To broadcast a nature-video playlist continuously on YouTube, use encoder streaming: YouTube’s Live Control Room provides a server URL and private stream key, while compatible encoder software loops your footage and sends it as a live feed. Set the encoder to match your source video and sustainable upload speed, test the stream, and monitor stream health before leaving it unattended. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. These are YouTube’s stated eligibility conditions for live streaming.
- Nature footage and audio you have the right to use, arranged in the order you want to play them.
- Encoder software that can play the intended media sequence continuously and send it to YouTube. A user-facing playlist of videos is not the same thing as YouTube’s protocol-level HLS media playlist.
- A reliable internet connection with upload capacity sufficient for the encoder’s chosen video and audio settings.
YouTube supports encoder, mobile, webcam, and other streaming methods. For a fixed prerecorded playlist, an encoder workflow is the relevant option; YouTube’s documentation does not certify every third-party looping application.
Create the stream in YouTube Live Control Room
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or schedule the stream.
- Set the title, description, audience designation, privacy, and an appropriate category. YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted visibility; scheduling can give viewers a page to find before the broadcast begins.
- Choose the stream settings and copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into your encoder. Keep the key private: YouTube describes stream keys as the stream’s “password and address.” If it is exposed, the channel owner or manager can reset it in the stream settings.
- Decide whether to enable DVR, which lets viewers pause or rewind during a live stream. For a calm, non-interactive nature feed, lower latency is usually not essential; YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering.
- Choose whether to enable auto-start and auto-stop. When enabled, these options let the encoder control when the stream starts and stops. Confirm the behavior in a test before relying on it unattended.
Configure the encoder for a steady feed
Match quality to the source and connection
Use a resolution and frame rate supported by your source, encoder, and available upload capacity. A higher resolution or frame rate generally requires more upload bandwidth, so prioritize a stable connection over settings the connection cannot sustain. YouTube detects incoming encoder settings and transcodes the live stream into output formats for viewers on different devices and networks; you do not need to create each viewer format yourself.
Use YouTube’s core encoder guidance
- Ingest protocol: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended protocol in its encoder guidance.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265, or AV1, subject to the applicable stream mode and format supported by your encoder.
- Audio codec: AAC or MP3, subject to the applicable stream mode and format.
These are general encoder recommendations, not a universal bitrate prescription. Choose a bitrate appropriate to the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, then verify that your connection sustains it without stream-health warnings. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists applicable bitrate and resolution recommendations by format: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Test the complete playlist
- In your encoder, select the playlist or sequence and confirm it is configured to repeat rather than stop at the end.
- Enter the Live Control Room server URL and stream key, and set the encoder’s output protocol and audio/video parameters.
- Send a test feed using footage and audio similar to the planned broadcast. Check that video plays smoothly, audio is present and appropriately balanced, and the encoder does not run out of media at the playlist boundary.
- Watch Live Control Room’s stream-health messages during the test. Fix warnings or interruptions before treating the setup as unattended.
- Start the scheduled or created stream and verify that the live page shows the expected content before leaving the encoder running.
What YouTube’s 24/7 guidance does—and does not—mean
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents a continuous-feed pattern: a channel can keep one broadcast live for a 24/7 feed and bind a separate broadcast to the same stream for a distinct live item, such as an interview. That is an API-supported broadcast arrangement; it is not a setup guide for a consumer playlist player and does not certify any particular third-party looping tool. For a non-API workflow, the encoder must loop the media and keep sending the feed.
Do not confuse that user-facing video playlist with an HLS media playlist. In HLS documentation, “playlist” refers to a protocol-level list of media segments, not a collection of nature videos selected by a creator.

Plan separately for a recording of the broadcast
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The reviewed guidance does not guarantee that an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will be archived in full, and it does not establish one universal maximum duration for continuous broadcasts. If you need a durable recording, retain the source files and make your own recording plan rather than relying on a full-day YouTube archive. Check YouTube’s current behavior before promising viewers that the entire broadcast will remain available.
Rights and monetization for nature footage
Use footage and audio you own or are licensed to broadcast, including any music, ambient recordings, or stock clips. A video being available online does not by itself give you permission to rebroadcast it.

YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams and include rules concerning repetitive or mass-produced content. A playlist made by repeatedly looping stock footage or previously published clips is not automatically eligible to earn revenue; rights, originality, and the channel’s circumstances matter. YouTube lists ads, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and channel memberships as possible live revenue options where the channel is eligible and the features are enabled. Pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled when live monetization is on, and mid-rolls can be automated or managed, but YouTube does not guarantee that ad slots will serve ads.
Software or a dedicated hardware encoder?
Software encoding can be enough to get started. A dedicated hardware encoder is an optional production choice, not a YouTube requirement for a 24/7 nature playlist. For either approach, assess whether it supports your needed codecs and protocol, can run continuously without thermal or power problems, and can recover after an encoder or network interruption. Test restart behavior instead of assuming a device or application will resume the playlist and stream correctly after a failure.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the feed | The server URL or stream key is incorrect, or the encoder is not sending. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, check the encoder’s connection status, and reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| Stream-health warnings or unstable playback | The selected output exceeds sustainable upload capacity, or the connection is fluctuating. | Check stream-health messages and connection stability; reduce the output demand by choosing a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate that the connection can sustain, then test again. |
| Video appears but audio is missing | The encoder may have the wrong audio source or unsupported audio settings. | Confirm the intended audio track is enabled and test with an AAC or MP3 setting supported by the encoder and stream mode. |
| The playlist stops at the end | Repeat or looping is not enabled, or the encoder’s playlist feature does not behave as expected. | Test through a playlist boundary and confirm the encoder returns to the first item without ending the outgoing feed. |
| The stream ends when the encoder stops | The encoder has stopped sending, or auto-stop is enabled and the encoder signals an end. | Check encoder logs and auto-stop settings. Test how the encoder behaves after a restart or interruption before leaving it unattended. |
| The full 24-hour broadcast is unavailable afterward | YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic archive guidance does not establish a full-day archive guarantee. | Keep your own source files and recording plan; verify current YouTube archive behavior rather than relying on a full-length replay. |
