OBS can play a playlist, but its documented VLC Video source does not include a built-in daily calendar scheduler. To rotate playlists automatically, keep a stable OBS scene and source, then use an OBS script or WebSocket controller triggered by your computer’s operating-system scheduler. Schedule the YouTube broadcast separately: changing the media in OBS does not schedule the broadcast itself.
Understand what you are scheduling
- Playlist changes in OBS: Which local videos OBS plays, and when. The VLC Video source supports playlist playback, but OBS’s guide does not describe a calendar-based daily schedule (OBS Media Sources).
- A YouTube live broadcast: The event that viewers can find as upcoming and that later moves to live. YouTube’s Live Streaming API treats the broadcast and the incoming stream as separate resources (Broadcasts and Streams).
- Scheduled video publication: Making an uploaded video public at a chosen time and timezone. This is not a way to change the playlist inside an OBS live stream (YouTube Help: Schedule video publish time).
For daily playlist rotation during a live stream, you need to automate OBS media selection independently of YouTube’s broadcast scheduling.
Set up a playlist source in OBS
Install the required software
Install VLC before configuring an OBS VLC Video source. OBS says the source requires VLC to appear in the source list; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC (OBS Media Sources).
Create a stable scene and source
- In OBS, create or open the scene you use for the YouTube stream.
- Add a VLC Video source and give it a stable, recognizable name, such as Daily playlist.
- Add the media files for the playlist and confirm their paths remain valid. If you move or rename a file, update the playlist or the source configuration.
- Set the source’s playback options: choose whether the list should loop and whether it should play in listed order or shuffle. OBS documents these as VLC Video source options; they do not provide a daily date-based change by themselves (OBS Media Sources).
- Check that the scene renders and the files play before adding automation.
OBS separates sources from scenes: sources are the media and other elements shown in a scene (OBS Sources Guide). Keeping the scene and source names stable makes it easier for a script or external controller to target the right item.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Automate the daily switch
OBS supports scripts written in Python or Lua, and external applications can control OBS through WebSocket. Those are documented extension points, not a prebuilt daily playlist scheduler (OBS Developer Guide).
- Prepare one playlist per day or schedule entry. Keep a clear mapping, such as a date or weekday to a media list. Decide whether each list loops and whether order matters.
- Choose the control method. Use an OBS Lua/Python script or an external controller connected through OBS WebSocket. The automation needs to select or replace the intended media list in the existing source. The exact implementation depends on your OBS version and operating system; the official guide confirms the interfaces but does not provide a ready-made daily timer workflow.
- Schedule the trigger in the computer’s operating-system scheduler. Set the intended local time and check the computer’s timezone and daylight-saving behavior. For an India-based schedule, make sure the host machine is using the local time you intend; YouTube’s scheduled-video timezone selection does not configure an OBS automation schedule.
- Test the transition before relying on it. Confirm the expected files load, the playlist order and loop behavior are right, and the live output continues through the change. Test missed triggers, OBS restarts, computer restarts, sleep, and unavailable or renamed media files.
- Recheck after changes. OBS upgrades, script changes, operating-system updates, and plugin changes can affect automation. If you use a plugin, verify its compatibility with your OBS version, operating system, and architecture; OBS notes that plugins can vary by platform and version (OBS Plugins Guide).
This is an implementation approach based on OBS’s documented scripts and WebSocket support; it is not a tested, turnkey recipe. Build and validate the controller for your own setup before depending on it for an unattended channel.

Schedule the YouTube broadcast separately
Playlist automation controls what OBS sends; it does not create or schedule a YouTube event. Create or select the live event in YouTube Live Control Room, or use YouTube’s Live Streaming API. In the API model, a liveBroadcast represents the event and a liveStream represents the incoming encoder feed. The broadcast can be bound to a stream, configured for auto-start, or transitioned to live through the API (Broadcasts and Streams; Life of a Broadcast; LiveBroadcasts: transition).
Before relying on an unattended public start, test the event and encoder workflow using a private or unlisted setup. Confirm the broadcast’s auto-start or manual transition behavior and make sure OBS is sending the correct feed. YouTube’s live-stream settings are managed separately from OBS playlist selection (Manage live stream settings).

Keep profiles and schedules distinct
OBS profiles save most output-related settings, while scene collections store scenes. A profile is useful for organizing stream output settings, but it is not a playlist schedule and does not store scenes (OBS Profiles). Keep playlist timing in the automation layer rather than assuming a profile change will rotate media.
Common failures and checks
- VLC Video is missing from the source list: Confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC according to OBS’s guide.
- The playlist changes manually but not on schedule: Check that the operating-system scheduler ran at the intended local time, that its timezone is correct, and that the script or controller targets the correct OBS instance and source.
- A scheduled playlist is empty or stops unexpectedly: Check file paths, permissions, and whether the files are available to the account running OBS. Validate loop and shuffle settings on the VLC source.
- The playlist changes, but the YouTube event is not live: Treat broadcast state separately. Confirm that OBS is sending to the intended stream and that the YouTube event has been started or configured for auto-start.
- Automation stops after an update or restart: Recheck the script, WebSocket connection, scheduler trigger, and any plugin’s compatibility with the installed OBS version and platform.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded videos playing without leaving OBS or a home computer running, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed, and is for YouTube only.
