Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesClosing the Remote Desktop client normally disconnects you from Windows; it does not, by itself, sign you out or stop applications on the Azure VM. If your YouTube stream ends, check whether you signed out or reset the session, a disconnected-session timeout ended it, or the VM itself shut down. Those are possibilities to investigate—not a confirmed diagnosis of your VM, whose Windows edition, RDP client, browser, actions, and policies are unknown.
First, distinguish closing Remote Desktop from ending the Windows session
Closing the RDP client window ordinarily disconnects the remote session. Choosing Sign out in Windows ends the user session, while resetting a session terminates its running applications and may lose data. Shutting down the VM is a separate action that stops its processes.
Microsoft says applications running when a session is disconnected are automatically running when the user reconnects to that session. See the Microsoft tsdiscon documentation.
Reconnect before changing anything
After closing the RDP client, reconnect to the same VM and check whether the browser and playback state are still present. If they are, the client close was a disconnect and the session survived. If the browser is gone or you have a fresh session, investigate sign-out, reset, a timeout, or a session policy. Avoid signing out or resetting a session that may contain unsaved work.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check whether a disconnected-session timeout is ending the session
In a managed Remote Desktop Services setup, an administrator can configure Set time limit for disconnected sessions at Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Session Time Limits. When such a limit is configured, it can end a disconnected session after the allowed period. Microsoft warns that a low limit can terminate sessions when a network connection is unavailable for too long; centrally managed policy may prevent an individual user from changing it. See Microsoft’s Start VM on Connect FAQ.
Use the timing as a clue, not proof
If playback stops immediately, look first for an explicit sign-out, reset, shutdown, or other event that ended the session. If it stops only after a delay, a disconnected-session timeout is one possibility, but timing alone does not establish the cause. An administrator can inspect the session state and applicable policy.

Verify the Azure VM is still running
Check the VM’s power state separately from the Windows session. A disconnected or signed-out session and Azure VM deallocation are distinct lifecycle events. Microsoft says signing users out does not deallocate their VMs; deallocation requires separate configuration or automation. Conversely, when the VM itself is shut down, its processes cannot continue. The Microsoft FAQ covers the distinction.
Apply Azure Virtual Desktop guidance only if this is Azure Virtual Desktop
A standalone Azure VM reached directly over RDP is not automatically an Azure Virtual Desktop deployment. AVD-specific settings and features should not be assumed to apply to an ordinary VM.

Lock behavior depends on the deployment
For Azure Virtual Desktop with Microsoft Entra single sign-on, Microsoft’s documented default is to disconnect the session on lock, and policy can change that behavior. This does not establish the default for every standalone Azure VM or authentication setup. See Microsoft’s session lock behavior guide.
Multimedia redirection is not a background-stream guarantee
AVD multimedia redirection can support YouTube video in configured, supported Edge or Chrome sessions by sending the video bitstream to the local device for decoding and rendering. It is a playback optimization during a remote session—not documentation that playback continues after disconnection or sign-out. It also requires the relevant components and configuration. See Microsoft’s multimedia redirection guide.

Work through the diagnosis in this order
- Identify exactly what you did: close the RDP client, choose Sign out, reset the session, lock Windows, or shut down the VM. These actions have different effects.
- Reconnect to the same session: check whether the browser and playback state remain. If not, investigate session termination rather than assuming the client close itself stopped the app.
- Note when playback ends: immediate versus delayed stopping helps prioritize checks, but neither timing pattern proves a cause.
- Check Azure power state: confirm whether the VM is running independently of the Windows session state.
- Ask the administrator to inspect policy and session state: especially disconnected-session limits and any managed sign-out, lock, or reset behavior.
- Confirm the deployment type: apply AVD lock or multimedia-redirection guidance only if the machine is actually in Azure Virtual Desktop and the feature is configured.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, rather than to keep a browser session on this Azure VM alive, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera, and it does not fix an RDP session or stream to platforms other than YouTube.
