The interruption may come from an unstable upload path, encoder settings or stream format, or the Pi’s capture and encoding pipeline. Start with the exact stream-health warning in YouTube Studio, then test the upload connection and check the encoder and Pi logs before changing hardware.
Start with the YouTube Studio stream-health warning
Open the stream’s health or status in YouTube Studio and note the exact message and when it appears. YouTube’s health and configuration diagnostics cover issues such as audio or video, bitrate, frame rate, codecs, keyframe frequency, and consistency between primary and backup streams. A warning that YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming describes what YouTube is receiving; it does not automatically prove that your internet provider is at fault.
Keep the warning and its timing so you can compare it with the Pi’s encoder logs and network behavior. If you need to share a command or logs for help, remove the stream key first.
Check whether the upload connection can sustain the stream
Test upload speed with the Pi connected where and how it normally streams. If interruptions tend to happen at particular times, test during those periods too. Compare sustainable upload capacity with the encoder’s configured bitrate, and consider other traffic and variation on the connection. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing a stream quality reliable for the available connection; it does not establish a universal safety margin that guarantees a stable stream.

If the Pi is on Wi-Fi, try a temporary Ethernet connection and compare behavior under otherwise similar conditions. A Cat 6 cable is one practical way to run that diagnostic. If wired streaming is stable while Wi-Fi is not, investigate the wireless path. A wired test will not, by itself, fix inadequate ISP upload capacity, router problems, encoder settings, or a capture process that stops supplying video.
Verify the encoder settings
Compare the actual output settings with YouTube’s current live encoder guidance. For RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval must not exceed four seconds. Use RTMPS if your encoder workflow supports it, and confirm that audio is present and encoded in a format supported by that ingestion path.

These are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a connection or Pi can sustain a particular stream. YouTube’s published H.264 bitrate figures below are encoder settings, not measured household upload speeds. The recommended figure is not proof that a connection delivering exactly that much upload bandwidth will be reliable.

Check the Pi’s capture and encoding process
Watch the streaming application’s logs and process health through an interruption. Check whether the camera or other video source remains available, whether the encoder process exits or reports errors, and whether the command is producing the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and output you intended. Raspberry Pi’s camera software documentation covers network video streaming and H.264 bitrate controls. It notes that on Raspberry Pi 5, the low-latency option reduces encoding latency but slightly reduces coding efficiency; that detail is not evidence that a Pi 5, or any particular model, causes disconnects.
Before changing settings, run a test stream with representative movement and audio. YouTube advises testing before going live, monitoring stream health during the event, and reviewing its messages.

Use the symptoms to narrow the fault
- YouTube reports insufficient incoming video, but the encoder process stays alive: compare network continuity with encoder output continuity. The warning alone does not distinguish them.
- The streaming process exits or camera capture fails: investigate the local source, software, configuration, power, and logs.
- Streaming is stable over Ethernet but not Wi-Fi: focus on the wireless path, while remembering that other causes can coexist.
- The warning names a configuration or media issue: check the relevant codec, bitrate, frame rate, audio, keyframe interval, or stream configuration rather than assuming the network is to blame.
These are diagnostic comparisons, not guaranteed fixes. A disconnect is not enough evidence to conclude that the Pi, camera, power supply, or router needs replacing.
Information to collect if it keeps disconnecting
For a specific diagnosis, record the Raspberry Pi model, camera or other source, operating system, streaming application and version, resolution, frame rate, configured bitrate, and whether the Pi uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Include upload-test results, relevant encoder logs, and the exact YouTube Studio health message with its timing. If you share the full encoder command, remove the stream key and any other credentials.
