You can build a 24/7 YouTube study stream from videos stored in Google Drive, but Drive is the media source—not a YouTube encoder or a ready-made streaming playlist. The practical setup is to make authorized videos available to a playlist or automation layer, send that feed through an encoder to YouTube Live, and plan for interruptions and stream lifecycle limits. YouTube activation can take up to 24 hours the first time, so enable livestreaming before you need the channel to run.
How the Drive-to-YouTube setup works
The path has four parts: a livestream-enabled YouTube channel, accessible video files, software or hardware that sequences and encodes those files, and an internet connection that can sustain the encoded feed. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key; the encoder sends the video to YouTube, where viewers watch the live broadcast.
A Google Drive folder is not automatically understood as a playlist by every encoder. For a straightforward setup, download or sync permitted files to storage the playlist software can read. If you choose an application with a Drive connector, verify its file-format support, permissions, and unattended authorization independently. YouTube does not document a built-in Drive-folder playlist feature.
1. Prepare the YouTube channel and broadcast

Verify the channel and check that it has no livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Enable livestreaming ahead of time; YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.

In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and obtain its server URL and stream key using the encoder setup workflow. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or put it in files or screenshots that others can access.

Configure the encoder in advance, start it, and wait for the preview in Live Control Room before going live. Test the setup and monitor stream health while it runs; YouTube’s live streaming guidance recommends testing and monitoring.
2. Make Drive videos available to the playlist
For an unattended stream, the encoder and playlist layer need files they can reliably read even if Drive access changes or the connection to Drive is interrupted. A local cache or synchronized folder is one practical approach; it separates playback from repeated retrieval during the broadcast.

Manual download or Drive sync
Download or synchronize only videos you are allowed to access and rebroadcast. Confirm that the files are complete and playable from the machine or storage used by the playlist. Decide how newly added, removed, or renamed Drive files should affect the playlist; do not assume every sync tool or encoder will update its queue automatically.
API-mediated downloads
For binary video files, the Drive API supports retrieving content with files.get and alt=media. The account or application needs content-read access, the necessary OAuth scope, and permission to download each file. Before retrieval, Google says to check the file’s capabilities.canDownload field. Metadata-only scopes are not enough to download media. An unattended process also needs an authorization arrangement that remains valid and lawful. Handle revoked access, failed downloads, and missing files deliberately—for example, by alerting an operator and continuing only with files already confirmed as available. The Drive API provides a retrieval route; it does not itself create or transmit the YouTube playlist.

3. Build and encode the continuous feed
Choose a playlist or automation layer that can sequence the local videos, loop or schedule them, and recover after a restart. Pair it with an encoder that can play or receive that feed and send it to YouTube’s ingestion endpoint. Before relying on any particular application, check the version and platform you will run: folder monitoring, ordering, looping, handling damaged files, and restart recovery vary by implementation.
For a study stream, a simple low-motion visual loop can be appropriate, but do not represent prerecorded material as a live event in a way that misleads viewers. Confirm that you have permission to publicly rebroadcast every video, audio track, image, and other study resource. A copy being stored in Drive does not establish rebroadcast rights, and a public stream may disclose material that was private in Drive.

Use YouTube’s encoder settings guide for the current supported options. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, calls for constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the feed between the encoder and YouTube.

These are encoder-ingestion settings, not a promise that viewers will receive that bitrate; YouTube transcodes streams for playback. Pick a resolution and bitrate your upload connection can sustain, then test with the actual video and audio you intend to use. Speed-test the available upload capacity, check the preview and stream health, and reduce the output settings if the connection cannot hold them steadily.

A 24/7 result depends on the whole chain staying operational: files remain readable, the playlist process keeps advancing, the encoder stays alive, and local power and network capacity hold up. Plan monitoring, a restart or failover approach, and recovery if Drive authorization is revoked or YouTube drops the stream. Validate any watchdog or automated restart behavior with your chosen encoder and platform rather than assuming it exists.

YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous-channel plan therefore needs to account for broadcast lifecycle and archive handling; do not assume a single live broadcast or archive can hold an indefinite run. The YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes the relationship between a broadcast and its stream, including a continuing 24/7 broadcast scenario, but it does not establish that one broadcast can remain live forever without interruption or provide a universal restart recipe.
Choosing the pieces for your setup
- Media retrieval: Decide between manual download, Drive synchronization, or API-mediated download. Check file permissions, download restrictions, authorization durability, and how updates reach the local playlist.
- Playlist automation: Verify deterministic ordering, looping, folder-update behavior, support for your file formats, and what happens when a file is missing or corrupt.
- Encoding: Check codec support, CBR control, bitrate settings, and whether your computer or hardware can run the encoder unattended.
- Continuity: Consider local file caching, power and network resilience, process monitoring, backup or restart procedures, and YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle.
- Archives: Decide whether you need recordings of individual sessions and how you will manage them around YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic-archive guidance.
- Rights and privacy: Confirm public rebroadcast permission for all included material and review whether a public stream exposes anything that was private in Drive.
