You can earn on YouTube through ads and YouTube Premium, fan-funding features such as memberships and Super Thanks, live-stream tools such as Super Chat, and product sales through Shopping. The route you can use depends on your channel’s eligibility, location, content and audience; meeting a threshold lets you apply to the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), but does not guarantee acceptance or income. Check YouTube Studio → Earn for the options available to your channel.
How YouTube monetization works
YPP is the main route to YouTube’s built-in monetization features. A channel applies after meeting the relevant eligibility requirements, and YouTube reviews the channel against its policies. Once accepted, you may still need to enable individual modules and meet their feature-specific requirements. Availability varies by country or region and channel status. See YouTube’s YPP eligibility overview.
There are two important eligibility stages. The expanded YPP tier can open certain fan-funding and Shopping features; the higher threshold is required for Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed ads and YouTube Premium revenue sharing. The thresholds below apply in regions where expanded YPP is available, and the watch-hour and Shorts-view paths are alternatives, not cumulative requirements.
| Stage | Subscribers | Additional threshold | What it can unlock |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expanded YPP | 500 | At least 3 valid public uploads in the prior 90 days, plus either 3,000 qualified public long-form watch hours in the previous 365 days or 3 million qualified public Shorts views in the previous 90 days | Eligible fan-funding and Shopping features, subject to location and feature requirements |
| Higher YPP threshold | 1,000 | Either 4,000 qualified public long-form watch hours in the previous 365 days or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the previous 90 days | Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed ads and YouTube Premium revenue sharing, subject to acceptance and module requirements |
Shorts Feed watch time does not count toward the long-form watch-hour path. Paid campaign views and watch time do not count toward these thresholds, apart from qualifying organic follow-on views described by YouTube. The expanded tier is not available in every country; confirm your channel’s status in Studio and consult YouTube’s overview of ways to earn.

Eligibility is not acceptance
Beyond the numerical thresholds, YouTube lists requirements including being in a supported country or region, following channel monetization policies, having no active Community Guidelines strikes, enabling 2-Step Verification, having access to advanced features, and linking an active AdSense for YouTube account. Apply and track the review through YouTube Studio → Earn. YouTube says it reviews the channel as a whole using automated systems and human reviewers. Reaching the threshold makes you eligible to apply; it does not automatically enroll you.
Ways to earn and how they differ
These routes suit different viewing habits and creator workloads. YouTube does not publish a universal earnings forecast that makes them directly rankable by income. Actual results depend on audience activity, the applicable module and channel circumstances.
| Route | How it works | Best fit operationally | Eligibility notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Watch Page ads | Ads shown on eligible long-form videos and live streams can generate a creator share of net ad revenue. | Creators with eligible long-form viewing who can make advertiser-suitable content consistently. | Requires the higher YPP threshold and ad-module eligibility; individual videos may receive limited or no ad earnings. |
| Shorts Feed ads | Revenue from ads between Shorts is allocated through the Shorts Creator Pool; creators receive a share based on their share of views. | Creators focused on Shorts and able to build eligible viewing at scale. | Requires the higher YPP threshold and Shorts monetization eligibility. |
| YouTube Premium | Eligible creators share revenue when Premium subscribers watch their content. | Creators whose content is watched by Premium members. | Available through YPP’s higher ad-revenue eligibility, subject to the relevant terms. |
| Channel memberships | Viewers make recurring payments in exchange for creator-defined member perks. | Creators able to offer ongoing benefits and serve a community. | Feature-specific availability and requirements apply; eligible fan-funding features may be available at the expanded YPP stage. |
| Super Chat and Super Stickers | Viewers pay to highlight messages or stickers during eligible live chat. | Creators who livestream and interact with viewers in live chat. | Feature availability and requirements vary; check Studio. |
| Super Thanks | Viewers pay to show appreciation on eligible videos or Shorts. | Creators with eligible video or Shorts audiences who want a one-off viewer-support option. | Feature availability and requirements vary; check Studio. |
| YouTube Shopping | Eligible creators can promote products from their own store or tag products from other brands. YouTube says eligible creators may earn commission on third-party products featured through the program. | Creators whose content naturally supports product discovery or sales. | Availability, eligibility and terms vary; check Studio. |
See YouTube’s feature-by-feature monetization guide for current module details. An ad appearing on a video is not proof that its creator receives a share: YouTube says it may serve ads on content from channels that do not meet the higher YPP eligibility criteria, without making those channels eligible for ad revenue sharing.

What the published revenue shares mean
YouTube’s earnings overview, with current terms viewed on 2026-10-03, lists these module-specific shares. They are not guaranteed take-home amounts: the percentages use different revenue bases, and actual earnings depend on activity and the creator’s agreement.
| Module | Published creator share | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks | 70% | Net revenues |
| Watch Page ads | 55% | Net Watch Page ad revenue |
| Shorts Feed ads | 45% | Revenue allocated to the creator from the Shorts Creator Pool, based on the creator’s share of views |
YouTube states that there are no guarantees under the YouTube partner agreement about how much or whether a creator will be paid. It does not provide a universal income-per-view figure that applies across channels, formats and audiences. For the full terms and payment explanations, see YouTube’s partner earnings overview.

Protect monetization by following the rules
YPP monetization policies apply both to channels seeking entry and to those already enrolled. They cover Community Guidelines, terms, copyright and rights clearance, advertiser-friendly content, and feature-specific terms. A channel can meet the numeric threshold and still be rejected or later face restrictions.
- Use content you have rights to monetize. Copyright or Content ID claims can affect earnings. Make sure you have the rights needed for every video element, including music and footage.
- Avoid invalid traffic and fake engagement. Artificial views, clicks or engagement can result in earnings being withheld or adjusted, and can trigger enforcement.
- Check advertiser suitability. Content that does not meet advertiser-friendly guidelines or other restrictions can receive limited or no ad earnings even when the channel is in YPP.
- Keep the channel active. YouTube reserves the right to turn off monetization for channels with no uploads or Posts-tab activity for six months or more; this is a platform right, not an automatic outcome in every case.
Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies and check the individual video’s monetization status in Studio when earnings change or a claim appears.

Set up payment and understand taxes
AdSense for YouTube is YouTube’s payment route for finalized earnings. YouTube says finalized previous-month earnings are added to the AdSense for YouTube balance between the 7th and 12th of the current month. Analytics revenue is an estimate until finalized and may change because of invalid traffic, Content ID claims, disputes or campaign types; investigations can also delay payment.

Creators may have tax obligations where they live, and Google requires U.S. tax information from monetizing creators regardless of location so it can determine withholding on U.S.-viewer earnings. Your final tax liability depends on your circumstances and local rules; consult your tax authority or a qualified tax professional rather than treating platform reporting as personal tax advice.

If your channel uses prerecorded videos as a continuous YouTube livestream, that can support a live programming format, but it is separate from YPP eligibility and does not guarantee monetization. Rights, advertiser suitability and YouTube policy still apply. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams to YouTube only.
