compare another ingest server, or test another service. A change in results can help narrow whether the behavior is specific to one server or service, but it does not certify the whole route as healthy.

OBS documents Windows-only network optimization and TCP-pacing options as troubleshooting experiments; some users report improvement, but these settings are not guaranteed fixes. Change them only if you understand how to revert them. OBS also offers dynamic bitrate, which can lower quality when the connection cannot keep up and may reduce drops; it can mask the symptom, but does not repair the underlying connection problem.

Check RTMPS settings when the encoder cannot connect

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Protocol checks are especially relevant when OBS fails to connect or times out; they are not a likely explanation for every intermittent dropped-frame case.

Verify the stream URL and host against YouTube’s current encoder setup, and make sure the encoder is configured for the matching protocol. Google’s RTMPS guidance specifies an rtmps URL, a valid YouTube ingestion host and application path, port 443, TLS, and correct SNI hostname handling. An SSL error can result from using an RTMP host where RTMPS is expected, the wrong port, or TLS/SNI handling. A timeout can occur if cleartext RTMP is sent to an RTMPS endpoint.

Use the endpoint and stream-key details shown in your YouTube live setup rather than copying an old server URL. Treat the stream key as a secret: do not publish it or include it in screenshots or support messages.

Escalate with evidence, not a guess

If the OBS troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, contact your ISP and provide the test timestamps, results, configured bitrate, selected ingest, and whether Ethernet changed the outcome. Include relevant OBS logs only after checking that they do not expose your stream key or other sensitive information. An ISP may be able to investigate or make changes on its end, and congestion can occur along the route. These facts make escalation worthwhile, but do not establish ISP fault before the connection is investigated.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a different setup from troubleshooting a live OBS feed: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
