Short answer: neither Contabo nor DigitalOcean can be named the more reliable choice for a 24/7 YouTube stream from the available provider documentation. DigitalOcean has a CPU-Optimized Droplet family explicitly marketed for video and live streaming, with published transfer allowances and overage pricing. Contabo publishes a broad VPS/VDS port-speed range and says its traffic is subject to fair use. To choose, calculate your stream’s monthly outbound data, decide whether the VPS must encode video or only send an already encoded feed, and verify the exact plan’s sustained resources and network terms.

What matters more than the headline VPS price

A continuous YouTube stream puts two distinct demands on a VPS: compute and outbound network capacity. Compute depends heavily on whether the server is encoding or transcoding video, or merely forwarding an already encoded feed. Network use depends mainly on the stream’s bitrate and the number of hours it runs. A plan’s advertised CPU count, port speed, or transfer allowance alone does not establish stable 24/7 streaming performance.

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends setting the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in the encoder, testing upload bitrate, and using RTMPS. Its settings are ingest recommendations, not guarantees from either VPS provider. YouTube states: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” See YouTube’s encoder settings and live encoder guidance.

Contabo vs DigitalOcean at a glance

Factor Contabo DigitalOcean
Relevant compute offering The cited Contabo information does not establish a specific plan’s sustained CPU allocation for video encoding. CPU-Optimized Droplets use dedicated vCPUs and are identified for CPU-bound workloads including video and live streaming. DigitalOcean’s Droplet guidance
Transfer and traffic terms Contabo says there is no default bandwidth limit on VPS, VDS, and dedicated servers, subject to its fair-use policy. Droplet plans include plan-specific outbound transfer; additional outbound transfer is $0.01/GiB. Team transfer is pooled, inbound is free, and unused accrued transfer does not roll over. DigitalOcean transfer documentation
Published network figure Contabo documents VPS/VDS port speeds from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps. This is a product-family range, not a guarantee of sustained speed for a particular VPS. The cited DigitalOcean pricing information establishes plan-specific transfer allowances, not an end-to-end throughput benchmark.
Example price and allowance A comparable Contabo plan price was not established in the available provider information. DigitalOcean’s pricing page lists a 2-vCPU, 4-GiB CPU-Optimized Droplet at $42/month with 4,000 GiB transfer. This is a published list price, not a guaranteed checkout quote or performance result. How much outbound transfer will a 24/7 stream use?

Use the encoder’s actual configured bitrate, not just its resolution, to estimate data. At a constant bitrate, a useful approximation is:

GiB per 30-day month ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 324

This approximation assumes a continuous stream and decimal megabits per second converted to binary gibibytes; actual usage varies with bitrate fluctuations, audio, protocol overhead, reconnects, and other outbound traffic. For example, a constant 5 Mbps stream uses roughly 1,620 GiB over 30 days before those additional factors. A 17 Mbps stream uses roughly 5,508 GiB on the same basis.

YouTube’s recommended H.264 settings illustrate why codec and frame rate matter: it recommends 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. Its table gives 12 Mbps for 1080p60 using AV1 or H.265. Consult YouTube’s current settings table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as universal.

What the estimate means for each provider

  • DigitalOcean: compare the estimate with the exact Droplet’s included outbound transfer and the team’s shared pool. The published excess-transfer rate is $0.01/GiB; other Droplets in the team can use part of the pool. Inbound traffic is free, and accrued transfer does not roll over. Confirm current terms before budgeting.
  • Contabo: its statement that there is no default bandwidth limit is qualified by fair use. Contabo reserves discretion under that policy to throttle exceptionally high or disruptive usage. Its 100 Mbps–1 Gbps VPS/VDS port range should not be read as a promise that an individual plan will sustain a chosen stream rate continuously. See Contabo’s support information.

When DigitalOcean may fit better

DigitalOcean is the clearer documented starting point if the VPS must do sustained CPU-heavy encoding: its CPU-Optimized family is described for video and live streaming workloads. Its plan-specific transfer allowance and excess-transfer rate also make one part of monthly cost easier to estimate. The example 2-vCPU, 4-GiB plan is not a recommendation for every stream; the cited sources do not establish which configuration can encode a particular codec and resolution without dropped frames.

Check the actual plan catalog and checkout terms for the region and configuration you intend to use. The $42/month example and its 4,000 GiB allowance are published list values, not a benchmark or a promise of final charges.

When Contabo may fit better

Contabo may warrant consideration if its current plan configuration and fair-use terms match your expected traffic and budget. Its support documentation describes VPS/VDS port speeds ranging from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps and no default bandwidth limit, while expressly retaining fair-use conditions. That information does not show the sustained throughput, stream stability, or total price of a specific plan for your workload.

Before committing, verify the exact plan’s CPU allocation, traffic policy, throttling conditions, region, and any costs applicable to your use. Do not treat “no default bandwidth limit” as unlimited guaranteed throughput.

Choose by workload, then validate the setup

  1. Decide whether the VPS encodes. If it converts or encodes video continuously, CPU demand is materially different from simply forwarding a pre-encoded feed. Match the plan to the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, and encoding settings; neither provider comparison here establishes a benchmark for those workloads.
  2. Set the YouTube ingest target. Choose the codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate using YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. YouTube’s setup guidance says to configure the encoder with the server URL and stream key; use RTMPS where supported.
  3. Estimate monthly transfer. Multiply the configured Mbps by about 324 for a rough 30-day GiB estimate, then allow room for audio, overhead, bitrate variation, reconnects, and other services. For DigitalOcean, account for the shared team pool and current plan allowance. For Contabo, review the fair-use terms alongside the plan’s port information.
  4. Check the whole plan, not a single spec. Confirm sustained CPU allocation, expected outbound traffic, throughput terms, region and route suitability, price at checkout, and support or recovery options. The cited material does not establish a regional latency winner or comparative support quality.
  5. Test a representative stream and monitor it. Validate the selected configuration over a sustained run, watch YouTube’s stream health and encoder output, and arrange monitoring and restart/reconnect recovery. Documentation figures do not substitute for a test with your own workload.

Reliability and YouTube policy are separate questions

A VPS provider’s bandwidth and CPU descriptions do not prove that a YouTube stream will stay live. No head-to-head uptime, dropped-frame, or sustained encoding test is established for these providers. Reliability depends on the complete setup—including the encoder or forwarding process, network path, monitoring, and recovery behavior—so avoid choosing a provider on unsupported claims of superior uptime.

Separately, YouTube’s live-stream settings do not grant rights to the content being broadcast. Make sure you have the necessary rights to video, music, and other material, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies, including rules for reused content. A technically stable stream can still be interrupted or restricted for policy reasons. Use the copyright safety checklist as a practical pre-stream check.
