How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Livestream with Prerecorded Videos on Google Cloud Run

A practical architecture for a continuous prerecorded YouTube livestream on Google Cloud Run: why services time out, how to choose a publisher resource, and what to configure for YouTube Live.

To run a 24/7 YouTube livestream with prerecorded videos on Google Cloud Run, build a restartable publisher that reads video files from durable cloud storage, sends them to YouTube Live with an encoder such as FFmpeg, and reconnects when a process or connection fails. Do not hold one Cloud Run service request open as the stream: service requests time out after at most 60 minutes. Start by evaluating a Cloud Run worker pool or long-lived instance for the publisher, and use a service for control and status if needed. Availability, quotas, and operating details vary by region and should be checked before deployment.

Choose a Cloud Run resource that can host a continuous publisher

Cloud Run has different resource types for different lifetimes. The key design decision is not simply how to launch a container, but which resource can keep the publishing process running and how it will recover when that process is stopped.

Cloud Run option Fit for a continuous YouTube publisher Important consideration
Worker pool Strongest starting point among the Cloud Run resource types described for always-on background work. Google describes worker pools as handling always-on workloads. Check current availability, quotas, scaling behavior, and pricing in your target region.
Long-lived instance Potential fit for a singleton publisher. Google identifies instances as supporting long-lived singleton workloads. Verify the current operating contract and regional availability for your intended use.
Service Poor fit for one continuous publishing request; useful for a control plane. A service request times out after at most 60 minutes. Use a service for tasks such as start, stop, configuration, or status rather than as the lifetime of a 24/7 stream.
Job Better suited to finite processing than permanent publishing. Jobs run tasks to completion. Relaunching a job can create stream gaps and requires coordination of state and restarts.

Google Cloud’s request-timeout documentation, updated September 30, 2026, says the default service request timeout is five minutes (300 seconds) and the maximum is 60 minutes (3,600 seconds). At timeout, the request connection closes and the service returns a 504 response. Google recommends retries and tolerance for reconnections for requests longer than 15 minutes; that is a resilience recommendation, not an alternative to the 60-minute ceiling. A client also is not guaranteed to reconnect to the same instance.

For service background processing, instance-based billing provides CPU through the instance lifecycle, while request-based billing allocates CPU only while handling requests. That does not make an instance permanent: autoscaling can still stop instances, and minimum instances can keep selected instances active. Google documents a 10-second grace period after SIGTERM before a terminating instance is stopped. Design for shutdown and resumption rather than assuming a container will run indefinitely.

Confirm YouTube eligibility and create the live destination

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with live streaming enabled, and says the channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Resolve eligibility before building a deployment around the channel.
  2. Create or configure the live stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the destination and obtain the ingest server URL and stream key associated with it. YouTube supports software encoders.
  3. Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential. Store it in a secret-management mechanism and inject it into the publisher at runtime. Do not commit it to source control, bake it into the container image, or print it in logs. Rotate it if it is exposed.
  4. Check rights before scheduling. Use only video and audio you own or are authorized to stream. A video being prerecorded or already online does not itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for the channel and content; technical availability to stream does not guarantee monetization eligibility.

Keep the media library and playback state outside the container

Store source videos in durable object storage rather than treating a container’s local filesystem as the canonical library. The publisher should read an asset, prepare compatible output, and publish it to YouTube. For a single-video channel, the playback loop can repeat one file; a playlist publisher can advance through a sequence of assets.

Externalize the desired running state and enough playlist or playback position to resume after a replacement instance starts. This is an application design choice, not a Cloud Run playlist feature. Define how the publisher behaves when an asset is missing, corrupt, still uploading, or cannot be fetched. Avoid relying on one long-lived media download or one persistent upload connection as the only recovery mechanism: reopen media and reconnect to YouTube after transient failures, using bounded retries, backoff, and useful logs.

Set encoder output for YouTube Live

Use the exact ingest server and stream key for the selected YouTube destination. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate, and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.

Choose bitrate from YouTube’s current encoder-settings table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not reuse one bitrate for every output profile. As one profile-specific example, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps. The 14 Mbps figure is YouTube’s recommendation, not a measurement of a particular Cloud Run deployment.

For prerecorded media, decide whether the publisher should copy compatible audio/video streams or re-encode them. Copying can avoid unnecessary encoding work when the source already matches the intended output; re-encoding is needed when it does not. Test the actual output in YouTube Live Control Room preview before relying on a playlist for a full-day schedule. Cloud Run CPU needs depend on the chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, and encode complexity, so measure the workload rather than assuming a fixed allocation is sufficient.

Build restart, reconnect, and monitoring behavior into the publisher

  1. Package the process. Build a container image with the chosen encoder and a supervisor or entrypoint. It should report health, distinguish recoverable connection failures from unrecoverable configuration errors, and exit clearly when it cannot proceed.
  2. Handle termination. On shutdown, stop cleanly where possible and persist the state needed to resume. Because Cloud Run documents a 10-second grace period after SIGTERM for a terminating instance, do not depend on a long final save or a graceful stream ending to preserve progress.
  3. Reconnect deliberately. Retry transient media-fetch and YouTube-ingest failures with bounded backoff. Recreate long-lived outbound connections after resets; Google Cloud’s troubleshooting guidance notes that infrastructure updates can reset outbound connections.
  4. Log useful signals. Record process starts and exits, failed reconnects, prolonged periods without output, asset errors, and growing error counts. Keep secrets out of logs. Alert on a stalled publisher, not just a container crash.
  5. Validate the live output. Start the encoder ahead of the intended public schedule, inspect the Live Control Room preview for audio and video, and confirm that the stream recovers after a planned interruption. YouTube advises creators to continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.

YouTube’s Streaming tips include 20% bandwidth headroom for a primary stream plus a backup stream in the stated local streaming-network scenario. That figure is not a general Cloud Run egress-sizing formula. For a cloud publisher, account for the selected stream bitrate and any backup design separately.

Estimate the actual monthly cost before you deploy

There is no deployment-independent monthly figure for a 24/7 Cloud Run publisher. Cost depends on the chosen resource, CPU and memory allocation, active duration, region, storage, network egress, and any control-plane services. Instance-based billing charges for the running instance lifecycle. Use Google’s current pricing calculator with the target region and planned configuration, and include storage and outbound data transfer rather than comparing CPU alone. The Cloud Run CPU documentation describes service CPU configurations up to eight vCPUs; that does not establish the right size or cost for a worker pool or a specific encode workload.

Before committing to an architecture, verify regional resource availability, quotas, scaling and termination behavior, secret access permissions, expected egress, and the resulting estimate. If tightly controlled process lifetime or high availability is a hard requirement, compare a VM-based or specialist cloud-encoder design against the same criteria; the choice should be based on the recovery behavior and costs your channel needs.
