Google Cloud Compute Engine YouTube Streaming Cost Calculator: VM, Disk, and Bandwidth

A practical framework for estimating Compute Engine streaming costs: VM runtime, disk, YouTube-bound transfer, other network traffic, and bandwidth capacity.

Estimate a Compute Engine YouTube stream by adding three separate costs: VM runtime, provisioned disk, and any applicable network transfer. Google lists VM-to-YouTube transfer among transfers to specified Google products with no charge, but that narrow rule does not make every network cost in a streaming setup free. Your VM type, region, hours running, disk, and any traffic to other destinations determine the rest. Use Google Cloud’s pricing calculator for a configuration-specific estimate.

What goes into a Compute Engine streaming estimate?

Use this structure:

Estimated total = VM charges + disk charges + applicable network transfer charges.

This is a cost framework, not a quoted monthly price. Compute Engine VM prices do not include disk, images, or networking, which have separate pricing. The final estimate depends on the configuration and billing terms you select.

  • VM: region, machine family and type, and billed runtime.
  • Disk: disk type and provisioned capacity; include images or snapshots if they are part of your setup.
  • Network: outbound volume and destination. Separate traffic sent to YouTube from traffic sent elsewhere.
  • Billing context: currency and any discounts or credits that apply to your account.

Google’s pricing pages display prices in USD, while your billing currency can differ. Compute usage billing and minimum billing behavior do not, by themselves, determine a complete streaming bill. Verify current rates for the selected configuration in the Google Cloud pricing calculator.

Does Google Cloud charge for bandwidth to YouTube?

Google’s network pricing rules list transfer from a VM to specified Google products, including YouTube, as having no charge. That statement applies to the VM-to-named-Google-product transfer category; it should not be generalized to all traffic in a streaming architecture. Other destinations and types of network traffic may be priced differently. Check the current Google Cloud network pricing rules against each destination in your design.

Keep transfer charges separate from bandwidth capacity. A network transfer charge concerns pricing; a VM’s bandwidth limit concerns whether it can send data at the rate your stream needs. Limits vary with instance configuration and destination, and Google accounts bandwidth per VM rather than per vNIC or IP address. Check the Compute Engine network bandwidth documentation for capacity constraints.

Collect the inputs before calculating

  1. Choose the region and VM type. Record the region, machine family, and exact machine type. Compute pricing varies by configuration and location; do not assume one VM is the cheapest without comparing your workload.
  2. Estimate billed hours. Count the time the instance is expected to run, including time outside the broadcast if you leave it on for preparation, scheduling, or other tasks. A stream lasting a certain number of hours does not necessarily mean the VM runs only for those hours.
  3. Specify disk and related storage. Record disk class and provisioned size, and decide whether to include images and snapshots. These are not included in the VM price. Consult Google’s disk and image pricing reference.
  4. Estimate outbound data and destinations. Identify how much data leaves the VM and where it goes. Treat YouTube-bound transfer separately from internet destinations or other Google services; do not apply the YouTube rule to traffic that falls into a different category.
  5. Enter the configuration in the calculator. Use Google Cloud’s pricing calculator to model the selected VM, disk, runtime, and applicable network usage. Account for your billing currency and any eligible discounts or credits when interpreting the result.

How to assess bandwidth for the stream

A price estimate cannot tell you on its own whether a VM can sustain your chosen stream settings. Compare the stream’s required outgoing rate with the documented bandwidth limit for the specific VM configuration and destination, leaving practical headroom for the workload. Google’s bandwidth documentation describes maximum egress rates by instance configuration and destination; those ceilings are not rates charged per gigabyte.

Likewise, a transfer category with no charge does not guarantee that an instance has sufficient bandwidth. Evaluate the technical limit and the billing rule independently.

Use the right units

For the relevant Compute Engine quantities, Google uses binary units: 1 GiB = 230 bytes and 1 TiB = 240 bytes = 1,024 GiB. These definitions appear in Google Cloud’s current pricing documentation, accessed October 3, 2026. Do not substitute decimal GB or TB when comparing values stated in GiB or TiB.

Why there is no universal monthly total

A monthly figure without a region, machine type, runtime, disk configuration, and traffic destinations would not describe a specific workload. Compare candidate configurations using the same hours and storage assumptions, then check both the resulting price and whether the VM’s documented bandwidth limit can support the stream. Google publishes configuration- and region-specific pricing and directs users to its calculator for workload estimates. Pricing and network rules can change, so confirm the current official values when you calculate.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to operating a VM yourself: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running without a computer or home connection left on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
