To send a live source from Wowza Streaming Engine to YouTube Live, create the YouTube event first, then add a dedicated YouTube Live stream target in Wowza. Map the event’s Stream URL to Wowza’s destination host and application fields, enter YouTube’s generated stream key as the destination stream name, and enable both the application’s stream targets and the individual target.
Before you configure the target
This procedure is for Wowza Streaming Engine, which has a dedicated YouTube Live target form. It assumes an incoming source stream is already connected to Wowza; this target forwards that stream to YouTube rather than creating the source. Wowza Video uses a separate custom RTMP workflow and different fields, so do not mix its instructions with the Streaming Engine steps. - Access to the Wowza Streaming Engine Live application and its Stream Targets settings.
- A YouTube live event and its Stream URL and generated stream key.
- An incoming Wowza source stream whose name you can select in the target form.
1. Get the YouTube event’s URL and key
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live event.
- Open the event’s Stream Settings and record its Stream URL and generated stream key/name. YouTube’s encoder setup likewise uses the server URL and stream key; see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Keep the generated key private. It is a credential: do not include it in screenshots, public notes, or support messages that do not need it.
2. Add a YouTube Live target in Wowza Streaming Engine
- In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, open the relevant Live application and choose Stream Targets.
- Select Add Stream Target. Under Third-Party Target Destinations, choose YouTube Live.
- Enter a unique, descriptive target name so you can identify this destination later.
- For Source Stream Name, select the incoming stream already connected to the application. This is the source Wowza will send to YouTube.
3. Map YouTube’s RTMP details to Wowza’s fields
Use the actual Stream URL supplied for your YouTube event. Wowza’s example URL is rtmp://abc.rtmp.youtube.com/live2; in that example, the destination host is abc.rtmp.youtube.com and the application name is live2.

The URL supplies the host and application, while the generated key is a separate value. Do not paste the full URL into the host field or substitute the key’s friendly name for its generated code.

4. Enable the target and start the source
- Save or add the target.
- Enable Stream Targets for the Wowza application.
- Check the individual YouTube target and enable it if its status is Disabled. Adding a target does not by itself mean it is enabled.
- Start or confirm the incoming source stream, then monitor the target status and YouTube event preview.
What “Waiting” means
Wowza describes Waiting as an enabled target that is not yet pushing. The source may not be connected, or Wowza may still be initializing its destination connection. Treat the status as a prompt to check source connectivity and allow initialization, not as proof by itself that the stream key is wrong.
Quality and YouTube renditions
Wowza states in its official Streaming Engine YouTube guide: “YouTube automatically creates lower-bitrate renditions of the stream for adaptive bitrate playback. No additional configuration is required.” In this workflow, Wowza’s target forwards the incoming source; YouTube creates those lower-bitrate playback versions.

Troubleshooting
- The target is Disabled: Enable Stream Targets for the Live application, then enable the individual target.
- The target stays Waiting: Confirm the selected source stream is connected and flowing. Allow Wowza to initialize the destination connection before treating the status as a failure.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck that the host and application were parsed from the correct event’s Stream URL, and that the generated stream key—not its friendly label—is in Destination Stream Name.
- The connection does not reach the destination: Confirm the RTMP port is
1935unless YouTube’s current event instructions say otherwise, and verify the actual Stream URL rather than copying Wowza’s example values. - The stream appears to use the wrong source: Verify Source Stream Name points to the incoming stream connected to this Wowza application.
- You are following Wowza Video instructions: Stop and use the guide for the product actually in use. Wowza Video uses a custom RTMP target with primary URL and stream name/key fields; Streaming Engine uses the dedicated YouTube Live target form.
