How to Set GOP and Keyframes for a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Video Loop

For 4K60 YouTube Live, use a 2-second keyframe interval, equivalent to 120 frames at exactly 60fps. Set a closed GOP and choose a sustainable codec-specific bitrate.

For a 4K 60fps YouTube Live stream, set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. If your encoder asks for GOP length in frames, use 120 frames at exactly 60fps. Use a closed GOP, and do not let the interval exceed 4 seconds (240 frames at 60fps).

Recommended 4K60 settings at a glance

Setting Recommended value Notes
Output resolution and frame rate 3840 × 2160 at 60fps Use this only if the source and encoder can produce it.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
GOP length at exactly 60fps 120 frames 60 frames per second × 2 seconds. The 4-second ceiling is 240 frames.
GOP type Closed GOP YouTube’s API flags open GOP as unsupported; closed GOP is required for HLS ingest.
Video bitrate, H.264 14 Mbps minimum; 50 Mbps recommended YouTube’s listed figures for 2160p at 60fps.
Video bitrate, AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps minimum; 35 Mbps recommended YouTube’s listed figures for 2160p at 60fps.

Bitrate recommendations are not a guarantee that your encoder or upload connection can sustain the stream. Choose a rate both can maintain reliably and test before going live.

Set the GOP and keyframe interval

  1. Set the output format. In your encoder, choose 3840 × 2160 (2160p) and 60fps if your source and hardware or software support them.
  2. Set keyframe frequency to 2 seconds. If the field is in frames and the output is exactly 60fps, enter 120. If the encoder accepts a time interval, use seconds; it avoids frame-count ambiguity with non-integer frame rates or unusual timebases.
  3. Choose closed GOP. Turn off open GOP. YouTube’s API identifies open GOP as unsupported, and the separate HLS ingest guide requires closed GOP.
  4. Choose a codec and a sustainable bitrate. For 2160p60, YouTube lists 50 Mbps recommended and 14 Mbps minimum for H.264, or 35 Mbps recommended and 10 Mbps minimum for AV1 or H.265/HEVC.
  5. For RTMP/RTMPS, use the compatible encoder settings. YouTube recommends CBR, progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, and one reference frame. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1.
  6. Test and inspect stream health. Test with representative motion and audio, including the video loop point, then check YouTube’s stream health messages. A backup stream should use the same keyframe frequency as the primary stream.

The 120- and 240-frame values are conversions from YouTube’s time-based guidance at a fixed 60fps, not separately published frame-count settings. Encoder interfaces vary, so use the time interval where possible and verify the reported keyframe frequency in stream health.

Choose bitrate and codec for the stream

H.264

For 2160p60 over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists 14 Mbps as the minimum and 50 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate. If your connection cannot hold the recommended rate steadily, test a lower rate rather than risking unstable delivery.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

AV1 or H.265/HEVC

For 2160p60, YouTube lists 10 Mbps minimum and 35 Mbps recommended for AV1 and H.265/HEVC. Confirm that your encoder and chosen ingest route support the codec before selecting it. The two-second keyframe recommendation does not change with codec.

SDR and HDR are different configurations

YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit for SDR. For HDR it recommends H.265/HEVC and 10-bit, and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. For AV1 at 3840 × 2160 and above, YouTube specifies at least two tile columns. Do not apply HDR settings to an SDR stream or assume that every encoder exposes these controls in the same way.

Keep RTMP/RTMPS and HLS requirements separate

The general YouTube encoder-settings table covers RTMP/RTMPS. HLS is a distinct ingest route with its own requirements: muxed M2TS audio/video, H.264 or HEVC video, single-track AAC audio, frame rates up to 60fps, and closed GOP. For HLS, YouTube recommends media segments of 1–4 seconds and caps segment length at 5 seconds. These M2TS, AAC, and segment requirements are not RTMP/RTMPS settings.

YouTube also supports DASH as an ingestion type in its API documentation, but the settings above do not establish a separate DASH configuration. Check the instructions for the specific encoder and ingest route you use rather than transferring RTMP/RTMPS or HLS requirements to it.

Test a looping video before going live

  1. Run a test with the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio, and ingest route planned for the live stream.
  2. Include motion and audio representative of the actual video. Let the loop transition occur during the test so you can check the complete playback path.
  3. Check YouTube stream health and read any encoder or ingest messages. YouTube recommends testing before the event and monitoring health during the stream.
  4. If you use a backup stream, confirm that it has the same keyframe frequency as the primary stream.

Troubleshoot GOP and keyframe warnings

Symptom or diagnostic What to check Fix
gopSizeLong or a message that keyframes are too far apart Keyframe interval or GOP length Set the interval to 2 seconds; at exactly 60fps, use 120 frames. Keep it at or below 4 seconds (240 frames).
openGop Whether the encoder is using open GOP Switch to closed GOP.
gopMismatch Keyframe frequency on primary and backup streams Make the backup frequency match the primary.
Unstable stream or bitrate warnings Whether encoder output and upload can sustain the selected bitrate Test the connection and stream with representative content; select a bitrate the setup can reliably maintain.

YouTube notes that ingestion errors can produce incorrect GOP-size diagnostics. Treat a warning alongside the encoder’s actual output and observed stream behavior rather than relying on one diagnostic alone.
