How to Add Background Music to Prerecorded Store Promos on YouTube Live

Combine a prerecorded promo and properly cleared music in OBS or an editor, then preview the mix in YouTube Studio before going live.

For a YouTube Live broadcast, combine the prerecorded promo and music in OBS Studio or render them together in a video editor, then send the finished audio-and-video program to YouTube with an encoder. Use music licensed for the store’s promotional use and the livestream, preview the mix in YouTube Studio, and monitor the stream for copyright notices.

Choose music cleared for the whole use

Before adding a track, check that its license covers the promo itself, live streaming, the territories where it will be available, and any archived version of the broadcast. Calling music “background” or “royalty-free” does not by itself establish that those uses are permitted.

YouTube’s Audio Library is a straightforward place to start: YouTube says it knows those tracks to be copyright-safe on YouTube. Check the license for the specific track, including whether it requires attribution in the video description. Some Audio Library tracks use Creative Commons licenses. YouTube does not vouch for tracks from other libraries, and it cannot give legal guidance about off-platform use. For a store’s broader commercial use, verify that the selected track’s terms cover the exact use.

YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility for the necessary rights on the broadcaster: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.”

Choose how to combine the promo and music

Use separate sources in OBS when you need live control

Add the promo as an OBS Media Source and add the music as a separate source. This lets you adjust the music independently while preparing or running the scene. Turn on the promo source’s Loop option if it should repeat. Check whether the promo already contains audio: if it does, make sure that audio is not unintentionally playing over the separate music.

Render one combined file when the mix is final

If the music level and timing will not need live adjustment, combine the video and music in an editing app and use the finished file as the promo source. This makes the intended mix easier to review as one program before the broadcast. Decide whether the promo should play once or repeat, and make sure its audio and music cover the intended duration.

OBS documents support for common media formats, including MP4 video and MP3 or WAV audio. VLC playlist sources can also play local files and loop them. The right choice depends on whether you need separate music control and whether the promo should repeat; neither method removes the need to check the final output.

Set up the YouTube Live encoder

  1. Prepare a scene in OBS. Add the promo file as a Media Source. Enable Loop if it should repeat. Add a separate music source only if you want independent volume control; otherwise, use the combined render. Inspect the scene’s audio sources so the promo’s original sound is not unintentionally doubled.
  2. Open the stream setup in YouTube Studio. Create or select the stream in the Live Control Room and locate its server URL and stream key.
  3. Connect OBS to YouTube. Enter the server URL and stream key in OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingestion. Treat the stream key like a password; do not share it or include it in a public recording.
  4. Check audio output settings. YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its advanced guidance recommends stereo at 128 kbps and a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate. These are encoder-output recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular source or mix will sound right.
  5. Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Before making the broadcast public, listen to the Live Control Room preview. Check the music-to-promo balance, confirm the intended playback or loop behavior, and watch for audio or video problems.

Test, go live, and monitor the broadcast

  • Test the whole sequence with representative movement and audio, not just a still frame or silent segment.
  • Listen to the actual stream output and check it on the devices your audience is likely to use.
  • During the broadcast, watch YouTube Studio’s stream health and notices, and keep an eye on the live output.
  • After the event, review the archived stream for copyright claims if an archive is retained.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A stream can be temporarily interrupted or terminated if third-party content is detected. A license does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming: YouTube says that if you have licensed third-party content, you should ask the content owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. If YouTube flags content, follow the notice and resolve the rights issue with the relevant rights holder.

Common problems and fixes

What you notice What to check What to do
The music is missing from the preview or stream. Check that the music source is present in the active OBS scene and that the stream output includes its audio. Correct the scene or audio routing, then listen to the Live Control Room preview again before going live.
The music is too loud, too quiet, or competing with the promo. Check the actual stream mix, including any sound already present in the promo file. Adjust the separate music source in OBS, or revise and re-render the combined file. Listen to the preview rather than relying only on the source file levels.
The promo stops when it should repeat, or repeats when it should play once. Check the Media Source’s Loop setting or the sequence in the combined render. Set the source or edited file to match the intended playback behavior and test the transition.
YouTube shows a third-party-content notice or interrupts the stream. Review the notice and confirm the track’s license covers the live broadcast and any retained archive. Resolve the rights issue. If the material is licensed, ask the owner to allowlist the channel through Content ID where required; do not assume that a license alone prevents automated interruption.
OBS does not connect to the YouTube stream. Check that the selected stream’s server URL and stream key were entered correctly and that the key has not been exposed or replaced. Correct the encoder connection details in YouTube Studio and OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview again.
