Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To loop a prerecorded 4K video on YouTube Live with OBS, create a YouTube broadcast, add the video as an OBS Media Source with Loop enabled, connect OBS using YouTube’s RTMPS service and stream key, then set the encoder to match your video and available upload bandwidth. Looping restarts the file when it ends; it does not keep a computer, internet connection, OBS, or the YouTube broadcast online by itself.
Before you start
- OBS Studio installed on a computer that can encode your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. Supported hardware and operating-system combinations vary; test your own setup rather than assuming it can sustain 4K.
- A 4K video file stored locally, or VLC installed if you want to loop a playlist of multiple files.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity.
- Rights to stream the video and its audio. A live broadcast can be interrupted or restricted if it uses copyrighted material without appropriate permission.
YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable it ahead of the session. YouTube’s encoder setup and stream-management guidance is available in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.
Configure the YouTube broadcast and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select a broadcast and configure its title, visibility, audience, and other stream settings.
- Copy the stream key and server URL shown for the broadcast. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not show it in screenshots or share it publicly.
- In Live Control Room, reset the key if it is exposed or compromised, then update OBS with the replacement key.
- Choose whether to manage auto-start and auto-stop in the broadcast’s stream settings. These settings affect how YouTube handles the broadcast; they do not make OBS or your computer stay connected.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP. You can select YouTube or YouTube RTMPS in OBS when available, or enter the server URL and key from Live Control Room.
Loop one local 4K video in OBS
- In OBS, create or select the scene you will use for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add Media Source.
- Give the source a name, select the local video file, and enable Loop in the source properties.
- Confirm the source is visible in the active scene. Check the OBS canvas to make sure the video fills or fits the frame as intended; use the canvas transform options if it is cropped or positioned incorrectly.
- Play the source and check both picture and audio. The loop begins again when the file reaches its end.
OBS Media Source supports common local formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide for source behavior and format details.

Loop a playlist instead
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC; OBS recommends installing a VLC version with the same architecture as OBS—for example, 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- In the scene’s Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video.
- Add the files in the order you want them played and enable Loop Playlist.
- Preview the playlist and check the transition from the final item back to the first, including audio levels and any differences in aspect ratio.
Playlist looping requires VLC; it is separate from the single-file Media Source’s Loop option.
Set OBS output for 4K YouTube Live
- In OBS, open Settings > Video. Set the output resolution to 3840×2160 for 4K. Choose a frame rate the source and encoder can sustain—normally 30 or 60 fps only if the source actually has that frame rate and the system can encode it reliably.
- Open Settings > Output and configure the streaming encoder. Use CBR (constant bitrate) and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Choose a bitrate using the YouTube live-ingestion recommendations below. These figures are for live encoding, not for uploading a prerecorded video file to YouTube.
- For ordinary SDR, use YouTube’s Rec. 709 guidance. Keep the OBS output resolution and frame rate consistent with the intended stream and the capabilities of the source, encoder, and connection.
- Connect OBS to the YouTube broadcast under Settings > Stream, selecting YouTube/YouTube RTMPS when available or entering the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
| Live video format | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p / 4K, 30 fps, H.264 | 42 Mbps | 11 Mbps |
| 2160p / 4K, 60 fps, H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 2160p / 4K, 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 30 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 2160p / 4K, 60 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended and minimum live-ingestion bitrates on its encoder-settings page, accessed in 2026. YouTube also specifies RTMP/RTMPS as the protocol family, H.264/H.265/AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, a recommended two-second keyframe interval, and frame rates up to 60 fps. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for current guidance.

Choose a codec and frame rate your system can hold
H.264 is a broadly used option, while AV1 or H.265 can use the lower YouTube bitrate recommendations shown above. The useful choice depends on whether your OBS encoder and YouTube ingest setup support the codec, and whether your hardware can encode it at 4K without dropped frames. OBS notes that hardware encoders offload work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component, but compatibility varies by GPU generation and operating system, and older hardware encoders may deliver lower quality at the same bitrate. OBS’s Hardware Encoding guide explains these trade-offs.
Use 30 fps for a 30 fps source unless there is a reason and capacity to output differently. Choose 60 fps only when the source contains 60 fps motion and your encoder and connection can sustain the higher workload and bitrate. A nominal 4K setting cannot restore detail or motion that is absent from the original file.

HDR is optional
HDR requires compatible source material, hardware, and color configuration; it is not necessary for a 4K stream. YouTube’s HDR guidance describes OBS support from version 30.1 and details an HEVC Main 10 workflow. See Stream HDR video on YouTube before changing color settings. For a standard SDR stream, follow Rec. 709 guidance instead.
Test the whole path before relying on a long stream
- Start a representative test in OBS using the intended 4K file, codec, frame rate, bitrate, and audio. Include motion-heavy scenes if the video has them.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. Confirm that the picture is 4K, audio is present, and the stream is not reporting instability.
- Verify the loop by letting the file reach its end and checking that playback starts again. For a playlist, test the final-to-first transition.
- Monitor OBS and YouTube during the test. YouTube recommends testing before going live and keeping about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the selected stream bitrate. This is a YouTube recommendation, not a guarantee that the connection will be stable.
- Use reliable power and a stable wired connection where practical for a long session. These reduce avoidable risks but cannot guarantee continuous operation.
YouTube’s Streaming tips cover bandwidth, testing, and stream monitoring. At 2160p, YouTube does not offer its low-latency option; 4K streams use normal latency and are transcoded into multiple viewer formats.

What “continuously” means—and what OBS cannot guarantee
OBS’s Loop setting repeats a media file, and VLC Video can repeat a playlist. Neither feature guarantees a 24/7 broadcast. A computer may sleep, lose power, overheat, lose internet, or stop running OBS; YouTube may also lose the incoming stream. The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal maximum runtime for this exact OBS workflow or promise indefinite uptime or automatic recovery after every interruption. Plan to monitor the stream and be ready to reconnect if it stops.

YouTube does not show an incoming signal
- Check that OBS is streaming to the selected YouTube service and the correct broadcast.
- Recheck the server URL and stream key. If you reset the key, replace the old value in OBS.
- Confirm the broadcast is enabled in Live Control Room and live streaming is activated for the channel.
The stream buffers or reports poor health
- Check actual upload capacity, not just the advertised download speed. YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the stream bitrate.
- If the connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate, reduce output bitrate or move to a lower frame rate, codec, or resolution that your full signal path can maintain.
- Check for competing uploads or other network traffic, and retest with the same motion and audio conditions.
OBS drops frames or the 4K output stutters
- Check OBS’s performance and stream statistics to distinguish rendering or encoding strain from network problems.
- Try a supported hardware encoder if available, or reduce frame rate, bitrate, or output resolution. Verify the source’s actual frame rate and the chosen encoder’s supported formats.
- Do not assume a GPU supports 4K encoding well just because OBS offers a hardware encoder; capability and quality vary by model and generation.
The file ends and does not restart
- Open the Media Source properties and verify Loop is enabled.
- For multiple files, use VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist; confirm VLC is installed with the same architecture as OBS.
- Make sure the source remains visible in the scene that is actually live.
The picture is cropped, silent, or the wrong color
- Check the source framing in the OBS canvas and fit or transform it to the intended composition.
- Check the source and OBS audio meters, then verify that the correct audio track is being sent.
- For SDR, use Rec. 709 guidance. If attempting HDR, confirm the complete source, hardware, encoder, version, and color configuration meet YouTube’s HDR requirements.
