For a YouTube Live stream, set stereo audio to 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz. For 5.1 surround, use 384 Kbps at 48 kHz; when sending 5.1 over RTMP or RTMPS, use AAC. If the warning remains, check its exact wording: it may point to sample rate, codec, missing audio, or multiple audio streams—not bitrate alone.
Recommended YouTube Live audio settings
| Audio format | Bitrate | Sample rate | Codec guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stereo | 128 Kbps | 44.1 kHz | For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3. |
| 5.1 surround | 384 Kbps | 48 kHz | For RTMP/RTMPS, 5.1 requires AAC. |
These are YouTube’s live-encoder recommendations, not its separate recommendations for uploaded video files. YouTube also lists CBR as the bitrate-encoding mode for RTMP/RTMPS. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
Diagnose the warning before changing settings
Read the precise message in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube identifies different audio problems separately, including an outgoing bitrate that is too high or low, an incorrect sample rate, an unsupported codec, no audio, and multiple audio streams. A bitrate adjustment will not fix a mismatch in one of those other settings. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.
- Bitrate warning: Match the bitrate to stereo or 5.1 using the table above.
- Sample-rate warning: Check that the encoder is set to 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1.
- Codec warning: Verify that the codec is supported for your ingestion protocol.
- Missing audio: Check that the outgoing stream actually contains audio.
- Multiple audio streams: Inspect the encoder or production routing and ensure the stream meets the requirement indicated by the warning.
Check codec and protocol compatibility
RTMP or RTMPS
YouTube lists AAC and MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS audio. For 5.1 over either protocol, use AAC. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live delivery; confirm that the encoder’s selected protocol and audio options match the configuration you intend to send.

HLS
YouTube’s HLS setup guidance lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency, so do not assume that every RTMP/RTMPS setting applies unchanged. Check the HLS-specific setup requirements at YouTube’s HLS setup page.
Step-by-step troubleshooting
- Open Live Control Room and read the exact warning. Identify whether it names bitrate, sample rate, codec, missing audio, or multiple audio streams.
- Confirm the channel format. Decide whether your program is stereo or 5.1, then set the corresponding bitrate and sample rate from the table.
- Match codec to protocol. For RTMP/RTMPS, choose AAC or MP3; for 5.1, choose AAC. For HLS, use one of the codecs YouTube lists for that protocol.
- Check the outgoing audio signal and stream count. Confirm audio is present and address any multiple-stream warning in the encoder or routing setup.
- Run a representative test before the event. Include audio and movement similar to the planned live program. Check the preview, stream health, and any warning messages, then continue monitoring audio and video during the stream.
YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its guidance recommends testing with representative audio and movement, monitoring stream health, and reviewing messages. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
