Neither Google Compute Engine nor AWS Lightsail is automatically cheaper or more reliable for a 24/7 YouTube stream. Lightsail is easier to budget when a bundle has enough compute and its regional data-transfer allowance covers your stream. Compute Engine is more configurable, but you must estimate the VM, disk, and network charges together. Choose based on your encoder workload, region, bitrate, monthly outbound transfer, and recovery needs—not on a VM price alone.
This comparison is for a cloud server sending an encoder feed to YouTube. The server’s outbound stream is the input to YouTube; YouTube, not the VM, distributes the live stream to viewers.

For either provider, first decide whether the server will simply relay a prepared video stream or encode/transcode a live input. The latter can require substantially different CPU and memory capacity. There is no established benchmark showing one provider performs better for this exact workload.
Estimate the stream’s transfer before choosing a plan
Continuous video sends a large amount of data even at a modest bitrate. Estimate payload using:

Megabits per second × seconds streamed ÷ 8 = megabytes
Then convert using decimal units (1 TB = 1,000,000 MB). This estimates stream payload, not provider-billed usage; protocol overhead and other instance traffic add to it.

Use the bitrate you actually configure, not a generic assumption. YouTube’s recommended settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Leave headroom for network overhead and traffic besides the stream.

At the rough payload estimates above, a continuous 6 Mbps stream is already near or above the listed 1 TB and 2 TB allowances, while 10 Mbps exceeds all five listed allowances. That comparison is only a planning signal: check the selected Region’s rules, actual billing treatment, overhead, and other traffic before relying on a bundle’s allowance.
What to include in a Compute Engine estimate
Compute Engine uses usage-based billing. Google’s VM pricing page says disk and networking are outside the VM pricing coverage shown there. Build a complete estimate for the chosen machine type, region, operating system, disk, public networking, and expected transfer. Do not compare a VM-only price with a Lightsail bundle that includes storage and a transfer allowance.

Check the machine type’s documented egress limits and the stream’s destination. A published maximum is not a promise of steady throughput. The exact total cost cannot be established without your configuration and region.
How to configure and operate the YouTube stream
- Choose the output first. Set resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate according to YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for that combination. Do not assume one bitrate fits every stream.
- Prepare the encoder feed. Configure the VM’s encoder or relay for the actual workload. A prerecorded file loop and a live camera feed are different jobs; size CPU and memory for encoding or transcoding if required.
- Use YouTube’s ingest settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Add the stream key to the encoder privately; do not publish or share it. Keep the server’s network capacity above the outgoing bitrate with headroom.
- Test before the scheduled start. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Confirm that the encoder connects and that YouTube reports a healthy incoming signal.
- Monitor and plan recovery. Supervise the encoder process, monitor stream health, and decide how it should restart after a process or connection failure. If continuity matters, design and test a backup encoder or failover path. Provider choice by itself does not guarantee recovery.
Know YouTube’s stream and archive limits
YouTube Help’s current guidance, accessed in 2026, lists a limit of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key at the same time. Its encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same automatic-archive rule applies to streams longer than 12 hours. These platform details can change, so verify the current help pages before configuring a long-running channel.

A 24/7 schedule also makes content rights and channel policies especially important. Use material you have rights to stream, and do not assume that permission to upload a video automatically covers continuous rebroadcast. YouTube’s enforcement and monetization decisions are separate from whether your VM can send a signal.
