To loop recorded calculus lectures on YouTube Live, run OBS Studio on a computer, add the lecture as a looping Media Source (or use a VLC Video source for a playlist), and send OBS’s output to a YouTube encoder stream. The computer must stay on and connected while it streams. Before you begin, confirm you have rights to every lecture and any slides, music, images, or other material included.
Before you set up the stream
Check your channel’s livestream access
YouTube requires a verified channel with no livestream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned start. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says users must be at least 16 to livestream. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming start guide and encoder setup guide.
Confirm content rights
Use only lectures and embedded material you are entitled to stream. YouTube’s terms put responsibility for obtaining the necessary rights on the content provider. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches; if matched material remains in the broadcast, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. Even when you have a licence, ask the rights owner whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s live copyright guidance and livestream terms.
Set up a looping lecture in OBS
Option 1: Repeat one lecture
- Open OBS Studio and select the scene that will carry the lecture. If you do not have one, create a scene in the Scenes panel.
- In Sources, select + and add a Media Source. Give it a recognizable name.
- In the source properties, select the lecture video file. Enable Loop, then confirm the file plays in the OBS preview.
- Check that the video fits the canvas and that its audio is audible at a sensible level. A prerecorded file does not require a camera, microphone, or capture card for this workflow.
Option 2: Rotate through several lectures
- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS needs it to expose the VLC Video source.
- In OBS, select + in Sources and add VLC Video Source.
- Add the lecture files to its playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist so playback restarts after the final item, then confirm the playlist plays in the preview.
OBS documents that its VLC source supports playlists, unlike Media Source, and that Loop Playlist controls whether the list starts over. If VLC Video Source does not appear, check that VLC is installed and compatible with your OBS installation. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using an encoder.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from YouTube into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in a recording, screenshot, or public post.
- In OBS, configure the output for the lecture’s resolution and frame rate, your available upload capacity, and YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval for RTMP/RTMPS. For H.264 at 1080p30, its settings table lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate; other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs have different requirements. Check the current YouTube encoder settings table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
- Start playback in OBS and check the YouTube preview and stream-health messages before going live. Start the encoder from OBS, then confirm the broadcast appears on its YouTube watch page.
Test and monitor the broadcast
Before relying on a long-running stream, test it with representative lecture footage, including typical movement and audio. Check playback on the watch page and a mobile device, and confirm the right page is accessible to the intended audience. While live, monitor OBS playback and YouTube stream health, especially when one lecture ends, another begins, or the playlist loops. YouTube recommends testing, checking health messages, and monitoring audio and video during live events; these checks reduce avoidable setup errors but do not guarantee uninterrupted service. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Plan for replays separately
A continuous 24/7 broadcast is not a dependable way to create one complete replay archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that guidance does not promise an archive for a stream that runs longer. Keep your original lecture files and an independent recording or publishing plan if viewers need complete, individually discoverable lecture replays. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Understand the monetization risk
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to livestreams. Its policy uses the term “inauthentic content” for repetitive or mass-produced material and says such content is ineligible for monetization. That is a policy risk, not a prediction of how YouTube will assess a particular calculus channel: educational subject matter or self-production alone does not establish monetization eligibility. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The lecture stops at the end of the file. | Loop is off, or the wrong source type is configured. | For one file, open Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a playlist, use VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist. |
| VLC Video Source is missing. | VLC is not installed or is incompatible with the OBS installation. | Install a compatible VLC version, then reopen OBS and check Sources again. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS feed. | The stream URL or key may be missing or incorrect, or the channel may not yet be enabled for livestreaming. | Recheck the server URL and key in YouTube Studio and OBS. If this is the channel’s first stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation and confirm eligibility. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or playback stutters. | Output settings may not match the available upload capacity or YouTube’s guidance. | Check the chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR setting, keyframe interval, and bitrate against YouTube’s current table. Test under conditions similar to the actual broadcast. |
| The live stream is interrupted or terminated. | A copyright match may have been detected, among other possible causes. | Review YouTube’s alert and confirm rights for every element. If licensed content triggered a match, ask the rights owner about adding your channel to its Content ID allowlist. |
