Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStart with x264 Veryfast in OBS, then test the actual loop while watching for encoding lag. If the CPU cannot keep up, try Superfast or Ultrafast; they use less CPU but are less efficient, so the image can look worse at the same bitrate. No preset can be guaranteed to run a 24/7 stream on unspecified hardware: the right choice depends on resolution, frame rate, motion, CPU headroom and reliable upload capacity.
Start with Veryfast, then test the real loop
OBS’s x264 streaming guidance uses Veryfast as a baseline. It is a sensible first setting, not a universal best preset. Test the content you intend to loop, including its movement, animation and audio, rather than judging CPU load from a static preview. OBS emphasizes that setups and use cases differ and recommends testing.
If OBS reports encoding lag or the processor cannot sustain the workload, try Superfast, then Ultrafast if necessary. Faster presets reduce the work x264 does per frame, but use compression less efficiently: at the same bitrate, the picture may lose detail or show more artifacts. A higher bitrate can compensate to some degree, but it must stay within YouTube’s guidance for the chosen output and your connection’s stable upload capacity.
Which x264 preset uses the least CPU in OBS?
Among the common x264 presets, Ultrafast is the fastest and generally uses the least CPU; Superfast is the next faster option than Veryfast. The trade-off is declining compression efficiency as you move faster. There is no reliable CPU-use figure or threshold that applies to every computer, output, and loop.

Choose the slowest preset that runs reliably under the actual load while producing acceptable video. Compare CPU headroom and OBS encoding lag, then inspect the picture at the target bitrate. Include busy sections of the loop: a still frame may encode easily even when animated or detailed parts do not.
Set YouTube’s live output separately from the x264 preset
The preset controls x264’s encoding effort; it does not set the YouTube bitrate or keyframe interval. For H.264 live ingest, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and no more than 4 seconds between keyframes. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.

Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for your selected resolution and frame rate. Its H.264 recommendations include these examples:
| Output | YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| 480p30 | 0.4 Mbps minimum; 4 Mbps recommended |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended |
These are YouTube’s H.264 ingest recommendations, not preset values or guarantees of image quality. A low-motion loop may look acceptable at a lower bitrate than busy footage, but the amount depends on the content and cannot be specified without testing. For a low-power machine, reducing output resolution or frame rate can also reduce the workload if the result still suits the channel. Make sure your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate reliably, with room for normal variation.

Configure OBS for a live stream, not a recording
In OBS, select x264 as the streaming encoder if it is available, then set its preset and live rate control in the stream output settings. Menu names and layout can vary by OBS version. For YouTube H.264, use CBR and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; use the YouTube bitrate range for your output. Set the video resolution and frame rate to the output you intend to send, then confirm the stream key and server details in YouTube’s live control room and OBS.
Do not copy OBS’s recording CRF advice into a live stream configuration. OBS’s Advanced Recording guide lists CRF 16–23, a 2-second keyframe interval, Veryfast, High profile and Tune: None as a recording baseline. CRF is recording-oriented guidance; YouTube live ingest calls for CBR.

How to test a low-power 24/7 setup
- Choose an output first. Decide the resolution and frame rate that fit the loop and channel. Check YouTube’s current H.264 live table for that output rather than assuming a bitrate from another resolution.
- Start with x264 Veryfast. Set CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval and a bitrate within YouTube’s recommendation for the output. Prefer RTMPS where the available YouTube server option supports it.
- Run representative content. Test the loop’s most detailed and active sections with its intended audio. YouTube advises testing before going live with similar audio and movement.
- Watch OBS and YouTube together. Check OBS for encoding lag and YouTube’s stream health for ingest problems. If encoding cannot keep up, try Superfast or Ultrafast; if the image quality is not acceptable, reassess the output, bitrate and preset together.
- Check upload stability. A bitrate that works briefly may still be unsuitable if the connection fluctuates. Confirm the connection can reliably sustain the chosen stream rate before relying on it continuously.
- Repeat under the real workload. A short successful test does not certify continuous operation. No cited OBS or YouTube guidance establishes a universal low-power hardware threshold or guarantees 24/7 uptime.
Can I run an OBS stream continuously on a low-power PC?
Possibly, but the phrase “low-power PC” is not enough to predict whether x264 will keep up. CPU requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity; a compatible system does not guarantee that it can stream a particular workload. Test the intended loop and monitor encoding lag and YouTube stream health rather than relying on a hardware label or one successful start.
If CPU pressure persists, a supported hardware encoder may move encoding work to a specialized GPU component. That is an alternative to x264, not an x264 preset, and its availability depends on the hardware and encoder options in your system.

Troubleshooting common failures
- OBS shows encoding lag: x264 may be overloaded. Try a faster preset such as Superfast or Ultrafast, or reduce resolution or frame rate and test again. Recheck image quality because faster presets compress less efficiently.
- The stream looks poor at the chosen bitrate: Check that the bitrate fits YouTube’s recommendation for the selected output. A faster preset may also reduce quality at a fixed rate. Test detailed or moving portions of the loop, not only still frames.
- YouTube reports unstable or unhealthy ingest: Confirm the bitrate and keyframe interval, then check that the upload connection can sustain the stream. Use YouTube’s current live encoder guidance and monitor stream health during testing.
- Recording settings do not behave as expected for streaming: Verify that the streaming output uses CBR. Recording CRF values are not a substitute for YouTube live bitrate settings.
- The stream works briefly but fails during longer use: A short test does not establish 24/7 reliability. Repeat testing with the real loop, audio and network conditions; the available guidance does not certify a particular PC or preset for uninterrupted operation.
Or let it run in the cloud
