How to Calculate Upload Bandwidth for a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Loop

Plan about 44 Mbps sustained upload for AV1/H.265 or 63 Mbps for H.264 at 4K/60, before other upload traffic. Learn the calculation, encoder settings, testing steps, and how to estimate long-loop data use.

For a 4K/60 YouTube Live loop, plan on about 44 Mbps of sustained upload capacity with AV1 or H.265/HEVC, or 63 Mbps with H.264, before accounting for other upload traffic. Those targets apply YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom to its recommended video ingest bitrates; they are planning figures, not guarantees of a stable stream.

Calculate the upload speed your 4K/60 stream needs

Use YouTube’s live-ingestion bitrate recommendation for the codec your encoder will send, add any other simultaneous upload traffic, then divide by 0.8 to leave 20% of upload capacity unused as headroom.

  1. Choose the codec and bitrate. YouTube recommends 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC at 4K/2160p and 60 fps, and 50 Mbps for H.264. These are video ingest bitrates, not internet speed-test targets. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table.
  2. Add competing uploads. Include other outbound traffic using the same connection, such as cloud backups or another stream. If it varies, use a realistic busy-period estimate rather than assuming the stream gets the full line.
  3. Divide the total by 0.8. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth available as room. This is equivalent to multiplying total demand by 1.25.
  4. Compare with measured upload speed. Use upload, not download, speed. The connection’s available capacity can be lower than its advertised or speed-test result when other devices and users are active.
Codec at 4K/2160p, 60 fps YouTube minimum ingest bitrate YouTube recommended ingest bitrate Upload-capacity target with 20% headroom*
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps About 44 Mbps
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps About 63 Mbps

*Calculated from the recommended bitrate alone: 35 ÷ 0.8 = 43.75 Mbps, rounded to 44 Mbps; 50 ÷ 0.8 = 62.5 Mbps, rounded to 63 Mbps. Add other simultaneous upload traffic before dividing. The minimum ingest bitrate is not the recommended upload-capacity target for reliable streaming.

Why upload bitrate and upload speed are different

The encoder sends the live stream at a chosen bitrate; the internet connection needs enough sustained outbound capacity to carry that traffic with room for variation and competing use. A nominal 50 Mbps upload service therefore does not provide a safe 50 Mbps stream budget if other devices upload data or the connection fluctuates. YouTube notes that upload bandwidth is often lower than download bandwidth and that shared connections can limit the capacity available to a streamer. Its guidance is to keep total stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth and leave 20% room (encoder settings; streaming tips).

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set the encoder for YouTube’s 4K/60 ingest

Use the live-stream settings below as the starting point, then check the encoder’s and YouTube’s status during a representative test. The exact menu names differ between encoder software, so set the values in the equivalent output or streaming controls.

  • Resolution and frame rate: 3840 × 2160 (2160p/4K), 60 fps.
  • Codec and bitrate: choose one supported codec and use its corresponding recommended bitrate: 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, 50 Mbps for H.264.
  • Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Keyframes: every 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS among its encoder options.
  • HDR: for HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube recommends H.265; AV1 is not supported for HDR.
  • Latency: YouTube’s documented 4K/2160p setting does not offer low latency; 4K streams are set to normal latency.

Follow the codec-specific values in YouTube’s current live encoder table. Do not substitute values from guidance for uploading a prerecorded video: that is a different workflow from live ingestion.

Test the connection before relying on a continuous loop

  1. Run an upload speed test on the same connection and, if possible, at a time when household, office, or other network use is representative of stream conditions.
  2. Start a test stream using the intended 4K/60 resolution, codec, bitrate, audio, and content. Include movement representative of the actual video; a still screen may not reflect the planned encoder workload or stream behavior.
  3. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and encoder status for dropped frames, interruptions, or bitrate problems. YouTube recommends testing the setup and using a reliable network (streaming tips; encoder settings).
  4. Recheck after changing the encoder, network, or competing upload activity. A speed-test result is a snapshot; YouTube does not specify a test duration that guarantees the same capacity throughout a long-running loop.

A wired Ethernet connection can be a practical option if Wi-Fi is unreliable, but a cable cannot increase the upload capacity provided by your internet plan. It is not necessary if the existing connection is stable.

Estimate data use for a long-running loop

A continuous loop does not need a higher bitrate just because it runs longer; it needs the required upload capacity to remain available for the duration. Longer runtime does increase total data sent. As a rough decimal conversion, estimate Mbps × hours × 0.45 = GB. This is a unit-conversion estimate, not a measured YouTube usage figure; overhead and operating conditions can change actual data use.

Troubleshoot bandwidth and stream-health problems

  • Stream health reports insufficient bandwidth or the stream buffers: compare the configured bitrate with the sustained upload capacity available at that time. Check for other uploads, then reduce competing traffic or lower the stream bitrate while remaining within YouTube’s guidance for the chosen resolution and codec.
  • Speed test looks adequate, but the live stream still struggles: the test may not reflect busy-period sharing or fluctuations. Repeat the test during representative use, inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages, and test the stream itself rather than relying on a single speed result.
  • Only the H.264 configuration fails the capacity check: its recommended 4K/60 ingest bitrate is 50 Mbps, so the calculated target is about 63 Mbps before other uploads. If the encoder and workflow support it, compare AV1 or H.265 at the recommended 35 Mbps and assess compatibility, including HDR requirements.
  • Connection interruptions break the stream: YouTube notes that a network interruption can break a stream. Check the connection’s reliability and shared use; a one-time speed test cannot guarantee uninterrupted service for a 24/7 run.
