Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can use a Mac mini as the encoder computer for a continuous YouTube Live broadcast of prepared ocean audio and visuals: create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, enter its server URL and stream key in an encoder such as OBS, then preview and monitor the stream. The important limitation is that YouTube may not save a broadcast longer than 12 hours, so plan separate local recordings if you need an archive. YouTube’s guidance does not validate a particular Mac mini model or guarantee a hands-off 24/7 setup.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restriction from the past 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A Mac mini connected to the internet, an encoder such as OBS, and prepared audio and visual material. The exact Mac mini model, macOS version, OBS build and power settings are not specified here; no particular configuration is guaranteed to run unattended.
- An ocean recording and any accompanying visual that you have the right to use in a livestream and, if relevant, in monetized broadcasts and replays.
YouTube supports encoder streaming. Its encoder instructions describe copying the server URL and stream key from the Live Control Room into the encoder. YouTube also lists OBS as an encoder that can use HLS ingestion. The precise OBS steps for constructing a looping ocean-sound scene depend on your files and OBS version; verify that your selected sources actually loop and remain active before broadcasting.
Set up and launch the stream
- Enable live streaming early. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and follow the prompts to set up live streaming if you have not used it before. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement. Check that the channel meets YouTube’s eligibility conditions before scheduling a launch.
- Create or manage an encoder stream. In the Live Control Room, create a stream or open the one you plan to use. Copy its server URL and stream key into the matching fields in your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it could send a feed to your stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Prepare the feed in your encoder. Add the ocean audio and visual you intend to broadcast, and configure playback to repeat if the stream is meant to be continuous. Check the full signal path—especially that audio is audible, the image is present, and the media does not stop at the end of its first play. Do not assume YouTube or the Mac mini will automatically restart your encoder after a power or network interruption.
- Choose a sustainable resolution and bitrate. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not a measurement of your upload connection. Run a speed test, leave capacity for normal network variation, and choose a setting your connection can sustain. If the visual is static, 720p may be a reasonable bandwidth tradeoff; whether it looks sufficient depends on the source image and the result you want. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for current recommendations.
- Select an ingestion protocol that your encoder supports. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. HLS is another option supported by OBS for YouTube ingestion; HLS has higher latency because it delivers video in segments, and YouTube identifies it for workflows such as HDR or codecs not supported through RTMP. For a non-interactive ambient broadcast, the extra latency may not matter, but select HLS only if your setup calls for it. If using HLS, choose the HLS protocol in the Live Control Room and follow the HLS-specific requirements.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start sending the feed, then use the Live Control Room preview to confirm the correct picture and sound arrive before you go live. YouTube recommends checking stream health and messages during the event. Also verify that the event is accessible from your channel and watch pages and on a mobile device.
- Monitor the Mac mini and the broadcast. Check the encoder, YouTube’s stream-health messages, audio and video quality, and your internet connection during the broadcast. YouTube’s operational checks help identify problems; they are not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 service. A UPS may help with brief power interruptions, but no particular hardware is required or validated by YouTube’s guidance.
Plan for the 12-hour archive limit
A continuous 24/7 stream is longer than YouTube’s reliable automatic-archive window. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams over 12 hours. If a replay matters, record locally and plan how you will segment, store and verify the files; YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance and DVR guidance.
A local recording creates its own operational work: confirm that recording is active and that the destination has room, and check that the file is growing. For a day-long broadcast, decide in advance how you will preserve and inspect recordings rather than relying on the YouTube replay to be complete.

Make sure you have rights to the ocean audio
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies copyrighted material, it may replace the live video with a placeholder and warn you to stop using that material; if it continues, the broadcast can be interrupted or terminated. A copyright strike can also end a stream. These rules apply to ambient recordings as well as music.
If you licensed a third-party recording, YouTube says to ask the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted. Before going live, confirm that your rights cover livestreaming, the territories in which you expect viewers, monetization if applicable, and any archive or recording you keep. The recording’s source, license and Content ID status must be checked for the specific audio you plan to use. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
