In OBS, enable Loop on the video’s Media Source. Then test the stream, confirm YouTube receives the expected settings, and monitor stream health while live.
Set up the loop in OBS
Loop one video

Open OBS and add a Media Source to the scene you plan to stream.

Open the source properties, select the prerecorded video, and enable Loop. OBS defines this option as replaying the file after playback completes. This repeats playback, but does not guarantee that the end-to-start transition will be visually or audibly seamless; inspect and test the file itself.
Loop a playlist
For multiple clips, use OBS’s VLC Video source with a looping playlist. Check the playlist order and test transitions between files before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.

Configure the encoder for 4K at 60 fps
Set the output resolution to 3840×2160, the frame rate to 60 fps, and rate control to CBR. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. At 60 fps, two seconds is 120 frames.
Choose a codec and bitrate
YouTube’s published encoder-settings guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, gives these ingestion settings for 4K/2160p at 60 fps. The figures are recommendations for sending the stream to YouTube, not a guarantee of the quality viewers will receive.

Choose a codec your encoder supports, and make sure your actual upload connection can sustain the selected rate. The lower recommended AV1/HEVC bitrate is useful only if your hardware and workflow support those codecs reliably; H.264 remains an option when it is the compatible choice.
Protocol and color settings
YouTube’s guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP. For an SDR stream, its advanced-settings guidance recommends Rec. 709 color and 8-bit depth. Do not apply HDR settings to an SDR workflow. YouTube describes H.265/HEVC for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.

Create the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS

Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast.

Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast into the corresponding server and key fields in OBS.

Start streaming from OBS and check Live Control Room for the incoming signal and stream-health messages.
Treat the stream key like a password: it tells the encoder where to send video and allows YouTube to accept it. Keep it private. A custom key can preserve settings for reuse; if a key is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room.

YouTube detects encoder settings and transcodes a live stream into other output formats for viewers. For 4K, YouTube does not offer the low-latency option, so plan for normal latency.
Test the stream and verify the keyframe interval

Test audio and representative movement before the real broadcast. YouTube specifically recommends testing with audio and movement similar to what the live stream will contain.

Check the upload bitrate on the connection you will actually use. A configured bitrate is not useful if the connection cannot sustain it.

Review YouTube’s stream-health diagnostics while live. Its Live Streaming API can report GOP/keyframe diagnostics: intervals longer than four seconds are flagged, and a very short GOP can reduce image quality.

Verify the received GOP rather than assuming the encoder setting survived encoding and ingestion unchanged. The target remains a fixed two-second interval.

Watch and listen to the video’s loop point. The loop setting repeats the source, but does not fix a cut, gap, or audio mismatch in the media itself.
Fix common problems
YouTube reports a keyframe interval over four seconds
Confirm that the encoder is set to a fixed two-second interval, then check YouTube’s received GOP diagnostics again. If the received interval still differs, inspect the encoder configuration and encoding path rather than assuming the displayed setting is being applied as intended.
The stream buffers or cannot sustain its bitrate
Check the actual upload connection and compare its capacity with the selected codec’s recommended rate. YouTube’s figures are ingestion recommendations; they do not ensure that a particular connection can carry the stream consistently.

The video does not repeat cleanly
Confirm Loop is enabled on the Media Source, or that the VLC Video playlist is configured to loop. Then inspect the media’s last and first frames and audio: OBS repeats the file or playlist, but a seamless join depends on the content.
Live streaming is not available yet
If this is the first time enabling live streaming, YouTube says setup may take up to 24 hours. Allow for that before scheduling the broadcast.
