How to Stream Authorized Video Files to YouTube Live from a Raspberry Pi 3 with FFmpeg

Use FFmpeg on a Raspberry Pi 3 to stream an authorized local video to YouTube Live, with guidance on looping, playlist sequencing, encoder settings, and testing.

You can use FFmpeg on a Raspberry Pi 3 to send an authorized local video to YouTube Live, or repeat one supported file with -stream_loop -1. A multi-file playlist needs its own sequencing method; that loop option repeats one input and is not, by itself, a playlist player. This guide covers the local-file workflow and the settings to verify, but does not claim a tested Pi 3 performance limit.

Before you begin: use media you may rebroadcast

Prepare local video and audio that you own, have licensed, or are otherwise authorized to deliver. YouTube’s formatting guidance says the uploader must be the copyright holder or an authorized representative for the video and audio files delivered to YouTube (YouTube video and audio formatting specifications). A public YouTube URL or playlist membership does not establish permission to download or rebroadcast its contents. The cited guidance does not determine the rights status of any particular video or settle every applicable legal or platform term.

This workflow is for files available to FFmpeg on the Pi, not for extracting arbitrary videos from a YouTube playlist. Keep the source material on local storage where practical: it avoids relying on a separate network retrieval step while the stream is running.

Prepare YouTube Live and the Raspberry Pi

Enable live streaming and retrieve the ingest details

  1. Confirm live streaming is enabled for your YouTube account. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance.
  2. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live event. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the event. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, place it in a public script repository, or share screenshots that reveal it.
  3. Check the intended resolution, frame rate, and audio in your event and encoder setup. Start FFmpeg only when the event is ready to receive the feed.

Check the Pi and network

  • Identify your Raspberry Pi 3 model and revision, installed operating system, and FFmpeg build. Confirm that the build can read your file’s container, video codec, and audio codec.
  • Measure sustained upload capacity where the Pi will run; do not rely on a brief speed-test peak. Leave headroom for variation and other devices using the connection.
  • Provide stable power and ventilation, and watch CPU load and temperature during a representative test. The cited sources establish no tested Pi 3 ceiling for playlist retrieval and encoding, so confirm your exact workload rather than assuming a resolution will work.

Choose YouTube-compatible encoder settings

YouTube accepts encoder-based live streams over RTMP or RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 in the supported encoder modes, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. For a common FFmpeg workflow, H.264 video with AAC audio is a practical target when the installed build supports it. Match the output to the event and the Pi’s measured capacity (YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

YouTube target Published H.264 recommended bitrate
480p at 30 fps 4 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not measured Raspberry Pi 3 encoding results. Choose a bitrate your sustained upload can carry reliably; use a lower resolution or frame rate if the connection or Pi cannot sustain the target. Configure a two-second keyframe interval and CBR when the chosen encoder supports those controls. YouTube recommends a keyframe frequency of two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.

Loop one local file indefinitely

FFmpeg’s -stream_loop option repeats an input; -1 means infinite looping. It is an input option, so put it before the relevant -i (FFmpeg main options). The following is a template, not a verified Pi 3 performance configuration. Replace the file path, server URL, key, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to match your file, account, and connection:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/authorized-video.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4M -maxrate 4M -bufsize 8M
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_SERVER/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

This example targets 30 fps, uses a two-second GOP at that frame rate, and sets a 4 Mbps video rate as an example aligned with YouTube’s 480p30 recommendation. It does not scale the source to 480p; set the output dimensions deliberately if the file’s resolution differs. If the stream key is embedded in a command, avoid shell history exposure and keep the command out of shared logs. Use the RTMPS server URL supplied by YouTube rather than copying the illustrative placeholder.

-re reads the file at approximately its normal playback rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. Confirm that FFmpeg’s selected encoders exist in your build; if libx264 or AAC encoding is unavailable, use a build and encoder combination that YouTube supports.

Play a sequence of local files

-stream_loop -1 alone does not advance through several files. Create a playlist using a format supported by your FFmpeg build and choose an explicit method to repeat the sequence. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can read an ordered list of compatible files, but looping that assembled input should be tested with the installed build and the actual files before relying on it for a live stream. Do not assume files with different codecs, frame sizes, frame rates, or audio layouts will join cleanly without conversion.

A basic concat list contains one file entry per line, in playback order:

file '/path/to/authorized-video-1.mp4'
file '/path/to/authorized-video-2.mp4'

Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer for the sequence, then verify the complete loop locally before connecting it to YouTube. Paths containing quotes or unusual characters need correct escaping; confirm the demuxer accepts every entry. A failed or incompatible playlist can stop the encoder or produce discontinuities. Since no single multi-file command has been validated for every Pi 3 build and media combination here, do not treat a copied command as a guarantee of seamless looping.

Start, monitor, and verify the live feed

  1. Run a short private or unlisted test event where appropriate, using representative motion and audio rather than a static test frame.
  2. Start FFmpeg after YouTube’s event is ready. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, and listen for audio problems.
  3. Watch FFmpeg output, Pi CPU and temperature, and network stability for the duration you intend to stream. An initial successful connection does not prove the Pi can sustain the workload indefinitely.
  4. After the test, adjust resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the preview reports instability or the Pi/network cannot keep up. Test again before depending on the stream.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube does not show an incoming feed: verify that live streaming is enabled, the event is ready, and the RTMPS server URL and stream key match the current event. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours.
  • Authentication or connection errors: re-copy the event’s ingest details, check for missing characters or shell quoting errors, and ensure the Pi has network access to the ingest service. Do not expose the key while debugging.
  • Video stutters or the connection drops: compare the configured bitrate with sustained upload capacity, reduce the target if needed, and check whether other network users or Pi CPU load are interfering.
  • FFmpeg exits or cannot open the input: check the file path, permissions, storage availability, and whether the installed FFmpeg build can decode the file’s codecs and container.
  • A playlist stops at a file boundary: test the concat input separately, check list syntax and media compatibility, and verify the looping method on the installed build before going live.
  • Audio is missing or distorted: inspect the source audio stream and confirm that the selected AAC or MP3 encoder and sample rate are supported and configured as intended.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded videos, StreamNeo avoids keeping the Pi or another home computer on: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs the loop in the cloud, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and sends what you uploaded at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video streams to YouTube, not camera broadcasting. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
