Best Bitrate for a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Stream Over 24 Hours

Use 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1/HEVC at 4K 60fps, with 20% upload headroom. A 24-hour stream also needs a local archive plan.

For a 4K/2160p, 60 fps YouTube Live stream, YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC. These are video-bitrate recommendations for live ingest, not results from a 24-hour test. YouTube does not publish a different bitrate for a 24-hour playlist: choose the rate for your ingest codec, then make sure your connection can sustain it with headroom.

Recommended bitrate for 4K 60fps YouTube Live

Ingest codec YouTube minimum YouTube recommended video bitrate
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps
AV1 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps

These figures are from YouTube’s live encoder settings. The minimums are not the recommended targets. Use the live-streaming table rather than YouTube’s separate guidance for uploading prerecorded videos.

The codec changes the recommended rate; the 24-hour duration does not. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, so your ingest setting describes what you send to YouTube, not the bitrate every viewer receives.

How much upload bandwidth to allow

YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom. For a 50 Mbps H.264 video stream, that means planning for approximately 60 Mbps of available upload capacity; for a 35 Mbps AV1 or HEVC stream, approximately 42 Mbps. These are planning figures based on the video bitrate plus 20% headroom, not guarantees of network performance.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

YouTube says total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and advises leaving room for fluctuations. Congestion, other users and devices on the connection, and a separate backup stream can all increase the capacity you need. See YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips.

Encoder settings that matter

  • Codec: Set the encoder to H.264, AV1 or H.265/HEVC, and use the matching bitrate recommendation above.
  • Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame rate: Set 60 fps if the source and encoder are intended to deliver 60 fps.
  • Transport: Use RTMPS when available; YouTube recommends it for secure transport.
  • Latency: At 4K 60 fps, YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable; the stream uses normal latency.

Exact control names differ by encoder. Apply the values in the encoder’s stream or output settings, and enter the stream key associated with the YouTube Live event. YouTube documents supported codecs and settings in its live encoder guidance.

Prepare a 24-hour playlist stream

A continuous run adds operational and replay concerns, but it does not change the bitrate recommendation. YouTube recommends testing before going live; its own guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

  1. Check the source and playlist. Confirm the intended videos and audio play in the right order, and that the loop behaves as expected in your playback or streaming setup.
  2. Configure the encoder. Select the ingest codec and recommended bitrate, CBR, 60 fps, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Use RTMPS when available.
  3. Test representative content. Include the fastest motion and busiest audio in the playlist. Check the YouTube preview and stream health before starting the full run.
  4. Confirm network capacity. Measure available upload under realistic conditions and account for other traffic or a backup stream, not just the connection’s advertised peak.
  5. Monitor the run. Watch YouTube’s stream health and check video and audio quality. If recording a local backup, verify that its file continues to grow.

YouTube’s operational guidance covers encoder preparation, preview, testing failover where applicable, local recording, and monitoring: encoder settings and workflow and stream monitoring guidance.

Archive and DVR limits beyond 12 hours

Do not assume YouTube will preserve the complete 24-hour run as a replay. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. “May not” is not a claim that every longer stream fails to archive. Record a local backup if keeping the full run matters. YouTube’s archive guidance

DVR is a separate viewer feature from archiving: rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. YouTube’s DVR guidance

Troubleshooting bitrate and stream health

  • Connection warnings or dropped frames: Check whether available upload capacity remains above the total outgoing stream bitrate, with the recommended 20% headroom. Reduce competing traffic or lower the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the target.
  • Unstable quality despite adequate advertised speed: Test during the time and conditions you plan to stream. Shared or congested connections can deliver less usable upload than their peak rate suggests.
  • Encoder settings rejected or stream not behaving as expected: Confirm that the selected bitrate matches the ingest codec and that rate control is CBR. Check the keyframe interval and RTMPS configuration against YouTube’s settings.
  • 4K low-latency setting unavailable: This is expected at 4K 60 fps; YouTube uses normal latency for that combination.
  • No complete replay afterward: A run over 12 hours may not be archived, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. Keep and verify a local recording rather than relying on the YouTube archive.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a pre-recorded playlist that needs to stay live on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60 fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; it does not re-encode. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers.

The first day is free with no card. The monthly plan is $9.99 per month. The service is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not live camera feeds. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
