For a playlist, configure the right playback source, assign and test hotkeys in OBS, then rehearse the full setup before leaving it unattended. The computer, power, network, media source, and YouTube connection still need to keep working.
Choose the right OBS source for your playlist
OBS offers two relevant options, depending on whether you want to repeat one clip or play multiple files. The OBS Project’s Media Sources guide explains the available playback settings.

Set behavior when the playlist is hidden
In a multi-scene setup, a playlist source can become hidden when you switch scenes. VLC Video has visibility behavior options that determine whether playback stops and restarts, pauses and resumes, or continues while hidden. Choose deliberately: continuing in the background may suit a playlist that should not restart when you return to its scene, while stopping or pausing may be preferable if hidden playback is unwanted. Test the behavior in your own scene arrangement rather than assuming a hidden source keeps playing.
Assign hotkeys for the actions you actually need
Open Settings → Hotkeys in OBS Studio to assign keys to supported actions. The OBS Project’s Overview Guide documents hotkeys for streaming and recording controls, sources, scenes, audio, and the replay buffer. Available media actions can depend on the OBS version and source type.

- Open Settings → Hotkeys.
- Find the action you want, such as starting or stopping the stream, switching to a particular scene, or showing or hiding a source.
- Click its hotkey field and press a distinct key or key combination.
- Repeat for other actions you need, checking that combinations do not conflict with one another or with keys you use elsewhere.
- Apply the settings, then rehearse each shortcut before using it on a public broadcast.
Useful hotkey groups
- Stream: start and stop streaming.
- Scenes and sources: switch to a named scene, or show and hide a source.
- Recording: start and stop local recording if you need a separate recording.
- Audio: use push-to-talk or push-to-mute where those actions fit your workflow.
- Replay buffer: control replay-buffer actions if you have configured that feature.
- Playlist media: inspect the Hotkeys list for your installed OBS build and VLC Video source. OBS’s source implementation registers a playlist-next hotkey for VLC Video, but labels and available media actions can vary by version and source type.
Do not assume general editing shortcuts are playlist controls. OBS’s Keyboard Shortcuts page covers editing and preview operations; those are distinct from configurable actions under Settings → Hotkeys. For example, Ctrl-F or Ctrl-R should not be treated as universal playlist playback commands.
Test the playlist and stream before leaving OBS unattended
A hotkey is an operator control, not an uptime monitor or recovery system. The OBS Project recommends testing scenes and stream operation before going live in its Overview Guide. Rehearse the complete broadcast while you can observe it:

- Confirm the intended scene is the one being sent to the stream.
- Verify the playlist starts, advances through files, and loops or shuffles as intended.
- Change scenes and confirm the playlist behaves correctly when its source is hidden.
- Check that video and audio are present and that your source files play correctly.
- Test every assigned hotkey, including stream start and stop, without relying on an untested shortcut during a live broadcast.
- Confirm the stream reaches YouTube and appears as expected before treating the setup as ready.
Leaving a stream running through OBS still depends on the host computer, its power, the network connection, your media files, OBS, and YouTube. The cited OBS materials do not establish guaranteed 24/7 uptime or YouTube archive availability. They also do not establish current YouTube rules for continuous stream length, archiving, or retention; check current YouTube Help for those platform-specific limits before planning around them.
Use remote controls only if you need them
Keyboard hotkeys are enough for basic local control. If you want to control OBS from another device or an external tool, OBS WebSocket is included by default in OBS Studio 28 and later, according to the OBS Project’s Remote Control Guide, dated 2023-04-18. That guide names clients including Macro Deck, Touch Portal, Streamer.bot, and Bitfocus Companion.

Remote control is optional, not a prerequisite for hotkeys. If you enable WebSocket access, follow OBS’s guidance to enable authentication and set a password; do not expose an unauthenticated control endpoint.
