Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Yes—you can run a process on a Contabo VPS that sends a continuous stream to YouTube Live. Whether a particular VPS can reliably relay or encode your stream depends on the workload and the configuration you test; published vCPU, memory, and port-speed figures are not performance guarantees. This guide explains how to choose a VPS, configure YouTube’s encoder settings, test the stream, and plan for failures.
What a Contabo VPS can—and cannot—tell you
A VPS is a rented server that can stay online and run streaming software without keeping your home computer on. Contabo’s documentation describes three VPS families: Core, Performance, and Storage. Core uses shared vCPU cores and SSD storage; Performance uses shared vCPU cores on newer AMD EPYC generations with NVMe storage; Storage VPS emphasizes capacity. Network port speeds vary by plan. Check the exact model, region, and current specifications before buying, because Contabo says specifications may change.
For example, Contabo’s published Core configurations include Cloud VPS 4 with 4 vCPUs, 8 GB RAM, 100 GB SSD, and a 200 Mbit/s port, and Cloud VPS 18 with 18 vCPUs, 96 GB RAM, 600 GB SSD, and a 1,000 Mbit/s port. Those are provider-listed configurations, not independent benchmarks or proof that an encoder can continuously use every resource shown. See Contabo’s VPS plans and current configurations for the options available at purchase.
Choose based on what the VPS must do
Relaying an already encoded stream
If a source elsewhere already encodes the video and the VPS only forwards it, the main continuous network load is the outgoing stream bitrate, plus protocol overhead and any other server traffic. You still need to verify that your chosen software and configuration can relay reliably; the published plan figures alone do not establish that.

Encoding or transcoding on the VPS
Encoding or converting video adds compute demand. The available Contabo information does not identify a plan guaranteed to handle a particular resolution, frame rate, codec, or number of concurrent streams. Choose a configuration according to your actual workload, then test it under representative conditions and monitor CPU and memory use.
Compare the plan details that matter
Compare the exact model’s vCPU, RAM, storage type and capacity, and listed network port. Core and Performance may be worth comparing when you need general-purpose resources; Storage VPS is capacity-oriented and is not automatically a better choice just because a stream runs continuously. Check the current price for your region, billing term, and applicable taxes at checkout rather than relying on an evergreen price: Contabo pricing.

Check YouTube’s current encoder requirements
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends CBR encoding and a keyframe frequency of 2 seconds, not over 4 seconds, and recommends RTMPS. YouTube says: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Consult YouTube Help’s encoder settings and live-streaming guidance for the current bitrate table and requirements for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec.
Bitrate is not one-size-fits-all. For instance, YouTube’s cited table lists 720p at 30 fps with a 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps maximum video bitrate. That example does not establish the right setting for other resolutions or frame rates. Select a value from YouTube’s current table for the stream you intend to send, and leave network headroom for overhead and other server traffic.

Set up a VPS stream to YouTube
- Select a configuration: Decide whether the VPS will relay an already encoded feed or encode/transcode video itself. Compare the exact plan’s resources and port speed; do not treat any listed configuration as a guaranteed capacity for your workload.
- Install and secure your server: Install the streaming software you choose, configure secure access to the VPS, and set up the software to read or receive your video source. The appropriate package and compatibility depend on your workflow; no single software setup is established here.
- Create or select the YouTube live stream: In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and obtain its stream key and server address. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or include it in public commands, screenshots, or logs. Use YouTube’s current instructions for the Studio interface and stream details.
- Configure the encoder or relay: Enter the YouTube server address and stream key in your software. Use RTMPS where supported, select the intended resolution and frame rate, choose a bitrate from YouTube’s current table, set CBR, and configure keyframes every 2 seconds (never over 4 seconds, per YouTube guidance). Confirm that the software’s selected codec is supported by YouTube.
- Run a representative test: Test with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. Check both the YouTube stream-health messages and VPS CPU, memory, and network use. A static test image or brief low-load test may not reveal issues that appear during normal content or sustained operation.
- Plan for unattended operation: Arrange for the process to restart after failure and set up a way to notice interruptions. These are operational measures you must configure; the provider specifications cited here do not establish a Contabo-specific automatic restart or alerting feature.
Bandwidth, fair use, and multiple streams
Contabo’s support guidance says VPS and VDS servers have no default bandwidth limit, but fair-use rules apply. It reserves the right to throttle exceptionally high or disruptive usage and says affected customers will be notified. The same guidance reports port speeds ranging by product from 100 Mbit/s to 1 Gbit/s. Therefore, “no default bandwidth limit” is not a guarantee against throttling or a reason to ignore traffic policy. Review Contabo’s bandwidth-limit guidance.
For multiple simultaneous streams, account for each stream’s outgoing bitrate, overhead, and any other server traffic, then test the combined workload. There is no provider-published capacity figure here that establishes how many concurrent 24/7 streams a given plan can run; a port-speed number alone cannot answer that question.

Troubleshooting a VPS livestream
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the stream key and server address match the live event, that the key has not been exposed or replaced, and that the software is using a YouTube-supported protocol and codec.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Compare the actual bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current guidance. Reduce the workload or bitrate if your tested server or network cannot sustain the selected settings.
- The stream starts but later drops: Check the streaming process, VPS resource use, network use, and YouTube’s stream-health messages around the interruption. Configure process recovery and alerting rather than assuming a VPS will restart the streaming application automatically.
- Performance degrades during encoding: Determine whether CPU or memory use rises under the real video workload. Encoding and transcoding require more compute than relaying an already encoded feed; a plan’s published specifications do not prove that it can sustain your specific settings.
- Traffic is unusually high or disruptive: Review Contabo’s fair-use guidance and watch for provider notifications. Its no-default-limit statement does not eliminate fair-use conditions.
