For a single pre-recorded animation, use an OBS Media Source with Loop enabled; for a rotation of clips, use an OBS VLC Video Source playlist and install VLC. Set the encoder to YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your chosen resolution and frame rate, use CBR with a 2-second keyframe interval, then test and monitor the broadcast. A dependable 24/7 setup also needs a plan for interruptions and archives: YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours automatically.
Choose a playback source: one looping clip or a playlist
One clip: OBS Media Source
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene that will carry the broadcast.
- Select the video file and enable Loop so playback restarts when it reaches the end.
- Play the source through its ending and confirm that it restarts as expected before going live.

Several clips: OBS VLC Video Source
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS; OBS requires it for the VLC Video Source.
- Add a VLC Video Source and configure its playlist with the clips you want to rotate.
- Preview the playlist, including clip endings and the transition back to the beginning, before taking the scene live.
A playlist is useful for rotating multiple files, but the OBS documentation does not establish advanced scheduling or seamless transitions. Do not assume either without testing. The OBS Media Sources guide describes both source types.
Set resolution, frame rate and encoder settings
Choose an output mode that suits the source footage and the upload connection’s sustained capacity. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing a quality the connection can reliably sustain; its encoder guidance also recommends testing with similar audio and movement. The table gives YouTube’s current H.264 examples, not guaranteed stable settings for every computer or network.

These are YouTube recommendations and minimums for the listed H.264 output modes, not measurements of stream performance. For other codecs or resolutions, consult YouTube’s full live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions table.
Practical starting choices for lo-fi animation
- 30 fps: a sensible starting point when it matches the source and the motion does not need 60 fps. The lo-fi genre itself does not dictate a frame rate.
- 60 fps: consider it only when the source’s motion benefits and the encoder and connection can sustain the higher recommended bitrate.
- 720p or 1080p: select based on the source, desired presentation and stable upload headroom. A lower mode generally requires less bitrate than a higher one.
- Test representative motion: static artwork, moving particles and camera loops can compress differently. Compare a representative section rather than judging only a still frame.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, and recommends RTMPS. For typical stereo SDR audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 at 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz stereo, Rec. 709 color and 8-bit SDR. Check the current YouTube table for codec-specific settings before selecting a mode.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live safely
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. See Get started with live streaming.
- Get the server URL and stream key. In YouTube Live Control Room, prepare an encoder stream and copy the server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings.
- Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it in screenshots, overlays or public instructions.
- Start a test and inspect the preview. Use audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and stream health, and correct issues before relying on the stream.
- Monitor after launch. Watch audio and video quality and, if recording locally, confirm the recording file is growing and can be played back.
YouTube recommends testing and continuous monitoring; no single OBS preset guarantees long-running uptime. Its encoder guidance advises a speed test to check upload bitrate, and its live streaming tips cover preparation and monitoring.
Plan continuity and archives separately
Leaving an OBS broadcast live around the clock and preserving a complete replay are different goals. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours may be archived automatically; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours.

- If a replay matters, plan deliberate shorter sessions or a separate local recording and rotation workflow.
- Verify that local recordings are complete and playable; do not assume that a file appearing on disk is intact.
- Test an extended run and the full playlist cycle, and keep a recovery plan for an OBS, computer, media-file or internet interruption.

Clear rights for both the live stream and replay
Use animation and audio that you are authorized to broadcast. YouTube’s live terms require compliance with Community Guidelines and all necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights. Confirm that the rights cover the planned live use, relevant territories and any archived version; permission for a song or clip in one context does not automatically establish permission for a continuous live broadcast. Troubleshoot common problems
