YouTube RTMP Connection Refused on a Linux VPS: Troubleshooting Steps

A “connection refused” error means the connection was rejected before your encoder established a usable stream. First confirm where it is connecting: directly to YouTube, or to an RTMP relay on your VPS. Then verify the current YouTube RTMPS address, port, TLS/SNI behavior, and outbound network rules. If a relay is involved, test each connection leg separately. The message alone does not prove that YouTube is down, a stream key is invalid, or a provider is blocking a port.

Start by identifying which connection is failing

A Linux VPS can be part of two different setups:

  • Direct publishing: OBS or FFmpeg on the VPS connects straight to YouTube’s ingest server.
  • Relay publishing: OBS or FFmpeg connects to an RTMP service on the VPS, which then pushes the stream to YouTube. NGINX’s RTMP module, for example, supports RTMP as well as HLS and DASH workflows (NGINX RTMP module).

In a relay setup there are two independent network connections: encoder-to-relay and relay-to-YouTube. Check the address configured in the encoder first. If it points to a local or VPS-hosted relay, an encoder connection error may have nothing to do with YouTube’s ingest endpoint; check the relay’s outbound connection separately.

Work through the checks in order

1. Copy the current RTMPS details from YouTube

Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and use the stream’s connection settings to copy its ingest URL and stream key. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default; explicitly select the lock/RTMPS URL. Do not rely on a hostname or path saved from an older setup. Keep the stream key private, and do not paste it into public logs or support posts.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP through TLS. Its documented setup requires the RTMPS protocol, a valid YouTube ingest server and application path, and port 443. See YouTube’s RTMPS delivery guide.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Check protocol, hostname, path, and port as a set

Make sure the encoder is using the RTMPS URL exactly as supplied by YouTube—not a plain RTMP URL with a different port, a remembered hostname, or the default port for a self-hosted RTMP server. A mismatch in the destination or port can prevent connection setup.

RTMPS also requires a real TLS handshake. YouTube specifies that the server hostname must be available for authentication through SNI (Server Name Indication). A client that opens a TCP connection but does not negotiate TLS is not correctly using RTMPS, even if the host and port appear plausible.

3. Test outbound reachability from the machine that publishes

Run an appropriate TCP/TLS connectivity check from the VPS that is actually making the failing connection. For direct publishing, test from the encoder host. For a relay, test from the relay process’s host for the relay-to-YouTube leg; a successful test from the encoder machine does not establish that the relay can reach YouTube.

If the check fails, inspect both layers of network policy:

What you see Where to look next
Immediate connection refusal before streaming starts Confirm the configured destination and port, then check whether an intermediate service or firewall is rejecting the connection. A refusal alone does not establish that the stream key is invalid or that YouTube is unavailable.
TLS or certificate error Verify that the URL is RTMPS, the hostname and port match YouTube’s current settings, and the client performs TLS with the hostname available for SNI.
Timeout or “failed to connect to server” Check the copied URL and RTMPS support, then test outbound reachability. YouTube uses “failed to connect to server” in encoder guidance for a connection timeout; it is not interchangeable with every refusal or TLS error.
Connected, but dropped frames or intermittent disconnections Investigate network stability and whether the bitrate is sustainable. This is a stream-path or stability problem, not the same as failing to establish the initial connection.

5. Check the stream key only after confirming the destination

Copy the key associated with the same stream settings as the ingest URL, and confirm that the encoder has not retained a stale or mistyped value. A bad key may matter after a connection reaches YouTube’s ingest service; it does not by itself explain every TCP refusal. Avoid sharing the key when asking for help.

6. Once connected, verify encoder settings and stream health

Encoder settings affect compatibility and stream quality, but are not the first explanation for a TCP connection refusal. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Test with representative audio and motion, then monitor stream health in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the applicable resolution and bitrate recommendations.

Direct publishing versus a VPS relay

Setup Connection to test first Next connection
Encoder publishes directly to YouTube VPS encoder to YouTube ingest URL and port None: the encoder’s YouTube connection is the publishing leg
Encoder publishes through an RTMP relay Encoder to the relay address and listener port Relay host to YouTube RTMPS address and port 443

Use logs from the component that owns the failing leg. If the encoder can reach the relay but the relay cannot reach YouTube, changing the encoder-to-relay connection will not solve the relay’s outbound problem. If the relay-to-YouTube leg succeeds but the encoder cannot publish to the relay, inspect the relay listener, its address and port, and the path between encoder and relay.

After connection: settings and network symptoms

Once the connection is established, distinguish stream configuration from connectivity. YouTube’s recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds) and CBR guidance help with encoder compatibility and delivery. They do not replace checking the RTMPS endpoint when a connection is refused.

For dropped frames or intermittent disconnects, OBS says these indicate a network issue between the computer and remote ingest server. Check the network path and whether the configured bitrate is sustainable rather than treating the symptom as an initial connection refusal. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide also covers interference from external software and network instability.

Common dead ends to avoid

  • Changing random ports: For YouTube RTMPS, use the current URL and port 443 specified in its guidance; do not substitute the default port of a local RTMP service.
  • Assuming the key is the cause: First determine whether TCP and, for RTMPS, TLS connection setup succeed. A refusal does not prove a key problem.
  • Testing only the wrong machine: In a relay arrangement, test the relay host’s outbound path to YouTube, not just the encoder’s path to the relay.
  • Treating dropped frames as a refusal: A stream that connects and later loses frames needs network-stability and sustainable-bitrate checks.
  • Assuming the provider is blocking traffic: Check the host firewall and provider controls, but do not attribute the failure to a provider without evidence from that VPS’s actual connection test or policy.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream rather than diagnose a VPS-based encoder, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
