You can use Liquidsoap to schedule jazz recordings, pair the audio with a visual, encode the result as video, and send it to YouTube Live. For a 24/7 channel, that is only the streaming pipeline: you must also provide a reliable host and internet connection, protect the stream key, monitor the broadcast, plan recovery, and secure rights to every recording.
How the Liquidsoap-to-YouTube setup works
Liquidsoap can schedule playlist-based internet radio, but a conventional radio stream and a YouTube Live broadcast are different outputs. An Icecast stream can serve audio to radio players; YouTube Live expects an audiovisual stream delivered by an encoder. In this setup, Liquidsoap selects and shapes the audio, a visual source is paired with it, FFmpeg encodes the combined output, and Liquidsoap sends it to YouTube’s ingest endpoint using the channel’s stream key.
You do not need an Icecast server for a YouTube-only channel. Add one only if you also want a separate conventional radio endpoint. The continuous playlist is the programming logic; it does not guarantee that the host, network, encoder, or YouTube connection will stay available.
Before you configure anything
Confirm YouTube Live access
Check the channel’s live-stream eligibility and enable livestreaming before your planned launch. YouTube’s Help guidance says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until the broadcast is due to start.

Clear the music rights
Use recordings you are authorized to broadcast on YouTube for the relevant channel and territories. YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can lead to an interruption or termination if it is not resolved. A license does not necessarily prevent an automated match: YouTube says licensed third-party content may need to be allowlisted through Content ID. Confirm the arrangement with the rights holder; there is no blanket assurance that a recording is safe simply because it is available to stream elsewhere.
Choose a Liquidsoap version and validate its syntax
Liquidsoap’s examples and references span different versions. Pin the version you install, confirm that its FFmpeg support is available, and check each operator against that version’s documentation before relying on a configuration in production. Treat examples using output.youtube.live.rtmp, source.mux.video, or a particular encoder argument as version-dependent rather than universal syntax.
Build the jazz program and visual
Prepare the playlist
- Put only cleared recordings in the program library and organize them into a playlist that suits the station’s intended sound.
- Configure Liquidsoap to read the playlist and continue selecting tracks as each item ends. Its playlist-based radio model can also accommodate rotation, jingles, and crossfades; decide whether those elements fit a continuous jazz station.
- Add fallback audio or a live input only if your programming needs it. A fallback prevents an empty source from silencing the output, but it does not solve a failed encoder, host, or network connection.
Pair audio with a visual source
YouTube needs video as well as audio. A static cover image is the simplest visual: Liquidsoap’s book demonstrates the concept with single("image.jpg") and source.mux.video. That is an illustration of the approach, not a copy-and-run configuration; validate the exact operators and media formats for your installed version. A visual loop or produced live visuals are alternatives, but they add production and, for video, encoding demands.

Check the actual preview before launch: the visual should be present and correctly framed, and the jazz audio should be audible without clipping, silence, or an unintended channel mix. If you use artwork or other visuals, make sure you have the rights to use them in the broadcast too.

Configure encoding and send the stream
Choose a tested output profile
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance recommends H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds. Its recommended H.264 video rates include:

Those figures are video recommendations for the listed resolution and frame rate, not a complete total bitrate: audio also uses bandwidth. Check YouTube’s live encoder table when you configure the encoder because its recommendations can change. Choose a resolution and frame rate that suit the visual production and the host’s capacity; a static image does not require elaborate motion to be useful.

Connect Liquidsoap to YouTube
- In YouTube’s live setup, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast.
- Configure Liquidsoap’s YouTube RTMP output with the ingest URL, the key, and the FFmpeg-backed video and audio encoder settings you selected. Liquidsoap’s documented YouTube output pattern includes an automatic-start option; confirm its exact name and behavior in the reference for your installed version.
- Start the Liquidsoap process and check YouTube’s incoming preview and stream-health indicators before making the broadcast public. Confirm both audio and video, not just that the encoder reports a connection.
- Keep the stream key out of public configuration files, screenshots, logs, and shared messages. Treat it like a password. If it is exposed, reset the compromised key in YouTube and update the encoder configuration.
The exact configuration file and FFmpeg arguments depend on the Liquidsoap version and how it was installed. Do not paste a snippet written for another release without checking its syntax and confirming the installed build has the required video and encoder support.
Size the connection and host for continuous operation
Allow upload headroom
YouTube recommends upload capacity 20% above the total stream bitrate; account for both primary and backup streams if you send them. For example, a stream whose combined audio and video bitrate is 5 Mbps needs at least 6 Mbps of sustained upload capacity under that recommendation. Measure the actual connection available to the streaming host, not just a plan’s advertised maximum, and leave room for normal fluctuations.
Account for video encoding and recovery
Video encoding uses more CPU than audio-only work in Liquidsoap’s FFmpeg guidance. Choose a host with capacity appropriate to the selected encoder settings and test it under the intended load; the available guidance does not establish a universal minimum CPU or hardware specification. Use service supervision or another restart plan for process failures, and decide how you will detect and recover from a host or network outage. A restart can restore a process, but it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast or replace monitoring.

A local machine gives you direct control but depends on that machine, its power, and its internet connection remaining available. A hosted server can keep the process away from a home computer, but it still needs sufficient CPU and bandwidth, plus a recovery and monitoring plan. Compare total recurring hosting and network costs against your operational requirements; there is no universally best host established for this use.

Before treating the stream as unattended, test the complete chain: playlist transitions, visual output, encoder load, YouTube preview, sustained upload, local recording, and recovery after a deliberate process restart. YouTube advises testing encoder output and continuously monitoring stream quality.

Plan recording and YouTube archives separately
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on YouTube for a complete recording of a longer continuous broadcast. If a complete record matters, configure a local recording and make sure the host has enough storage for the bitrate and retention period you need.

Test that local recording independently from the outbound stream and check that files remain usable after a long run. The right storage capacity depends on the encoded bitrate and how long you retain recordings; no particular drive type or capacity is prescribed here.
