Multistreaming—also called simulcasting—sends the same live production to more than one platform at the same time. You can send separate outputs from a local encoder such as OBS, or send one feed to a cloud relay that distributes it. Choose based on your computer, upload capacity, the number of destinations, and how much control you want.
Choose how you want to multistream
The key difference is where the feeds are created and distributed. With local multiple outputs, your computer sends a stream to each destination. With a cloud relay, your computer sends one feed to a service, which forwards it to the selected platforms.
| Consideration | Local encoder with multiple outputs | Cloud relay |
|---|---|---|
| Computer resources | Runs on your computer or device. Multiple outputs can require more local processing, depending on whether encoding is repeated. | Sends one feed to the service for distribution; YouTube describes this approach as lighter on the device. |
| Upload capacity | Separate uploaded feeds can increase the total bitrate your connection must sustain. | You send one feed to the relay, which distributes it onward. |
| Control and setup | Can suit creators who want more control and have capable hardware. | Can suit creators who want a simpler setup or plan to stream to more than two channels. |
| Cost and limits | Depend on the encoder and setup; there is no universal price. | Subscriptions are common, and free-plan limits vary. Check the service’s current terms. |
These trade-offs are described in YouTube Help’s guide to streaming across platforms. For a relay, Restream documents connecting Twitch and YouTube as channels, creating an encoder/RTMP stream, selecting destinations, and configuring OBS with the relay’s stream key. Its guide is a vendor walkthrough, so check current destination support and plan terms before relying on a particular feature.
Check that your destinations are ready
- Choose the platforms your audience uses and confirm that each account is active and in good standing.
- If YouTube is a destination, verify the channel and enable live streaming in YouTube. First-time activation can take at least 24 hours, so do this ahead of your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance.
- Check whether your chosen workflow needs a server URL and stream key for each platform. Treat stream keys as credentials: use the platform’s and encoder’s account controls rather than sharing them publicly.
Calculate the upload speed you need
For separate local outputs, add the target bitrate of every feed you upload. YouTube’s example adds 6 Mbps and 4 Mbps for a combined target of 10 Mbps, then recommends upload speed 1.5–2 times that sum: 15–20 Mbps in the example. The margin helps provide headroom; it does not guarantee a stable stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a cloud relay, your connection sends one feed to the relay rather than a separate feed to every destination. You still need enough upload capacity for that outgoing feed. Test at the bitrate you intend to use, with realistic audio and motion, and monitor each destination’s stream-health indicators while live. YouTube puts the central requirement plainly: “For high-quality simulstreaming, sufficient Internet upload speed is critical for the live streams to work properly.”
How to multistream with OBS through a relay

- Connect your destinations. In Restream, connect the Twitch and YouTube accounts you want to use as channels and complete each platform’s authorization steps.
- Create an encoder stream. Create a stream of type Encoder | RTMP, then select or enable the destinations for this broadcast.
- Copy the relay credentials. Copy the stream key provided for the Restream encoder stream. Keep it private.
- Configure OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the service and server details specified by Restream, and enter the relay stream key. If OBS offers an account-connection path supported by the service, you can use that instead.
- Start and verify. Start streaming from OBS. Check that every selected destination receives the stream, then confirm audio, framing, and stream health on each platform.
You can also use Restream’s browser Studio route instead of sending an OBS encoder feed; follow its current setup instructions for the Studio workflow.
Check quality, platform rules, and viewer experience
Transcoding and viewer quality options
Do not assume viewers on every destination can choose the same playback quality. OBS’s documentation says transcoding availability depends on the platform and account tier. Its platform-specific claims include a Twitch tier distinction and YouTube transcoding for all streams, but the article is dated June 9, 2021; check current platform documentation rather than treating those details as guaranteed today.

Twitch simulcasting rules
Twitch’s simulcasting guidance applies unless an agreement requires exclusivity. It says not to make the Twitch viewing experience worse than on other services and not to use Twitch to direct viewers to another service’s live stream. Check current Twitch terms and any individual agreement that applies to your account before going live.
Copyright and content rights
Multistreaming does not grant permission to use music, game footage, or other material. Make sure you have the rights needed for the content on every destination, and review each platform’s current copyright and live-stream policies. A stream permitted on one platform may still create a problem on another.

Troubleshoot common multistream problems
- One destination stays offline: Confirm that the destination is selected in the relay or configured as an output, the account authorization is still valid, and the correct stream key is in use.
- Video or audio stutters: Check upload speed under realistic load. With separate local outputs, recalculate the sum of target bitrates and compare it with the connection’s available upload capacity; reduce bitrate or use a single-feed relay if your setup cannot sustain the combined target.
- OBS sends a feed but viewers cannot select quality: Transcoding options vary by platform and account tier. Check the destination’s current documentation; do not assume a viewer-quality menu is available everywhere.
- The Twitch experience differs from other destinations: Review the Twitch simulcasting terms and correct any intentional or accidental degradation of the Twitch stream. Do not direct Twitch viewers to another platform’s live stream.
- YouTube will not accept a live stream: Confirm channel verification and live-stream enablement. First-time enablement may take at least 24 hours.
Or let it run in the cloud
