You can run the encoder on a computer you maintain, or use a cloud playout service so playback does not depend on a computer staying on at the property. YouTube Live is a broadcast workflow—not the same as uploading a regular video.
Choose where the stream will run
The key decision is whether you want to maintain the broadcast on your own computer or have a cloud service play the uploaded tour videos. Either way, the encoder sends the video feed to YouTube Live. YouTube describes an encoder as software or standalone hardware; dedicated hardware is an option, not a requirement for looping existing videos. YouTube also lists Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams, but that listing is not an endorsement of every provider. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Prepare the channel, videos, and permissions
Check live-stream eligibility
YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. First-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it before the day you want the tour to run. Check rights for every element
Confirm you have permission to show the property footage and any identifiable people, narration, graphics, music, or third-party clips. YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content; a match can replace the live feed with a placeholder or interrupt or terminate the stream. A license alone may not prevent interruption: in some cases, the rights holder also needs to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Review YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams. YouTube’s general copyright guidance does not settle property-owner, occupant, or jurisdiction-specific release requirements; confirm those with the property owner and relevant professionals.

Prepare a reliable loop
Use video files you are authorized to stream and make sure the playlist order and repeat behavior are intentional. Check the source resolution and audio before going live. If the broadcast must be retained, plan to record a local copy instead of relying on YouTube to archive a long stream.
Set up and start the YouTube Live feed
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream. Choose an appropriate title, visibility, and start time for the open-house tour.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup page provides these connection details. Treat the stream key like a password: YouTube uses it to identify the destination and accept the encoder’s feed. Do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the stream.
- Configure playback. Select the tour video or playlist and enable looping if you want the same material to repeat. Exact controls differ by encoder, so verify that the playlist continues rather than stopping after one pass.
- Set a stable output. Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds between keyframes. Match resolution and bitrate to the upload connection’s dependable capacity using YouTube’s published recommendations: YouTube Help: Recommended encoder settings.
- Preview before making the broadcast public. Check the picture, audio, stream health, and playlist behavior. Test with movement and sound similar to the actual tour, and watch the stream health indicator before and after going live.
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. With a local encoder, leave the computer and network available for the whole broadcast. With a cloud service, confirm that the feed is active in YouTube and that the provider has the correct source files and stream key.
Plan for replays and viewer controls
YouTube can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours; streams that exceed 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the replay is important, keep your own recording. YouTube also warns that DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek to a point before the broadcast began. Troubleshoot common problems
- Live streaming is not available: verify the channel, check for a live-streaming restriction within the past 90 days, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- YouTube receives no feed: check that the encoder is running and that the stream URL and key were copied correctly. If you replace or reset a key in YouTube Studio, update the encoder too.
- The feed stutters or loses quality: check the upload connection and encoder stream health. Reduce output resolution or bitrate to a level the connection can sustain, and use constant bitrate encoding.
- The image or audio is interrupted for a rights notice: review the footage and every audio or visual element for third-party material. Confirm that permissions cover live streaming; if content is licensed, ask whether the rights holder must allowlist the channel through Content ID.
- The replay is missing or viewers cannot rewind far: check the broadcast duration. Streams over 12 hours may not be archived, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Keep a local recording when retention matters.
- A local loop stops unexpectedly: check whether the computer slept, the encoder process closed, or the network dropped. Keep the system awake and monitor the broadcast, or use cloud playback if you do not want the stream dependent on a computer at home.
