Apple documents dedicated video encode and decode hardware, and OBS supports Apple Silicon hardware H.264 streaming. Whether the full setup holds up depends on the source videos, OBS workload, network upload, and power and recovery settings. If you mean watching a 4K YouTube Live stream rather than broadcasting one, the requirements are different and generally less demanding.
First, distinguish watching from broadcasting
Watching a 4K60 YouTube Live stream
Playback uses the Mac’s internet download connection and browser. YouTube recommends a sustained 20 Mbps connection for 4K UHD playback, according to its 2026 guidance. Live video can require faster connections and more processing power than ordinary videos, so that recommendation is not a guarantee for every stream or network. Use an up-to-date browser and test the actual stream.
Broadcasting a playlist to YouTube Live
Broadcasting means playing or sourcing the videos, rendering the scene, encoding the live output, and uploading it to YouTube. For this task, YouTube’s 4K60 ingest recommendations—not the 20 Mbps playback figure—are relevant. The Mac must also keep the playlist and streaming software running reliably for the intended duration.
What the M2 Mac mini’s specifications establish
Apple’s specifications for the 2023 Mac mini with M2 list an 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, memory configurations of 8 GB, 16 GB, or 24 GB, and a media engine with hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW, plus video decode and encode engines. These capabilities support the feasibility of video playback and encoding, but Apple does not certify a continuous 4K60 YouTube broadcast workload. Apple’s Mac mini (2023) technical specifications

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The M2 Mac mini (2023) can also drive an external display up to 4K (3840 × 2160) at 60 Hz over HDMI under supported display configurations. Display output at that resolution and refresh rate does not prove that a particular playlist, encoder, and streaming setup can run continuously. | Ingest codec | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not promises that a connection will remain stable. Use the recommended figure for the codec you actually send, and leave upload headroom for normal network variation. A stable upload matters more than a one-time speed-test peak.
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Latency: YouTube says the low-latency option is unavailable for 4K. At 4K, streams are optimized for quality at normal latency.

OBS can use Apple hardware encoding, but compatibility is not a runtime guarantee
OBS lists Apple Silicon among its supported Mac hardware and requires macOS 11 or later on the cited system-requirements page. OBS explicitly warns that meeting its basic requirements does not guarantee streaming or recording at a particular resolution, frame rate, encoder, or scene complexity. Its hardware-encoding guidance says Apple VideoToolbox is supported on Apple Silicon and that streaming with it on Apple Silicon is supported with H.264. Neither page publishes an M2 Mac mini benchmark or continuous-runtime guarantee for 4K60. OBS system requirements · OBS hardware encoding
Test the exact playlist before relying on it unattended
- Build the real broadcast setup. Use the intended source files, playlist method, OBS scene, overlays, filters, transitions, audio, and output resolution. More sources and effects can change the workload.
- Match YouTube’s ingest settings. Choose the codec and bitrate for the stream, use CBR, set a two-second keyframe interval, and configure 60 fps. Ensure the Mac’s sustained upload can support the selected bitrate with headroom.
- Keep the Mac awake and the network stable. Check macOS power and sleep behavior, prevent interruptions during the planned broadcast, and consider wired Ethernet if available. A particular connection is not guaranteed to be sufficient simply because it is wired.
- Run a representative endurance test. Test for at least the duration and under the conditions you expect to use. Include moving video and audio like the real playlist; YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and video motion.
- Monitor the test. Watch YouTube’s stream-health status and messages, and check OBS for dropped frames, encoder overload, source failures, or playlist interruptions. Confirm what happens after a network interruption or encoder failure, including whether the stream resumes as intended.
- Only then decide whether it is safe to leave unattended. Recheck after changes to macOS, OBS, sources, scenes, or network conditions; an earlier successful run does not certify a changed setup.

Common problems and what to check
- Stream health reports instability or dropped frames: Check sustained upload against the recommended bitrate for the selected codec, reduce competing network traffic, and test again. A speed test alone may not reflect sustained performance.
- OBS reports rendering or encoding strain: Reduce scene complexity, filters, or concurrent work, then repeat the test. OBS notes that resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity all affect demand; there is no published M2-specific threshold to apply universally.
- The picture stutters even though the stream is connected: Check whether the source files decode smoothly, the playlist transitions correctly, and the system is doing other heavy work. Test the actual media and scene rather than relying on the Mac’s display specification.
- The stream stops after the Mac is left alone: Review sleep and power settings, network interruptions, and OBS or source-player behavior. Verify recovery during the test instead of assuming a restart will happen automatically.
- Viewers cannot select 4K: Confirm the stream is actually being sent and processed at the intended resolution and frame rate, then check YouTube’s live status and playback options. A 4K60 display connected to the Mac does not establish the stream’s output quality.
Copyright and YouTube policy still apply to playlists
Having a video file or assembling a playlist does not by itself establish permission to broadcast its contents. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, including music and other embedded media, and check YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules before scheduling a long-running channel. A technically stable loop can still face claims, restrictions, or removal if the content or its use violates rights or platform policies.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping a Mac mini running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts. Learn about StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
