Neither format is inherently better for building watch time. A 24/7 live stream can gather viewing while it is live and may continue to earn views as a public replay; a Premiere gives a new video a scheduled, shared launch and then leaves it available to watch on demand. The better fit depends on whether people actually watch your content, how they watch it, and whether the resulting views count toward the YouTube Partner Program’s qualified public watch hours.
Live streams and Premieres work differently
24/7 live streams are ongoing broadcasts
A live stream broadcasts video in real time, with viewers able to watch and chat while it is live. A channel may also make a replay or highlights available afterward. An always-on schedule is not itself watch time: viewers must watch for time to accrue.

Premieres turn a new upload into a shared event
A Premiere is a new video released at a scheduled time so creators and viewers can watch together. YouTube creates a public watch page in advance; viewers can share it, set a reminder, comment, and chat. The scheduled video appears across YouTube like a regular upload, and remains available as a video afterward. YouTube Help: Create a Premiere.

Which watch hours count toward YPP eligibility?
YouTube’s current Partner Program overview says qualified watch hours come from long-form videos set to public. It excludes watch time from private, unlisted, or deleted videos, ad campaigns, Shorts, and livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to video on demand (VOD). So if you want a finished live broadcast to remain available and count as eligible public long-form viewing, make sure the replay is public and converted to VOD. YouTube Partner Program overview.
The overview lists one eligibility route as 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months. This is an eligibility threshold, not evidence that a live stream or Premiere performs better. YouTube also describes a separate Shorts-based route; do not combine Shorts views with the long-form watch-hour threshold.

Total watch time shown in Analytics and qualified public watch hours for YPP eligibility are not interchangeable. YouTube says watch time from paid ad campaigns does not count toward YPP thresholds, while Watch Page monetization can cover long-form and live streaming videos. Choose the format that fits the content and audience
Use a 24/7 stream when ongoing live programming is the point
A continuous broadcast may suit programming that viewers value at different times, such as a recurring game-world ambience stream, a live community channel, or a schedule of ongoing segments. Its potential advantage is availability across time—not guaranteed viewing. Measure whether people join, how long they stay, and whether they return to a public replay.

Use a Premiere when a shared launch adds value
A Premiere is a better structural fit for a finished video whose release benefits from a common start time, advance reminders, and chat around the launch. After the event, viewers can still watch the video on demand. A time-limited shared launch does not mean the video’s viewing opportunity ends with the event.
Do not choose based on an assumed universal winner
YouTube’s published guidance defines these formats and the eligibility rules, but does not provide an apples-to-apples study showing that 24/7 streams generate more watch time than Premieres, or vice versa. The format label cannot predict audience demand. Compare similar content over comparable periods using the same Analytics measures, and distinguish live attendance from later replay or on-demand views.

How to compare your results fairly
- Set the objective. If the goal is YPP eligibility, focus on qualified public watch hours, not just total Analytics watch time.
- Keep the comparison consistent. Compare similar-length periods and content with a similar audience and promotion approach. Avoid treating a Premiere event’s attendance as equivalent to a full period of continuous availability.
- Check the relevant audience behavior. For streams, review live attendance and return viewing on the replay; for Premieres, review event attendance and later on-demand viewing.
- Verify eligibility conditions. Make sure the relevant long-form video is public. For a stream that ends, confirm its replay is not unlisted or deleted and is converted to VOD if it is intended to remain available.
- Repeat before drawing a conclusion. One launch or one stream may reflect timing, topic, or promotion rather than a reliable format advantage. Use your own comparable results rather than an unsupported benchmark.
Live-streaming requirements and monetization context
YouTube lists mobile, webcam, and encoder options for live streaming. A channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days to stream. These are access requirements, not evidence that extra equipment increases watch time. YouTube Help: Learn about live streams.
For eligible monetized live streams, YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as possible revenue methods, while cautioning that ad slots are not guaranteed to serve.
