How to Keep an FFmpeg YouTube Stream Within YouTube Live Bitrate Limits

YouTube Live bitrate targets depend on ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the right published value, configure CBR and keyframes, and test before streaming.

Match FFmpeg’s outgoing video bitrate to YouTube’s published recommendation for the incoming codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube calls for constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, recommends a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and advises testing with representative motion and audio before a broadcast. There is no single bitrate limit that applies to every live stream: YouTube publishes different minimum and recommended values for each mode.

Choose the right YouTube bitrate for your stream

Use the row for the resolution and frame rate you will send to YouTube, then the column for your ingest codec. These are YouTube’s published live-ingest figures, not upload recommendations for prerecorded videos. “Minimum” and “recommended” are distinct: aim for the recommended value when your connection can sustain it reliably.

Ingest resolution and frame rate H.264 minimum H.264 recommended AV1 / H.265 minimum AV1 / H.265 recommended
2160p (4K), 60 fps 14 Mbps 50 Mbps 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
2160p (4K), 30 fps 11 Mbps 42 Mbps 8 Mbps 30 Mbps
1440p, 60 fps 8 Mbps 34 Mbps 6 Mbps 24 Mbps
1440p, 30 fps 7 Mbps 21 Mbps 5 Mbps 15 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
720p, 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p, 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
480p, 30 fps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps
360p, 30 fps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps

Keep video bitrate separate from total upload use

The table’s target is for video. Audio and transport overhead also use bandwidth, so the connection needs headroom above the video target. A speed test is a starting point, not proof that the connection can sustain a live stream without variation. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set FFmpeg to match the selected ingest mode

Before setting encoder options, establish the exact output resolution, frame rate, and codec that FFmpeg will send. Then use the corresponding recommended bitrate if the connection can sustain it; otherwise choose a lower supported mode and test again. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as video codecs, and recommends RTMPS for ingest. The available codec depends on the encoder and ingest configuration.

Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval

  • Bitrate behavior: YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists CBR.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second frequency and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Frame rate: YouTube’s listed live settings support up to 60 fps.

FFmpeg option names and behavior depend on the installed version and the chosen encoder. The YouTube settings page specifies platform targets; it does not validate one universal FFmpeg command. Check the documentation for your local FFmpeg build and encoder, and confirm that the resulting stream actually uses CBR behavior and the intended keyframe interval rather than copying flags from an unrelated setup.

Audio and advanced encoder settings

YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its guidance specifies 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1 surround; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. Other recommended settings include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1, and Rec. 709 for SDR. YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Apply settings supported by your specific encoder and ingest mode.

Test before going live, then monitor stream health

  1. Choose the output mode. Record the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate FFmpeg will send, then select the matching row and codec column in YouTube’s table.
  2. Check sustained upload capacity. Run a speed test on the connection you will use. Allow room for audio and transport overhead; do not treat the video bitrate as the full network requirement.
  3. Verify encoder behavior. Configure the selected encoder for CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, checking option syntax and behavior against documentation for your installed FFmpeg build.
  4. Run a realistic test stream. Include audio and movement comparable to the planned broadcast. YouTube specifically advises that tests include “audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
  5. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages. Check the status before and during the event. If the connection cannot reliably sustain the configuration, lower the bitrate and, where needed, reduce resolution or frame rate; test the revised mode before relying on it.

Troubleshoot bitrate and stream-health problems

  • YouTube reports a bitrate issue: Confirm the actual outgoing codec, resolution, and frame rate, then compare them with the correct table entry. Check that the encoder is using CBR and that its target corresponds to that mode.
  • The stream is unstable despite a matching target: The connection may not sustain the video target plus audio and overhead. Test the upload again under the intended conditions, then try a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate as appropriate and retest.
  • Keyframe warnings appear: Check the selected encoder’s keyframe settings. YouTube recommends two seconds and a maximum interval of four seconds; confirm actual encoder behavior rather than assuming a copied flag has the intended effect.
  • Audio does not work as expected: Check that the selected audio codec is AAC or MP3 and that the channel configuration and sample rate fit YouTube’s listed guidance. For 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC.
  • A codec or HDR mode is unavailable: Codec availability depends on the encoder and ingest configuration. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 and does not support AV1 for HDR.
