Use two independent checks: supervise the FFmpeg process on your VPS, and check YouTube’s liveStream status through the YouTube Live Streaming API. The first catches a process that exits; the second can catch a stream YouTube is no longer receiving even while FFmpeg still appears to run. Alert only after an unexpected condition persists, and treat API-check failures as an unknown state—not proof that the stream is healthy or offline.
What to monitor: FFmpeg locally and YouTube remotely
A running FFmpeg process does not prove that YouTube is receiving a usable stream. The process may remain alive after the remote feed stalls. Conversely, an exited process is a clear local failure, but does not by itself explain the cause. Use both signals if you need to know whether the stream is actually reaching YouTube.
- VPS process check: detects when FFmpeg exits or its service fails locally.
- YouTube-side check: detects the status and health YouTube reports for the incoming stream.
- Monitoring-system check: detects when your API poller or notification route fails, so a broken monitor cannot silently look like a healthy stream.
Understand the YouTube status fields
The YouTube Live Streaming API distinguishes the event viewers watch from the feed sent to YouTube. A liveBroadcast represents the event; a liveStream carries the audio-video feed and can be bound to a broadcast. For ingest monitoring, identify and check the relevant liveStream resource rather than assuming the broadcast object itself reports the feed’s health. See Google’s LiveStreams resource reference and YouTube Live Streaming API overview.
| Field or value | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
status.streamStatus = active |
YouTube is receiving data via the stream. | Use this as the principal positive ingest signal, alongside the returned health status. |
created, ready, inactive, or error |
The stream is in a state other than active. | Compare the state with what you expect at that point in your runbook; do not treat every non-active state as the same failure without considering startup and planned shutdown. |
status.healthStatus = good, ok, or bad |
YouTube’s reported health category. | Evaluate it with the stream status and any reported configuration issues; an active stream can still warrant attention if its health is bad. |
noData |
YouTube’s live backend has no health-status information. | Treat it as unknown or needing investigation, not as a healthy result. |
The values above are definitions of API-reported states, not a guarantee that a particular viewer can watch without issue. The API reference describes the available fields; it does not set a universal poll interval or alert threshold.

Set up local FFmpeg supervision
On a VPS, run FFmpeg under a service manager such as systemd if that suits the operating system. Configure the service to start on boot, retain logs and exit status, and restart after an unexpected exit. Exact unit settings depend on your VPS distribution and deployment; the service manager can restart a failed process, but it cannot establish that YouTube is receiving healthy media.
- Capture logs and exit details. Make sure the service’s output is available to your normal system logs, and know how to check both its current state and its recent failure output.
- Enable boot startup. Confirm the service is enabled for the VPS’s normal boot path, rather than relying on a manual shell session.
- Choose a bounded restart policy. Restart on unexpected failure, but avoid an unexamined endless crash loop. A persistent input, encoding, or output problem still needs diagnosis.
- Test the failure path. In a controlled maintenance window, verify that an unexpected FFmpeg exit is recorded and that the service manager behaves as intended.
Configure FFmpeg reconnect behavior carefully
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation lists reconnect options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, reconnect_streamed, maximum delay, retry count, and total retry duration. Which options apply depends on the protocol and whether the connection is an input or output. Consult the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation for the protocol and FFmpeg version you actually use.

- Do not assume every reconnect option applies to an RTMP output or to every failure mode.
- Set finite retry bounds where unattended retries could otherwise continue indefinitely without restoring the stream.
- Test reconnect behavior against your actual input, output protocol, and installed FFmpeg build.
- Remember that reconnect is a recovery attempt, not an alert. It neither notifies you nor proves YouTube has resumed receiving data.
Poll YouTube and alert on sustained failures
Build a check that obtains the correct liveStream resource and evaluates its status and health against the expected state for your broadcast. Keep API errors separate from stream-state results: if authentication, quota, network access, or the API request fails, the stream state is unknown until a successful check can inspect it.
- Identify the stream resource. Keep the identifier for the feed you intend to monitor, especially if your workflow also uses a separate broadcast resource.
- Poll at a deliberate cadence. A shorter interval can reduce detection delay but increases API activity. Choose a cadence that fits your operational needs and the applicable API limits; Google’s status definitions do not prescribe a universal interval.
- Define unexpected states. Account for planned startup and shutdown. For example, a not-yet-active state during preparation may be expected, while the same state during a scheduled live period may not be.
- Require persistence before paging. Count consecutive unexpected results or otherwise require a condition to last for a chosen threshold, so a brief transition or reconnect does not generate a false alarm. There is no universal threshold in the API documentation.
- Notify on recovery if useful. A recovery message helps distinguish a resolved incident from one that is still open.
- Monitor the checker itself. Report API and notification-delivery failures separately from stream failures. Never translate “could not check” into “stream is healthy.”
Protect credentials and stream keys. Do not put a stream key in alert text, public logs, or a status page. Give the monitoring component only the access it needs, and restrict who can read its configuration and logs.

Choose the right monitoring layer
| Layer | Detects | Limitation | Useful comparison points |
|---|---|---|---|
| VPS process or service supervision | FFmpeg exits or fails locally. | A live process can still be stalled or fail to deliver useful media remotely. | Restart behavior, boot startup, log access, alert integration. |
| YouTube Live Streaming API check | YouTube’s reported stream status and health. | Requires API access and a polling mechanism; a failed request leaves stream state unknown. | Detection delay, API use, state handling, credential security. |
| External uptime or notification service | Independent scheduling and notification delivery, depending on the chosen service. | A generic HTTP check may not inspect YouTube’s actual stream state unless you expose a suitable health endpoint. | Check interval, notification channels, secret handling, retention, price. |
The first two layers directly test different parts of this problem. An external service can help run checks or deliver notifications, but its value depends on what it checks; an ordinary website ping is not the same as a YouTube ingest-health check.

FFmpeg exited
Check the service-manager status and captured FFmpeg logs. Determine whether the failure came from the input, encoder, or output/network path before changing restart behavior. A restart can restore a process, but will not fix a persistent cause.

FFmpeg is running, but YouTube reports inactive or error
Inspect the output connection, stream key or configuration, and any health or configuration issue reported by YouTube. The local process being alive is not evidence of remote receipt; use the API result for what YouTube reports.
YouTube reports noData
Do not clear the alert as healthy. This value means the live backend has no health-status information. Preserve the unknown condition and investigate why the check has no usable health result.

Alerts flap during startup or reconnect
Check whether your expected-state logic treats normal preparation as a failure. Add a persistence threshold and, if useful, a recovery notification. Tune those choices to your acceptable detection delay; the API does not define a universal setting.
The API check itself errors
Report the check failure as its own incident and inspect authentication, quota, and network access. Keep the last successful stream observation timestamp visible, but do not present stale status as a current confirmation.
Or let it run in the cloud
