To restart a Raspberry Pi YouTube livestream after a reboot, run its camera or video-source encoder as a systemd service, enable that service at boot, and configure recovery for failures that happen while the Pi is running. Boot startup and runtime recovery are separate: systemctl enable handles the former, not every camera, encoder, or network interruption.
What you need before configuring auto-start
- A Raspberry Pi with a supported video source, such as a camera attached to the Pi or an IP/RTSP source.
- A working encoder command that can publish that source to YouTube. The exact command and capture tools depend on the Pi model, operating system, camera, and whether you are encoding or copying an existing stream.
- A YouTube Live Control Room stream URL and stream key.
- A reliable network connection and upload capacity suitable for the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you intend to use.
A documented Pi 4 example uses Raspberry Pi OS Lite 64-bit (Bookworm), FFmpeg, v4l-utils, and rpicam-apps. Treat those as that project’s choices, not a universal hardware or software requirement. Its systemd setup is a useful reference, but adapt the executable, command, user, paths, and environment to your own working encoder setup: YouTube-Pi4-StreamMachine.
Create or select the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a stream or select one you already use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the encoder’s configuration. YouTube notes that returning to a stream may load its previous settings, including its key. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Use the RTMPS ingest URL from Live Control Room if your encoder supports it. YouTube warns that the ordinary RTMP URL may appear by default; see YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not commit it to a public repository or expose it in screenshots, scripts, or logs. A local configuration file excluded from version control is one approach described by the Pi project above.
Choose settings the Pi and connection can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult YouTube’s current encoder settings table rather than applying one bitrate to every Pi configuration.
Test with audio and video motion similar to what you will actually stream. Choose a bitrate that fits measured upload capacity, leaving headroom for normal network variation. A speed test can help assess the connection, but it does not replace checking YouTube’s stream health during a representative test.

Decide how video is captured and processed
- Local camera or network source: confirm the source works after a fresh boot and that the service can access it under its configured system user.
- Copying versus transcoding: copying a compatible incoming video can reduce processing work; transcoding gives control over output settings but uses CPU or other available encoding resources. Which is practical depends on the source and Pi.
- RTMP versus RTMPS: choose RTMPS when the selected encoder supports it and use the matching URL supplied in Live Control Room.
These choices are configuration-dependent; the cited Pi project does not establish one camera, encoding mode, or Pi model as suitable for every setup.
Run the encoder as a systemd service
First make sure the encoder command works when run manually. Then create a systemd unit that runs that same command with its required absolute executable path, working directory, user, and environment. The unit’s ExecStart should invoke your actual script or encoder command; there is no single safe universal command because camera and source configurations differ.

- Create or edit the unit file for the encoder service, with the correct command and any required local configuration paths. Ensure the service user has access to the camera, files, and network resources it needs.
- After creating or changing the unit, reload systemd’s unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable the service so systemd starts it during boot:
sudo systemctl enable your-service.service. Replaceyour-service.servicewith the actual unit name. - Start it for the first run without rebooting:
sudo systemctl start your-service.service. - Check whether it is running:
sudo systemctl status your-service.service. - Inspect recent service output if it fails or does not publish:
sudo journalctl -u your-service.service -n 100 --no-pager.
The Pi project documents the daemon reload, enable, start, status, and journal workflow. Confirm the service status and logs rather than assuming that a successful enable command means the stream itself is live.
Configure recovery beyond reboot startup
A service enabled at boot addresses a host reboot. If the encoder exits later, the camera disappears, or the network drops, recovery depends on the unit’s restart policy, the encoder, or a separate supervisor. Configure and test those behaviors for the failures you expect; simply enabling the service does not prove recovery from them.

The community YouTube-AutoEncoder project illustrates FFmpeg/systemd recovery patterns for camera loss, encoder failure, network interruption, and host reboot. Its lifecycle design is project-specific, not a guarantee that the same configuration will suit another source or Pi.
Test a real reboot and verify the broadcast
- Start the service and check its status and journal for errors.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that the encoder connection and preview appear as expected. Monitor YouTube’s stream health while testing representative audio and motion.
- Reboot the Pi during a planned test:
sudo reboot. - After the Pi returns, check
sudo systemctl status your-service.serviceand the journal. Confirm in Live Control Room that the encoder reconnected and the stream is in the expected state. - Test runtime recovery separately by exercising the relevant failure safely—for example, a controlled encoder restart—then confirm the behavior in both systemd logs and Live Control Room.
A reboot can interrupt the current broadcast. YouTube Help states, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That stated archive rule does not promise that an interrupted stream resumes the same broadcast or that every reboot produces an archive.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Service does not start after reboot | The wrong unit was enabled, the unit has an error, or its command depends on an unavailable path or environment. | Check systemctl status and journalctl; verify the unit name, absolute executable path, working directory, user, and required environment. Reload systemd after unit edits and confirm the service is enabled. |
| Service runs, but YouTube receives no stream | Incorrect stream URL or key, an encoder command problem, or a source that is unavailable to the service. | Inspect the encoder’s log output, recheck the URL/key in Live Control Room, and verify that the configured user can access the source. |
| Stream stops when the camera or source fails | Boot enablement does not itself supervise source loss. | Check whether the encoder exits and what restart or recovery behavior the unit provides. Test the chosen recovery mechanism against the actual camera or network source. |
| Unstable or unhealthy stream | Selected bitrate may exceed reliable upload capacity, or encoder settings may not suit the source or Pi. | Run a representative test, reduce output demands if needed, check YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for the chosen codec/resolution/frame rate, and monitor stream health. |
| Service works manually but not as a service | The interactive shell may provide paths, permissions, or environment variables that systemd does not have. | Use explicit paths and configure the correct service user, working directory, environment, and device access in the unit. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than live camera capture, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; the cloud loops the uploaded video and can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and does not replace a Pi camera encoder for a live camera feed. Start a free day at StreamNeo registration.
