How to Stream Videos with Different Resolutions in One YouTube Live Playlist

Use an OBS VLC Video source to play mixed-resolution files in one YouTube Live stream. Set one output profile, test transitions, and check YouTube’s preview and stream health.

Yes—you can play prerecorded videos with different resolutions in one YouTube Live stream. Put the files in an OBS VLC Video source, choose a fixed output resolution and frame rate for the encoder, and send that single feed to YouTube. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into playback formats for viewers; you do not need a separate copy of every clip at each quality.

How mixed-resolution videos work in one live stream

The source files may have different dimensions, but OBS sends one configured video feed to YouTube. The encoder’s output settings—not a separate setting for each playlist item—define the incoming stream. YouTube then creates multiple playback formats for viewers on different devices and connections. YouTube describes its live-stream transcoding and recommended encoder settings.

Here, “playlist” means your ordered collection of prerecorded files in OBS. In YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation, a “Media Playlist” instead means a list of media segments that make up a live transport stream. YouTube’s HLS ingestion supports Media Playlists and ignores Master Playlists because YouTube transcodes the incoming stream itself. These are different uses of the word playlist. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation.

Set up an OBS playlist and connect it to YouTube

  1. Prepare the files. Put the videos in the order you want them to play and check that the files open and have usable audio. Test files with different resolutions and formats before scheduling a real broadcast.
  2. Add a VLC Video source in OBS. Add a source, choose VLC Video, and add the media files to its playlist. VLC must be installed for this source to be available. Use the source’s controls to choose looping or shuffling, as appropriate. OBS documents its media sources and VLC playlist controls.
  3. Choose one output profile. In OBS output and video settings, select the output resolution, frame rate, video codec, audio codec and bitrate the computer and internet connection can sustain. Your output does not need to match every source file’s dimensions. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval. Use its resolution- and frame-rate-specific bitrate table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
  4. Create or select the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream or select an existing one. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding encoder fields in OBS. Keep the key private. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection workflow.
  5. Start OBS and inspect the preview. Start streaming from OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public broadcast. Verify that video and audio are present and that the correct file is playing.
  6. Test transitions and monitor health. Before the event, run an unlisted or private test with representative files. Watch transitions between clips, audio levels and synchronization, the YouTube preview, and stream health. YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring audio and video quality during a stream. Review YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Choose settings that suit the connection

Pick the output resolution and frame rate based on the detail viewers need, the capabilities of the encoder, and reliable upload capacity. A higher output setting is not automatically better if the computer cannot encode it or the connection cannot sustain it. YouTube’s published bitrate values are recommendations, not independently measured requirements.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For one example with its conditions attached: YouTube lists 10 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps. Other codec columns and resolution/frame-rate combinations differ, so consult the current YouTube encoder settings table for your selected profile.

Different source dimensions do not require different stream keys or separate live broadcasts. The key connects the encoder to the stream; OBS’s configured output profile applies to the feed it sends.

Check rights and platform compliance before broadcasting

Confirm that you have the rights to broadcast every video and every audio track in the playlist, including music that may be embedded in a clip. A file playing successfully in OBS does not establish permission to stream it. Review YouTube’s rules and any applicable licenses for the content you plan to use; no general workflow can determine the rights status of a particular playlist.

Troubleshoot common playlist problems

  • VLC Video is missing from the source list: Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS and check again. OBS requires VLC for this source.
  • The live preview is blank or the stream does not connect: Check that OBS is sending to the intended YouTube stream URL and that the matching stream key is entered correctly. Confirm that OBS has started streaming and look for the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
  • A clip looks softer or differently framed than expected: The feed uses the encoder’s output settings, and YouTube creates viewer playback formats from that feed. Review the OBS output resolution and frame rate, then test the source in the preview.
  • A transition has a gap, unexpected image, or audio issue: Do not assume every combination of file dimensions, codecs, frame rates and audio layouts transitions seamlessly. Test the actual files in order, inspect the transition and audio, and adjust or replace problematic media before going live.
  • The stream drops or becomes unstable: Check OBS and YouTube stream health, then reduce output demands if the computer or upload connection cannot sustain the selected profile. Retest at the adjusted settings before the public event.
