Fix FFmpeg concat playlist errors by checking three stages separately: whether FFmpeg can read the playlist, whether the input files can be concatenated, and whether YouTube accepts the resulting live stream. A malformed playlist needs a different fix from mismatched media streams, bad timestamps, or an ingest setting YouTube rejects.
First identify which stage is failing
Keep the failure boundaries clear: a playlist parsing error means FFmpeg may not be opening the inputs at all; a concatenation problem can produce errors or a faulty output even when the playlist parses; and YouTube ingest problems happen downstream, after FFmpeg has produced a stream. YouTube bitrate or keyframe adjustments will not repair a malformed playlist.
The FFmpeg and YouTube guidance linked below describes general constraints, not a diagnosis of your specific command. If the checks here do not isolate the cause, the useful evidence is the exact command, complete error, FFmpeg version, playlist text, and stream details from each input. Redact your YouTube stream key before sharing logs.
Fix playlist parsing and file-path errors
Use a valid concat script
The concat demuxer reads a text playlist, with one directive per line. A minimal playlist looks like this:

file 'part-02.mp4'For automatic format recognition, ffconcat version 1.0 must be the exact first line, without preceding spaces or a byte-order mark. Alternatively, explicitly select the concat format in the input command.
Check paths, quoting, and the safe option
Make sure every referenced file exists and is readable from the directory where FFmpeg runs. Quote or escape paths containing spaces or special characters. The concat demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1, which rejects paths it considers unsafe. If that rejection is the observed issue, -safe 0 permits other path forms, but use it only with a playlist and paths you trust.

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat ...-safe 0 is unnecessary when the paths meet the safe-path rules. Keep input options before the corresponding -i; FFmpeg options are position-sensitive. Check your installed build with ffmpeg -h demuxer=concat if its behavior may differ from the rolling FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Check whether the files are compatible
Compare streams before using the demuxer
The concat demuxer virtually reads files in sequence and adjusts their timestamps onto a shared timeline; it does not generally normalize unlike media. FFmpeg requires the files to have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. Compare each file’s video and audio stream count, codecs, time bases, dimensions, frame rates, and durations with ffprobe. Matching only those listed properties does not guarantee every concatenation will succeed, but differences can reveal why stream-copy concatenation is unsuitable.

Test a short playlist first, and inspect FFmpeg’s stream mapping and timestamps. The demuxer is useful when the streams are compatible and avoiding re-encoding matters. If the inputs need to be normalized and re-encoding is acceptable, FFmpeg’s concatenation FAQ identifies the concat filter as the approach for that case.
Do not expect auto-conversion to fix arbitrary mismatches
The concat demuxer’s auto_convert option is enabled by default, but its documented conversion is limited. FFmpeg currently adds the H.264 MP4-to-Annex-B bitstream filter in relevant cases, notably when resolutions change. This does not make unlike codecs or arbitrary stream layouts compatible.

Investigate gaps, freezes, and non-monotonic timestamps
Check duration information
Each file’s duration determines where the next file starts on the concatenated timeline. If stream lengths differ, gaps can result. Incorrect duration information—including a duration inferred badly or a truncated file—can create artifacts or timeline discontinuities. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer supports a playlist duration directive to override stored duration; use it only when you have a defensible duration value, not as a guess.
Inspect the output before streaming
Run a short test and inspect the generated output for freezes, gaps, or discontinuities before sending it live. If the demuxer cannot stream-copy the inputs reliably, test the concat filter and re-encode. The separate concat protocol is format-dependent and is not a general replacement for arbitrary MP4 playlists.

Check YouTube ingest after FFmpeg output is sound
Only after the playlist parses and the generated stream is coherent should you troubleshoot live ingest. YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and CBR. It recommends RTMPS, a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes.
For H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations in YouTube’s live-streaming table, not guarantees or performance measurements; consult the current table for other resolutions and frame rates. Test with representative audio and movement, then monitor YouTube’s stream health messages. These ingest settings are a separate check and cannot fix a playlist parsing or concatenation error.
Use this troubleshooting order
- Capture the failure safely. Save the exact command, complete FFmpeg error,
ffmpeg -versionoutput, and playlist text. Redact the YouTube stream key before sharing. - Verify playlist syntax. Confirm the exact first-line header if relying on auto-detection, or explicitly specify
-f concatbefore the input. - Verify every path. Confirm referenced files exist and are readable; quote or escape special paths. Use
-safe 0only if safe-path rejection is the problem and the inputs are trusted. - Compare input streams. Use
ffprobeto compare stream counts, codecs, time bases, dimensions, frame rates, and durations. The demuxer’s stream-copy approach requires matching streams. - Check timeline continuity. If you see gaps, freezes, or timestamp discontinuities, inspect durations and timestamps. Apply a playlist
durationonly when its value is reliable. - Change concatenation method if needed. If inputs require normalization, test the concat filter and re-encode rather than expecting the demuxer to reconcile them.
- Test YouTube ingest last. Once output is sound, check codec, keyframe interval, bitrate mode, audio, and network stability; test the live stream and monitor YouTube’s health messages.
