YouTube Live Bitrate for 720p 60fps Playlist Streaming

YouTube's recommended 720p60 bitrate depends on the codec: 8 Mbps for H.264, 6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC. Set CBR and 2-second keyframes, then test stream health.

For a 720p60 YouTube Live stream, use the bitrate recommendation for the video codec you send to YouTube: 8 Mbps for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC. These are encoder-to-YouTube video ingestion rates, not a promise that every viewer will receive video at that bitrate. Set constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.

Recommended 720p60 bitrate by codec

YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists different rates for each supported codec. Choose the row matching the codec your encoder actually sends:

Ingestion video codec Minimum video bitrate Recommended video bitrate
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
H.264 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube’s listed configuration values, not results of a separate benchmark. Avoid treating 6 Mbps as a universal 720p60 setting: it is the recommended rate for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, while H.264’s recommended rate is 8 Mbps. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into multiple formats for viewers, so your encoder’s ingestion bitrate does not determine the exact bitrate each viewer receives. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table covers the live input settings; do not substitute recommendations for uploading finished video files.

Encoder settings to use

  • Resolution and frame rate: 1280 × 720 at 60 frames per second.
  • Video bitrate: use the recommended value for your ingestion codec in the table above. The listed minimums are lower bounds, not the recommended target.
  • Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: set a 2-second interval. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS for live ingestion. Its encoder setup guidance explains how to connect an encoder to a stream. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  • Codec: YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1. Confirm the selected codec in your encoder rather than choosing a bitrate based on a codec you are not sending.

Make sure your connection can sustain the stream

The encoder has to upload continuously at the selected video rate, along with audio and other network traffic. YouTube does not give a universal upload-headroom percentage in its cited guidance, so measure your actual connection and choose a quality it can reliably sustain rather than relying on a generic margin. Run an upload speed test, test the stream before the event using audio and motion similar to the planned content, and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages while live. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If the stream reports connection instability, reduce the encoder bitrate or resolution and test again. A speed-test result is a snapshot; sustained stability during the stream matters more than a brief peak.

Does a playlist change the 720p60 bitrate?

Not by itself. If “playlist” means a sequence of prerecorded videos being sent as one live broadcast, the relevant rate is still determined by the video encoder’s output codec, resolution and frame rate. The available official guidance does not establish a separate 720p60 bitrate for a viewer-facing YouTube playlist or a special YouTube rebroadcast workflow for one.

There is a different technical meaning in YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation: an HLS Media Playlist is a manifest used in an HLS live-ingestion workflow. It is not the same thing as a viewer’s collection of YouTube videos, and it does not establish a separate bitrate rule for that collection. See Google’s HLS live-ingestion reference.

Check the stream before relying on it

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and select the encoder workflow. Follow the stream URL and key shown for that broadcast; keep the stream key private.
  2. Set the encoder to 1280 × 720, 60 fps, the correct codec-specific bitrate, CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval.
  3. Start a test transmission before the event. Include representative audio and movement, then check the live preview, stream health and any warning messages.
  4. If YouTube reports dropped frames or an unstable connection, lower the bitrate or resolution, confirm the upload connection is stable, and repeat the test.
  5. Once the test is clean, start the intended broadcast and continue monitoring stream health.

YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and encoder setup instructions provide the official configuration and connection details. Stream controls such as latency and DVR are separate from the encoder bitrate; consult Manage live stream settings if you need to configure those options.

  • One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
