Windows manages network activity during Modern Standby, and “connected” does not guarantee that OBS will keep encoding and sending a YouTube stream as it does while the PC is awake. Keep the computer awake for the broadcast, then investigate ordinary network or encoder problems only if the stream also drops while Windows stays awake.
Why connected standby can end an OBS stream
OBS must keep encoding and sending video over a live connection to YouTube’s ingest server. Modern Standby is a low-power state in which Windows manages network access; on battery, it may permit network activity for supported scenarios and quiesce it otherwise. Microsoft says Adaptive Connected Standby has been the connectivity default on Modern Standby systems since Windows 10 version 2004. That describes Windows network behavior, not a guarantee that OBS encoding, capture sources, or the live connection will continue as they do while the PC is awake. Microsoft’s Modern Standby networking documentation explains the distinction.
So if OBS drops precisely when the machine enters standby, keep Windows awake during the broadcast. Do not assume that changing bitrate will solve a power-state transition. OBS describes disconnections more generally as instability between the computer and the remote ingest server; its network guidance is relevant when drops happen while the PC remains awake. OBS connection troubleshooting
First determine whether standby is the trigger
- Check the timing. Note whether the OBS disconnect and YouTube’s stream-health change coincide with the PC entering sleep, or whether drops also occur while you are actively using the computer. A simultaneous network fluctuation can look similar, so timing is a clue rather than proof.
- Keep the PC awake for a broadcast. Check Windows’ sleep timeout and, on a laptop, what closing the lid does. Labels, available choices, and exact settings paths vary by Windows release and device; use the power settings available on your system rather than relying on a universal menu path. If you need to close the lid, confirm that doing so will not put the PC to sleep.
- Check the supported sleep state. Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal and run
powercfg /a. Look for Modern Standby, listed as “Standby (S0 Low Power Idle),” and whether Windows reports the state as network connected or disconnected. The output tells you what the system supports; it does not establish that OBS will keep streaming in that state. - Inspect standby-session details if needed. Run
powercfg /sprto generate a System Power Report. Microsoft’s Modern Standby validation overview describes diagnostics including SleepStudy, which records whether a standby session was connected. Consult the report for the relevant sleep period.
If OBS disconnects while Windows stays awake
That points away from standby as the sole cause and toward a general connection, encoder, or YouTube ingest issue. Work through these checks one at a time so you can tell whether a change helps:

- Check connection stability and upload capacity. Compare OBS’s connection behavior and logs with YouTube’s stream health. Confirm that the available upload connection is stable for your stream settings; reducing bitrate is a diagnostic option only if the connection cannot sustain the current rate.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if available. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming because Wi-Fi can be unstable. A wired connection can help diagnose a separate Wi-Fi problem, but it will not stop Windows entering standby.
- Test the network path. OBS identifies VPNs, security software, network-optimization utilities, drivers, routers, and ISPs as possible factors. Where safe and practical, test without VPN or network-prioritization software, check security software and drivers, and compare behavior on another stable connection. These are diagnostic paths, not guaranteed fixes.
- Check YouTube’s view of the stream. Monitor stream health in YouTube Live Control Room, verify the encoder’s status, and test outbound internet connectivity, following YouTube’s stream troubleshooting guidance.
What YouTube auto-start and auto-stop do—and do not do
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options control whether an incoming encoder feed starts or stops the broadcast. They do not change Windows power settings or prevent the computer from sleeping. Use them to manage broadcast lifecycle behavior, not as a remedy for standby-related disconnects. See YouTube’s stream settings.
